RILIS-ionized mercury and tellurium beams at ISOLDE CERN

2017

This paper presents the results of ionization scheme development for application at the ISOLDE Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS). Two new ionization schemes for mercury are presented: a three-step three-resonance ionization scheme, ionizing via an excitation to a Rydberg level and a three-step two-resonance ionization scheme, with a non-resonant final step to the ionization continuum that corresponded to a factor of four higher ionization efficiency. The efficiency of the optimal mercury ionization scheme was measured, together with the efficiency of a new three-step three resonance ionization scheme for tellurium. The efficiencies of the mercury and tellurium ionization schemes…

Resonance ionization schemes for high resolution and high efficiency studies of exotic nuclei at the CRIS experiment

2019

© 2019 This paper presents an overview of recent resonance ionization schemes used at the Collinear Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy (CRIS) setup located at ISOLDE, CERN. The developments needed to reach high spectral resolution and efficiency will be discussed. Besides laser ionization efficiency and high resolving power, experiments on rare isotopes also require low-background conditions. Ongoing developments that aim to deal with beam-related sources of background are presented. ispartof: Nuclear Instruments & Methods In Physics Research Section B-Beam Interactions With Materials And Atoms vol:463 pages:398-402 ispartof: location:SWITZERLAND, CERN, Geneva status: published

Certification of a 41Ca dose material for use in human studies (IRMM-3703) and a corresponding set of isotope reference materials for 41Ca measuremen…

2005

Abstract The long-living radioisotope 41Ca could overcome current limitations in assessing the impact of interventions on bone health in controlled human studies. Changes in bone Ca metabolism can be identified directly via the induced changes in 41Ca excretion from 41Ca-labelled bones via the n(41Ca)/n(40Ca) ratio in urine. A 41Ca dose material (IRMM-3703), for use in human studies, was produced by IRMM within the EC funded project OSTEODIET. The 41Ca base material was purified and the purified solution is certified for both isotopic composition and amount content by isotope dilution mass spectrometry. The 44Ca-enriched isotope reference material, IM-6009, was used as spike and the natural…

Production of molecular sideband radioisotope beams at CERN-ISOLDE using a Helicon-type plasma ion source

2013

In order to account for the increasing demand for strong molecular beams for nuclear physics experiments at ISOLDE, a new radioactive ion source concept based on an RE discharge in a magnetized plasma was developed at CERN. Experimental studies at the ISOLDE offline separator show that the optimum conditions for CO+ and CO2+ ion production are given when the ion source is operated with He plasma, in line with expectations based on their electron impact ionization cross-sections. At optimum tuning, ionization efficiencies of 2.5% and 4% were measured for CO+ and Ar+, respectively. The capability of the Helicon ion source prototype for ISOL operation was evaluated during two online runs at th…

New concepts for the ion guide technique

2008

The technique of using noble gases to cool energetic beams offers fast extraction times, very little sensitivity to chemical properties of the ions and very low-energy spreads. A variant of this method is based on the selective laser ionization of radioactive species after they have been thermalized in gas as neutral atoms. The laser ion source in Jyvaskyla is used to highlight the importance of buffer gas purity using yttrium, a particularly chemically reactive element. The time distribution profiles obtained on-line illustrate the competing factors that create and destroy the ion of interest during evacuation from the ion guide. A review of the extraction efficiencies of gas catchers of d…

Laser ion source tests at the HRIBF on stable Sn, Ge and Ni isotopes

2006

Abstract As one step in the ion source development for the Rare Isotope Accelerator, a hot-cavity laser ion source using an all-solid-state titanium–sapphire laser system has been tested at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility. Resonance ionization of stable isotopes of Sn, Ge and Ni has been studied in a Ta hot cavity. Efficient three step resonant ionization schemes applying frequency tripling for the first excitation step and using auto-ionizing or atomic Rydberg states in the ionizing step have been identified for all three elements, resulting in laser ion beams of typically around 100 nA. By saturating most of the optical excitation steps involved, ionization efficiencies of 22%…

Resonance ionization of holmium for ion implantation in microcalorimeters

2016

Abstract The determination of the electron neutrino mass by calorimetric measurement of the 163 Ho electron capture spectrum requires ultra-pure samples. Several collaborations, like ECHo or HOLMES, intend to employ microcalorimeters into which 163 Ho is implanted as an ion beam. This makes a selective and additionally very efficient ion source for holmium mandatory. For this purpose, laser resonance ionization of stable holmium 165 Ho was studied, using a three step excitation scheme driven by pulsed Ti:sapphire lasers. Five measurements with sample sizes of 10 14 and 10 15 atoms were performed for the efficiency investigation. In average, an excellent ionization efficiency of 32(5) % coul…

New developments of the in-source spectroscopy method at RILIS/ISOLDE

2013

At the CERN ISOLDE facility, long isotope chains of many elements are produced by proton-induced reactions in target materials such as uranium carbide. The Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS) is an efficient and selective means of ionizing the reaction products to produce an ion beam of a chosen isotope. Coupling the RILIS with modern ion detection techniques enables highly sensitive studies of nuclear properties (spins, electromagnetic moments and charge radii) along an isotope chain, provided that the isotope shifts and hyperfine structure splitting of the atomic transitions can be resolved. At ISOLDE the campaign to measure the systematics of isotopes in the lead region (Pb, Bi…

Inner shell ionization of argon in ECRIS plasma

2018

Abstract The volumetric K α emission rate of argon emitted from the electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) heated plasmas of the JYFL (University of Jyvaskyla, Department of Physics) 14 GHz ECR ion source (ECRIS) and the 14.5 GHz Grenoble Test Source (GTS) at iThemba Laboratory for Accelerator Based Sciences have been measured to gain an understanding of the influence of the ion source tune parameters on the absolute inner shell ionization rate. It was observed that the behaviour of the ionization rate and the extracted ion beam currents react differently, depending the parametric sweep performed. The neutral gas pressure and incident microwave power was found to have the strongest influence on…

Advances in surface ion suppression from RILIS: Towards the Time-of-Flight Laser Ion Source (ToF-LIS)

2016

Abstract We present results from the development towards the Time-of-Flight Laser Ion Source (ToF-LIS) aiming for the suppression of isobaric contaminants through fast beam gating. The capability to characterize high resistance ion sources has been successfully demonstrated. A ninefold selectivity gain has been achieved through suppression of surface ionized potassium, while maintaining >90% transmission for laser-ionized gallium using a thin wall graphite ionizer cavity combined with a fast beam gate. Initial results from the investigation of glassy carbon as a potential hot cavity ion source are presented. Power-cycle tests of a newly designed mount for fragile ion source cavities indicat…
