E-wave and heart rate responses during anticipation of nonmotor events.
1994
This study concentrated on three main questions: 1) can anticipatory late negative shift (expectancy wave, E-wave) be elicited in nonmotor S1-S2 paradigm, 2) is it sensitive to variation of emotional aspects of the task and 3) is there a connection between heart rate (HR) responses and E-wave. S1 was a letter row that was replaced tachistoscopically by another letter row (S2). The task of the subjects (n = 12) was to detect if the critical aspects of S2 were similar to S1. After their delayed response they received feedback of their performance. The emotional aspects of the task were varied by presenting aversive noise bursts at the end of the feedback period either always, contingently to …

Workers’ and volunteers’ ideas about the benefits of young people’s cultural participation : a critical capital-based approach
2020
This article deals with non-profit sector and voluntary workers’ understandings of the benefits of young people’s participation in cultural and leisure projects in Central Finland. Active participation is highlighted on a policy level as a solution to social inequality, exclusion, and marginalisation among young people. The article focuses on the cultural, social, economic, and political dimensions of participation by exploring the advantages that cultural projects bring to young people. The article theorises these dimensions by drawing on Bourdieu’s concept of capital to provide a more critical account of the participation paradigm. Fifteen workers and volunteers on cultural projects were …
Self-perception about emerging digital skills in higher education students
2020
Police violence in West Africa : Perpetrators' and ethnographers' dilemmas
2012
This article explores the use of violence by police officers and gendarmes in Ghana and Niger. We analyse how popular discourses, legal and organizational conditions frame the police use of violence. Acts of violence by police are situated in this inconsistent framework and can be seen as legal and appropriate, despicable and brutal, or as useful and morally legitimate. Thus, every time the police use violence, they face a major dilemma: legally and morally justified violence can be a source of long-term legitimacy; but because of multiple possible readings of a certain situation (according to different, conflicting moral and legal discourses), the very same action has potentially delegiti…
Rewriting Oromo History in the North: Diasporic Discourse about National Identity and Democracy in Ethiopia
2015
This article analyzes the way the Oromo intellectuals living in diaspora have reflected on and positioned themselves in the ethno-political conflict and related debate between the dominant Amharic- and Tigrinya-speaking “Abyssinian” groups and the descendants of the various Oromo groups, which were conquered by the former during the nineteenth century. Even though they are the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia, a large part of the Oromo perceive themselves as discriminated against and exploited by the groups holding political power, and many have fled the country. In the debate, the Oromo diaspora has had an important role. Theoretically, the article takes off from the concept of “orientati…
De la aljama a la corte: aproximación biográfica del médico converso valenciano Pere Pintor (<em>ca</em>. 1423-1508)
2019
This paper deals with the biography of the doctor from Valencia Pere Pintor, a member of a family of Valencian Jewish conversos. He was a doctor who, after training at the Estudi General in Lleida, worked for nearly thirty years in the city of Valencia, in the service of the municipal council, numerous noblemen, and the royal household. As a doctor, he became very successful and well known, and he amassed great wealth in parallel to his social advancement. All this was placed in jeopardy with the establishment, in 1481, of the court of the Holy Inquisition in the kingdom of Valencia, which fiercely attacked and repressed Pintor and his family. As a result of this he left Valencia and moved …

The Mediterranean in the foreign policy of the second Spanish republic
1998
The principal reference points for the foreign policy of the Second Republic were the League of Nations and the Anglo‐French axis. In both areas of policy making, the conditioning factor was Spain's position geographically and strategically and its interest in the security of the western Mediterranean. Its participation in the successive plans to draw up a Mediterranean pact and in the Mediterranean conflicts of the period was characterized by its role as a secondary figure within that axis and by its policy of adaptation as a neutral country to the crisis of the system of collective security.
Pursuing decentralisation : regional cultural policies in Finland and Sweden
2021
In both Finland and Sweden, decentralisation has traditionally been an essential cultural policy aim. This article explores how, by pursuing decentralisation, the regional jurisdictions have been presented with more possibilities to fulfil their purposes and in this way, gain legitimacy in cultural policy. Based on the analysis of political, legal, and administrative documents, three main periods of regional decentralisation in cultural policies are identified: regions as vehicles of welfare policy, regionalisation, and competitive regions. In both countries, national governments have promoted the regional level’s agency, and in doing so, potential institutional change in cultural policy. H…
