Photoelectric effect from a metal surface: a revisited theoretical model

1992

The Sommerfeld model extended to include radiation–electron interaction in the regime of highly intense fields is taken as the basis for studying theoretically the laser multiphoton photoelectric effect from a metal surface. Numerical analysis is carried out without approximations other than those inherent in the model itself; the study of the multiphoton aspect of the problem is based on a scheme that is nonperturbative in an essential way. The numerical analysis facilitates insight into the potential and the limits of the model in the interpretation of recent experiments and into the similarities and differences between the metal multiphoton effect and atomic multiphoton ionization. The r…

Observation of two-XUV-photon ionization using harmonic generation from a short, intense laser pulse

1996

We report the observation of a two-photon ionization process in the XUV wavelength regime. In a near-resonant 1 + 1 ionization scheme, Ar atoms are ionized absorbing the 15 eV third harmonic photons produced in a gas jet by the 0.5 ps intense laser pulses of a KrF excimer laser emitting at 248.6 nm. The present demonstration of a non-linear process in the XUV regime reveals feasibility of high-intensity applications utilizing the uniquely high peak power of non-conventional short wavelength radiation sources based on harmonic generation.

Photodetachment ofH−in the presence of a low-frequency laser field

1993

The photodetachment of a model one-electron ion simulating ${\mathrm{H}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ in the presence of a low-frequency field is analyzed. Two different geometries are considered in order to get information on the effect of the ponderomotive energy shift \ensuremath{\Delta} on the photodetachment cross section. Our calculations suggest that a correspondence may be established between the ponderomotive shift and the photodetachment cross section, when the ejected electron may exchange only a few low-frequency photons. This is in qualitative agreement with recent experimental observations. When a large number of processes are open in which the detached electron may exchange low…

Observation of field phase dependent autoionization

1999

We report on the observation of a field phase dependent autoionization rate of calcium in the region of the doubly excited state. Excitation of the autoionizing state occurs from the atomic ground state through two phase related and hence interfering channels, namely a three photon channel and a single photon channel , being the third harmonic of . The autoionization rate exhibits a sinusoidal modulation as a function of the relative phase of the two excitation fields. Both ionizing fields are not focused in the interaction region, thus demonstrating the possibility of phase control in a large interaction volume and free of phase shift effects associated with focused geometries.

Harmonic Generation and Nonlinear Propagation: When Secondary Radiations Have Primary Consequences

2014

In this Letter, it is experimentally and theoretically shown that weak odd harmonics generated during the propagation of an infrared ultrashort ultraintense pulse unexpectedly modify the nonlinear properties of the medium and lead to a strong modification of the propagation dynamics. This result is in contrast with all current state-of-the-art propagation model predictions, in which secondary radiations, such as third harmonic, are expected to have a negligible action upon the fundamental pulse propagation. By analyzing full three-dimensional ab initio quantum calculations describing the microscopic atomic optical response, we have identified a fundamental mechanism resulting from interfere…

Nonperturbative treatments of nonresonant multiphoton ionization of the hydrogen atom: weak-field limit

1989

A nonperturbative treatment of the multiphoton ionization of the hydrogen atom based on the S matrix and devised for nonresonant strong-field situations is analyzed in the weak-field limit. Comparisons are presented with other S matrices as well as other nonperturbative approaches. Our treatment is found to perform generally better than similar S-matrix treatments. The usual perturbative results are recovered provided that the photon wavelengths are sufficiently short and are off resonance with the atomic transitions. Important indications are obtained as to the role of the atomic structure, the relevance of the gauge consistency, and the reliability and improvement of the present nonpertur…

2014

N-type CdO is a transparent conducting oxide (TCO) which has promise in a number of areas including solar cell applications. In order to realize this potential a detailed knowledge of the electronic structure of the material is essential. In particular, standard density functional theory (DFT) methods struggle to accurately predict fundamental material properties such as the band gap. This is largely due to the underestimation of the Cd 4d binding energy, which results in a strong hybridization with the valence-band (VB) states. In order to test theoretical approaches, comparisons to experiment need to be made. Here, synchrotron-radiation photoelectron spectroscopy (SR-PES) measurements are…

Radiative recombination in the presence of a few cycle laser pulse.

2009

We have investigated the laser-assisted radiative recombination in the presence of a few-cycle pulse with the aim of demonstrating means of controlling such process. Within the Coulomb-Volkov approach already employed to describe the radiative recombination assisted by a monochromatic laser field, we have found that the emitted photon spectrum is affected by both the cycle number nc and the carrier-envelope relative phase phi . In particular, it has been shown that the minimum and the maximum values of the emitted photon energy may be controlled by varying nc and phi . Finally, it has been found that the enhancement of radiative recombination occurring in the presence of a monochromatic fie…

Monte Carlo calculation of beam quality correction factors for PTW cylindrical ionization chambers in photon beams.

2020

The beam quality correction factor k Q for megavoltage photon beams has been calculated for eight PTW (Freiburg, Germany) ionization chambers (Farmer chambers PTW30010, PTW30011, PTW30012, and PTW30013, Semiflex 3D chambers PTW31021, PTW31010, and PTW31013, and the PinPoint 3D chamber PTW31016). Simulations performed on the widely used NE-2571 ionization chamber have been used to benchmark the results. The Monte Carlo code PENELOPE/penEasy was used to calculate the absorbed dose to a point in water and the absorbed dose to the active air volume of the chambers for photon beams in the range 4 to 24 MV. Of the nine ionization chambers analysed, only five are included in the current version of…

Geometry Diagnostics of a Stellar Flare from Fluorescent X-Rays

2008

We present evidence of Fe fluorescent emission in the Chandra HETGS spectrum of the single G-type giant HR 9024 during a large flare. In analogy to solar X-ray observations, we interpret the observed Fe K$\alpha$ line as being produced by illumination of the photosphere by ionizing coronal X-rays, in which case, for a given Fe photospheric abundance, its intensity depends on the height of the X-ray source. The HETGS observations, together with 3D Monte Carlo calculations to model the fluorescence emission, are used to obtain a direct geometric constraint on the scale height of the flaring coronal plasma. We compute the Fe fluorescent emission induced by the emission of a single flaring coro…
