SHAPES secure cloud platform for healthcare solutions and services

2020

The SHAPES project is an ambitious endeavour that gathers stakeholders from across Europe to create, deploy and pilot at large-scale a EU-standardised open platform incorporating and integrating a broad range of solutions, including technological, organisational, clinical, educational and societal, to enable the ageing population of Europe to remain healthy, active and productive, as well as to maintain a high quality of life and sense of wellbeing for the longest time possible. Not only each digital solution will be ethical, legal and appropriate for users, but also the results will align with the full and ethically responsible end-to-end exploitation of the new functionalities empowered b…

Small-amplitude collective modes of a finite-size unitary Fermi gas in deformed traps

2019

We have investigated collective breathing modes of a unitary Fermi gas in deformed harmonic traps. The ground state is studied by the Superfluid Local Density Approximation (SLDA) and small-amplitude collective modes are studied by the iterative Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA). The results illustrate the evolutions of collective modes of a small system in traps from spherical to elongated or pancake deformations. For small spherical systems, the influences of different SLDA parameters are significant, and, in particular, a large pairing strength can shift up the oscillation frequency of collective mode. The transition currents from QRPA show that the compressional flow patte…

Factors behind Leisure-Time Physical Activity Behavior Based on Finnish Twin Studies : The Role of Genetic and Environmental Influences and the Role …

2014

Different approaches are being taken to clarify the role of various factors in the development of physical activity behaviors. Genetic studies are a new area of physical activity research and also the motives for physical activity have been widely studied. The purpose of this paper is to review the findings emerging from the longitudinal genetic studies on leisure-time physical activity and to evaluate the associations between motivational factors and leisure-time physical activity. The focus is to review recent findings of longitudinal Finnish twin studies. The results of the latest longitudinal Finnish twin studies point to the existence of age-specific genetic and environmental influence…

Symmetry and equality: Bringing Rancière into the classroom

2018

Jacques Rancière’s sophisticated critique of critical theory is the first step in his call for a renewal of a theory of emancipation. In the first part of the article, the authors outline this critique. Rancière combines pedagogy, art and policy in his attempt to develop a new understanding of equality and emancipation. The authors try as conscientiously as possible to present this argument in the second part of the article. Social and cultural inequalities are increasing in Western societies and have become inconspicuous in schools, and it is against this backdrop that a theory of equality and emancipation is important in regard to early childhood. How can equality be unfolded and interpre…

Lectura participativa en red en la formación de maestros/as #pedagogiaUV19

2020

[EN] This article describes the results of a Teaching Innovation experience approved by the Vice-Principal Office for Occupation and Training Programs at the University of Valencia (UV-SFPIE_PID19-1095891). This project was executed in the first semester of the academic year 2019-2020 within the framework of the General Didactics subject of the degrees of Early Childhood Education and Primary School Education of the Faculty of Teaching at the University of Valencia. The main objective of the project was to create a space for critical, open, participatory and global debate on classical pedagogical ideas (Dewey, Montessori, Freinet and Freire) that would allow improving the pedagogical traini…

‘You know that collaboration works when … ’ identifying the features of successful collaboration on behalf of children with disabilities in early chi…

2017

ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study was to identify features of successful collaboration among professionals and parents involved in supporting children with disabilities in early childhood education and care. The study employed a multiple-case study design comprising 6 cases and 30 adult participants, who were interviewed regarding their collaboration on behalf of 6 children with significant disabilities ranging in age from 3 to 5 years. Applying a system-theoretical approach, analysis led to the development of a framework based on the concepts of ‘internal’ and ‘external’ features of collaboration. Whereas internal aspects refer primarily to the interpersonal interactions of parents and pro…

Voices heard and lessons learnt : Exploring multiple knowledges and local participation in a community-based integrated early childhood development p…

2019

Abstract Following calls for diverse and contextual perspectives of the rich lives of young children, their families and communities from/in the Global South, this paper presents critical reflections emerging from a three-year (2016-2019) communitybased Integrated Approach to Early Childhood Development (ECD) project implemented in the rural Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. It explores the critical relationship established between a range of stakeholders involved in this project as reflected on by two community activists working together in the area of early childhood in the province for thirty years. This article highlights the importance of situating any community development initiati…

Nonlinear PCA for Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Earth Observation Data

2020

Remote sensing observations, products, and simulations are fundamental sources of information to monitor our planet and its climate variability. Uncovering the main modes of spatial and temporal variability in Earth data is essential to analyze and understand the underlying physical dynamics and processes driving the Earth System. Dimensionality reduction methods can work with spatio-temporal data sets and decompose the information efficiently. Principal component analysis (PCA), also known as empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) in geophysics, has been traditionally used to analyze climatic data. However, when nonlinear feature relations are present, PCA/EOF fails. In this article, we pro…

Coxsackievirus A9 Infects Cells via Nonacidic Multivesicular Bodies

2014

ABSTRACT Coxsackievirus A9 (CVA9) is a member of the human enterovirus B species in the Enterovirus genus of the family Picornaviridae . According to earlier studies, CVA9 binds to αVβ3 and αVβ6 integrins on the cell surface and utilizes β2-microglobulin, dynamin, and Arf6 for internalization. However, the structures utilized by the virus for internalization and uncoating are less well understood. We show here, based on electron microscopy, that CVA9 is found in multivesicular structures 2 h postinfection (p.i.). A neutral red labeling assay revealed that uncoating occurs mainly around 2 h p.i., while double-stranded RNA is found in the cytoplasm after 3 h p.i. The biogenesis of multivesicu…
