Social media users in search of ‘facts’: the Trade Union House fire case
2021
What factors influence users to believe the stories they find in social media, and what role do emotions play for users in concluding that a particular fact is ‘true’? This article examines one aspect of emotionalized communication in social networks in an information war context, namely, how social network users make decisions about the reliability of the information they receive. We employ a qualitative study of a single case – a discussion among Russian-speaking Livejournal.com and Facebook.com users of a tragic incident in Ukraine – the deadly fire that took place in the Odessa Trade Union House on 2 May, 2014. The relevancy of this case consists in how, for all its uniqueness as a trag…

Tieto, valta ja vastuu erityislasten hoidossa
2016
Tutkimukseni rakentaa kuvan epäsymmetriselle vallalle perustuvasta vuorovaikutuksesta, jossa ammattilaisen ja asiakkaan roolia määrittelevät kulttuuriset kategoriat vaikuttavat vanhempien mahdollisuuksiin osallistua auttamistyön neuvotteluihin. Näiden kategorioiden mukaan asiakkaan roolina on olla tiedon ja avun vastaanottaja, minkä seurauksena heidän …

Information, Communications and Media Technologies for Sustainability: Constructing Data-Driven Policy Narratives
2021
This paper introduces the idea of data-driven narratives to examine how the use of information, communications, and media technologies (ICMTs) impacts the sustainable growth of economies. While ICMTs have regularly been advocated as a policy tool for growth and development, there is a research gap in empirical studies validating how such policies may be effective. This analysis is based on historical panel data from 39 economies across the developed North (19) and developing South (20). The industry-standard Cross-Industry Standard Process for Data Mining (CRISP-DM) methodology was applied to construct narratives that weave extant theories with empirical data. The art of developing data-dri…
Sense experience and differentiation : Husserl on bodily awareness
2023
This article outlines the basic ingredients of Husserl’s theory of bodily awareness. It first analyses the concepts of hyletic and kinesthetic sensibility, and illustrates the interwovenness and equiprimordiality of Me and not-Me in Husserl’s account. Second, it shows how the concept of the lived body emerges from this complex sensible foundation. Thirdly, it argues that, as the area of intersection between the Me and the not-Me, bodily awareness is the initial locus of differentiation between Me and not-Me: an area where the experiential distinction between the Me and the not-Me is constantly negotiated. peerReviewed
ISEBA – A Framework for IS Evolution Benefit Assessment
2005
Decisions regarding information system evolution strategy, including modernization or replacement, are economically significant. Selection of a proper method for analyzing potential options, acquisition of suitable metrics or follow-up data, and evaluation of the results are major challenges in the evolution strategy decision making. In order to address these challenges, a framework for Information System Evolution Benefit Assessment (ISEBA) was developed. ISEBA provides assistance in the selection of a benefit-evaluation method for the investment situation at hand. It is based on empirical research on industrial decision making and co-operation projects, and examination of existing researc…

Variants of human CLDN9 cause mild to profound hearing loss
2021
Hereditary deafness is clinically and genetically heterogeneous. We investigated deafness segregating as a recessive trait in two families. Audiological examinations revealed an asymmetric mild to profound hearing loss with childhood or adolescent onset. Exome sequencing of probands identified a homozygous c.475G>A;p.(Glu159Lys) variant of CLDN9 (NM_020982.4) in one family and a homozygous c.370_372dupATC;p.(Ile124dup) CLDN9 variant in an affected individual of a second family. Claudin 9 (CLDN9) is an integral membrane protein and constituent of epithelial bicellular tight junctions that form semi-permeable, paracellular barriers between inner ear perilymphatic and endolymphatic compartment…

Biological invasions are recognized as a significant evolutionary factor over short time scales. In particular, their effect is well recorded on the genetic structure of populations, the patterns of phenotypic evolution and the richness of parasite fauna associated to invasive populations. This study aims at quantifying the consequences of a biological invasion according to these three levels (genetical, phenotypical and parasitological) taking as example the Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus. This African cichlid is characterized by an unusual conservation status since it is both (i) ranked among the world's worst invasive species due to its global dispersion during the 20th centu…
