Design and evaluation of a HDR skin applicator with flattening filter

2008

The purposes of this study are: (i) to design field flattening filters for the Leipzig applicators of 2 and 3 cm of inner diameter with the source traveling parallel to the applicator contact surface, which are accessories of the microSelectron-HDR afterloader (Nucletron, Veenendaal, The Netherlands). These filters, made of tungsten, aim to flatten the heterogeneous dose distribution obtained with the Leipzig applicators. (ii) To estimate the dose rate distributions for these Leipzig+filter applicators by means of the Monte Carlo (MC) method. (iii) To experimentally verify these distributions for prototypes of these new applicators, and (iv) to obtain the correspondence factors to measure t…

Recently published line strengths for the transition array 3s–3p in C I, N II and O III: a critical review

2014

Recently calculated atomic structure data for C I, N II and O III are reviewed and analyzed by performing J-file sum rule tests. The line strengths of the 3s–3p transition array are analyzed. In the case of neutral carbon and ionized nitrogen data, the LS-forbidden transitions are included in the analysis.

A high-temperature laser ion source for trace analysis and other applications

1990

We report here on the development of a high-temperature laser ion source useful for trace analysis and other applications. It consists of a high temperature ionization chamber, three tunable dye lasers pumped by copper vapor lasers for stepwise resonant ionization and a Mattauch-Herzog mass spectrometer for the analysis of photo-ions. The principle of the laser ion source and its theoretical efficiency are discussed, where the efficiency of a laser ion source is the ratio of photo-ions extracted out to the number of atoms introduced into the cavity. Experimentally, an efficiency of 2×10−3 has been achieved for technetium. The scheme of gated detection is described which is used for suppress…

Frequency tripling for resonance ionization spectroscopy (RIS) of Cd

1998

To explore the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements in the rapid neutron-capture process, investigations on short- lived, very neutron-rich Cd isotopes are planned that require pure samples. These will be produced at the CERN-ISOLDE on-line mass separator in combination with a chemically se- lective laser ion source. The excitation scheme for resonance ionization of Cd was tested in Mainz with a copper-vapor- pumped dye laser system. Due to the high ionization potential of Cd, frequency tripling was required for the first excita- tion step.1D 228: 8n m/. Laser light with an average power of 2m Wwas obtained after frequency tripling and was suc- cessfully used for RIS test measurements on cadmi…

Production of hydrogen negative ions in an ECR volume source: balance between vibrational excitation and ionization

2018

International audience; The operation of an ECR-driven (2.45 GHz) hydrogen negative ion source is studied. Electron densities and temperatures are investigated with electrostatic probes and negative ion densities are measured with laser photodetachment. Vacuum ultraviolet irradiance measurements are focused on molecular transitions to the ground state while high-resolution visible emission spectroscopy is used to study the transitions between excited states for both molecules and atoms. The standalone operation of the source is found to be more efficient in higher pressures (12 mTorr) where negative ion densities are as high as 4×109 cm−3. Further investigation on the operation of the sou…

First-principles calculations of the atomic and electronic structure ofFcenters in the bulk and on the (001) surface ofSrTiO3

2006

The atomic and electronic structure, formation energy, and the energy barriers for migration have been calculated for the neutral O vacancy point defect F center in cubic SrTiO3 employing various implementations of density functional theory DFT. Both bulk and TiO2-terminated 001 surface F centers have been considered. Supercells of different shapes containing up to 320 atoms have been employed. The limit of an isolated single oxygen vacancy in the bulk corresponds to a 270-atom supercell, in contrast to commonly used supercells containing 40– 80 atoms. Calculations carried out with the hybrid B3PW functional show that the F center level approaches the conduction band bottom to within 0.5 eV…

VUV diagnostic of electron impact processes in low temperature molecular hydrogen plasma

2015

Novel methods for diagnostics of molecular hydrogen plasma processes, such as ionization, production of high vibrational levels, dissociation of molecules via excitation to singlet and triplet states and production of metastable states, are presented for molecular hydrogen plasmas in corona equilibrium. The methods are based on comparison of rate coefficients of plasma processes and optical emission spectroscopy of lowest singlet and triplet transitions, i.e. Lyman-band ($B^1\Sigma^+_u \rightarrow X^1\Sigma^+_g$) and molecular continuum ($a^3\Sigma^+_g \rightarrow b^3\Sigma^+_u$), of the hydrogen molecule in VUV wavelength range. Comparison of rate coefficients of spin-allowed and/or spin-f…

Ferroelectric plasma source as an exciting source for rare earth elements

2003

The plasma sources basing on electrical discharges near the surfaces of ferroelectric materials have been described. It was shown that the ferroelectric plasma sources are especially useful for investigations in the field of optical spectroscopy. They have been found to be especially useful for exciting the atoms and ions or rare earth elements.

SOIL IONIZATION DUE TO HIGH PULSE TRANSIENT CURRENTS LEAKED BY EARTH ELECTRODES

2009

This paper proposes a numerical model of the soil ionization phenomena that can occur when earth electrodes are injected by high pulse transient currents, as the one associated with a direct lightning stroke. Based on finite difference time domain numerical scheme, this model ascribes the electrical breakdown in the soil to the process of discharge in the air. In fact, as soon as the local electric field overcomes the electrical strength, the air in the voids trapped among soil particles is ionized, and the current is conducted by ionized plasma paths locally grown. The dimension of these ionized air channels is strictly dependent upon the local temperature. Thus, a local heat balance is en…
