Comparative experimental analysis on the compressive behaviour of masonry columns strengthened by FRP, BFRCM or steel wires

2017

Abstract In the last decade, several studies have investigated the application of Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) wraps to masonry piers in order to provide a confinement effect and enhance compressive strength and ductility. Although this technique has proved to be quite effective, various drawbacks arise when organic resins are used to bind fibres. To solve these problems, different techniques have been developed to be used as alternative methods for enhancing the structural performances of weak masonry columns. Among these, the use of Basalt Fibre Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (BFRCM) wrapping, or the application of steel wires at mortar joints. This paper presents the results of an expe…

Stress transfer and failure mechanisms in steel-concrete trussed beams: Experimental investigation on slab-thick and full-thick beams

2018

Abstract This study presents the results of an experimental investigation on semi-precast Hybrid Steel Trussed-Concrete Beams (HSTCBs) for analyzing the failure modes and the stress transfer mechanism between concrete and embedded steel elements (plate and truss). The available literature presents previous studies carried out by the authors mainly focused on the understanding of the local transfer mechanism by means of push-out tests. Conversely, in this paper original the results of laboratory tests conducted on six specimens of full-size HSTCBs subjected to four-point bending, with variation in the shear span, are reported on. From these results, the authors are able to assess the failure…

The rate of polymerization in two loci reaction systems: VDF-HFP precipitation copolymerization in supercritical carbon dioxide

2011

When the copolymerization of vinylidene fluoride (VDF) and hexafluoropropylene (HFP) is carried out in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO 2) under heterogeneous conditions, the reaction occurs both in the continuous CO 2-rich phase and in the dispersed polymer-rich phase. The two phases being characterized by different values of reactant concentrations and kinetic parameters, one would expect that the reaction kinetics is affected by the polymer phase holdup in the reactor. However, the reaction rate is almost insensitive to the amount of produced polymer, at least at specific reaction conditions. This apparent contradiction is discussed and clarified in this paper by a series of comparativ…

Alumina supported Pt(1%)/Ce0.6Zr0.4O2 monolith: Remarkable stabilization of ceria–zirconia solution towards CeAlO3 formation operated by Pt under red…

2009

Abstract A structured Pt(1 wt%)/ceria–zirconia/alumina catalyst and the metal-free ceria–zirconia/alumina were prepared, by dip-coating, over a cordierite monolithic support. XRD analyses and Rietveld refinements of the structural data demonstrate that in the Pt supported catalysts ceria–zirconia is present as a Ce 0.6 Zr 0.4 O 2 homogeneous solid solution and that the deposition over the cordierite doesn’t produce any structural modification. Moreover no Pt sintering occurs. By comparing the XRD patterns recorded on Pt/ceria–zirconia/alumina and ceria–zirconia/alumina after three redox cycles, it results that Pt, favouring the structural reorganization of the ceria–zirconia into one cubic …

Debonding Phenomena in CFRP Strengthened Calcarenite Masonry Walls and Vaults

2009

In this paper the results of an experimental investigation on full-scale reinforced masonry elements like vaults and walls are presented. The masonry type is constituted by calcarenite ashlars and bed joint mortar and the reinforcement is constituted by Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) strips. Preliminary experimental results obtained in a previous research by the authors on the local behaviour at the interface CFRP-calcarenite are summarized. Tests with controlled displacement are carried out on out-of-plane loaded walls and cylindrical vaults loaded at a quarter of the span. Results of tests carried out before and after the application of the reinforcement made it possible to evalu…

Flexural behaviour of concrete corbels containing steel fibers or wrapped with FRP sheets

2005

In the present paper an analytical and experimental investigation referring to the flexural behaviour of reinforced concrete corbels subjected to vertical forces is presented. For fixed shape and dimensions of the corbels the experimental investigation analyses the effects of the following: longitudinal and transverse steel reinforcements; fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) with hooked steel fibers; external wrapping retrofitting technique with a thin layer of carbon fiber sheet (CFRP). The analytical model based on equivalent truss structures, allows one to determine the bearing capacity of corbels, distinguishing the different ultimate states reached. The analytical results are then compared…

Timing, Complications, and Safety of Tracheotomy in Critically Ill Patients With COVID-19

2021

Importance: The current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to unprecedented needs for invasive ventilation, with 10% to 15% of intubated patients subsequently requiring tracheotomy. Objective: To assess the complications, safety, and timing of tracheotomy performed for critically ill patients with COVID-19. Design, Setting, and Participants: This prospective cohort study assessed consecutive patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) who had COVID-19 that required tracheotomy. Patients were recruited from March 16 to April 10, 2020, at a tertiary referral center. Exposures: A surgical tracheotomy was performed for all patients following recommended criteria for use…

COVID-19 Vaccine and Death: Causality Algorithm According to the WHO Eligibility Diagnosis

2021

The current challenge worldwide is the administration of anti-severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccines. Even if rarely, severe vascular adverse reactions temporally related to vaccine administration have induced diffidence in the population at large. In particular, researchers worldwide are focusing on the so-called “thrombosis and thrombocytopenia after COVID-19 vaccination”. This study aims to establish a practical workflow to define the relationship between adverse events following immunization (AEFI) and COVID-19 vaccination, following the basic framework of the World Health Organization (WHO). Post-mortem investigation plays a pivotal role to support this c…

Interpretation of Diagnostic Imaging for Medicolegal Issues

2019

Forensic radiology is a relative recently emergent part of forensic medicine characterized by the application of radiological methods in criminal investigations, such as the forensic M.E’s radiological reports in civil or penal matters for judicial technical advice. The various imaging modalities like X-rays, Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and ultrasonography can be used depending on various forms of cases and their requirements in routine investigations.
