First observation of a resonance ionization signal on242mAm fission isomers

1992

The feasibility of a hyperfine spectroscopy on242mAm fission isomers has been demonstrated at the low target production rate of 10/s. The experimental method employed is based on resonance ionization spectroscopy in a buffer gas cell with detection of the ionization process by means of the fission decay of the isomers. The resonance ionization has been performed in two steps, utilizing an excimer dye laser combination with a repetition rate of 300 Hz. The first resonant step proceeds through theJ=7/2 term at 21440.35 cm−1, which has been excited with the tuncable dye laser beam of a wavelength of 466.28 nm, the second non-resonant step is achieved with the 351 nm radiation of the excimer la…

Radiation detected resonance ionization spectroscopy on208Tl and242fAm

1993

An ultra-sensitive laser spectroscopic method has been developed for the hyperfine spectroscopy of short-lived isotopes far off stability produced by heavy ion induced nuclear reactions at very weak intensity (> 1/s). It is based on resonance ionization spectroscopy in a buffer gas cell with radiation detection of the ionization process (RADRIS). As a first on-line application of RADRIS optical spectroscopy at242fAm fission isomers is in progress at the low target production rate of 10/s. The resonance ionization has been performed in two steps utilizing an excimer dye laser combination with a repetition rate of 300 Hz. The first resonant step proceeds through terms which correspond to wave…

Laser systems for on-line laser ion sources

2008

Since its initiation in the middle of the 1980s, the resonant ionization laser ion source has been established as a reliable and efficient on-line ion source for radioactive ion beams. In comparison to other on-line ion sources it comprises the advantages of high versatility for the elements to be ionized and of high selectivity and purity for the ion beam generated by resonant laser radiation. Dye laser systems have been the predominant and pioneering working horses for laser ion source applications up to recently, but the development of all-solid-state titanium:sapphire laser systems has nowadays initiated a significant evolution within this field. In this paper an overview of the ongoing…

Isomer separation of Cu and Cu with a resonance ionization laser ion source

2000

Abstract Radioactive copper isotopes were ionized with the resonance ionization laser ion source (RILIS) at the on-line isotope separator ISOLDE (CERN). Using the different hyperfine structure in the 3d10 4s  2 S1/2 – 3d10 4p  2 P01/2 transition the low- and high-spin isomers of 70 Cu were selectively enhanced by tuning the laser wavelength. The light was provided by a narrow-bandwidth dye laser pumped by copper vapor lasers (CVL) and frequency doubled in a BBO crystal. The ground state to isomeric state intensity ratio could be varied by a factor of 30, allowing to assign gamma transitions unambiguously to the decay of the individual isomers. It is shown that the method can also be used to…

Laser preparation of bunched ion beams

1997

Abstract Laser ionization at ISOLDE is performed with high repetition laser beams in the ion source unit and for daughter elements with low repetition lasers synchronized with laser desorption from a secondary target. We are preparing an implementation of thermal adsorption followed by laser desorption and laser ionization in the target ion source unit of ISOLDE. The combination of resonance ionization with thermal bunching allows the preparation of bunched and chemically pure ion beams. Bunched ion beams of Mg or Ca are prepared for post-acceleration at REX-ISOLDE. In order to investigate the process of adsorption and pulsed laser desorption, experiments are performed with Ba vapour. In a …

Rate capability of a cryogenic stopping cell for uranium projectile fragments produced at 1000 MeV/u

2016

At the Low-Energy Branch (LEB) of the Super-FRS at FAIR, projectile and fission fragments will be produced at relativistic energies, separated in-flight, energy-bunched, slowed down and thermalized in a cryogenic stopping cell (CSC) filled with ultra-pure He gas. The fragments are extracted from the stopping cell using a combination of DC and RF electric fields and gas flow. A prototype CSC for the LEB has been developed and successfully commissioned at the FRS Ion Catcher at GSI. Ionization of He buffer gas atoms during the stopping of energetic ions creates a region of high space charge in the stopping cell. The space charge decreases the extraction efficiency of stopping cells since the …

Cryogenic helium as stopping medium for high-energy ions

2008

We have investigated the survival and transport efficiency of Ra-219 ions emitted by a Ra-223 source in high-density cryogenic helium gas, with ionisation of the gas induced by a proton beam. The combined efficiency of ion survival and transport by an applied electric field was measured as a function of ionisation rate density for electric fields up to 160 V/cm and for three temperature and density combinations: 77 K, 0.18 mg/cm(3), 10 K, 0.18 mg/cm(3) and 10 K, 0.54 mg/cm(3). At low beam intensity or high electric field, an efficiency of 30%, is obtained, confirming earlier results. A sharp drop in efficiency is observed at a "threshold" ionisation rate density which increases with the squ…

MELISSA: Laser ion source setup at CERN-MEDICIS facility. Blueprint

2019

The Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS) has become an essential feature of many radioactive ion beam facilities worldwide since it offers an unmatched combination of efficiency and selectivity in the production of ion beams of many different chemical elements. In 2019, the laser ion source setup MELISSA is going to be established at the CERN-MEDICIS facility, based on the experience of the workgroup LARISSA of the University Mainz and CERN ISOLDE RILIS team. The purpose is to enhance the capability of the radioactive ion beam supply for end users by optimizing the yield and the purity of the final product. In this article, the blueprint of the laser ion source, as well as the key …

Off-line studies of the laser ionization of yttrium at the IGISOL facility

2007

A laser ion source is under development at the IGISOL facility, Jyvaskyla, in order to address deficiencies in the ion guide technique. The key elements of interest are those of a refractory nature, whose isotopes and isomers are widely studied using both laser spectroscopic and high precision mass measurement techniques. Yttrium has been the first element of choice for the new laser ion source. In this work we present a new coupled dye-Ti:Sapphire laser scheme and give a detailed discussion of the results obtained from laser ionization of yttrium atoms produced in an ion guide via joule heating of a filament. The importance of not only gas purity, but indeed the baseline vacuum pressure in…

Very high specific activity erbium 169Er production for potential receptor-targeted radiotherapy

2019

Erbium 169Er is one of the most interesting radiolanthanides for new potential receptor-targeted β− therapy applications due to its low energy β− emissions, very low intensity ɣ rays and the possibility to use 68Ga or 44Sc as companion for diagnostic in a theranostics approach. Currently it can be produced in reactors through the neutron activation of highly enriched 168Er. The low specific activity of the produced carrier-added 169Er is limiting its use for receptor-targeted therapy. Nonetheless it is used for radiosynoviorthesis of small joints. The aim of this work is to develop a new large-scale production method for the supply of very high specific activity 169Er. Highly enriched 168Er…
