Occupational hygiene in terms of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and bioaerosols at two solid waste management plants in Finland

Abstract Factors affecting occupational hygiene were measured at the solid waste transferring plant at Hyvinkaa and at the optic separation plant in Hameenlinna. Measurements consisted of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and bioaerosols including microbes, dust and endotoxins. The most abundant compounds in both of the plants were aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, esters of carboxylic acids, ketones and terpenes. In terms of odour generation, the most important emissions were acetic acid, 2,3-butanedione, ethyl acetate, alpha-pinene and limonene due to their low threshold odour concentrations. Centenarians, but not octogenarians, up-regulate the expression of microRNAs

Centenarians exhibit extreme longevity and a remarkable compression of morbidity. They have a unique capacity to maintain homeostatic mechanisms. Since small non-coding RNAs (including microRNAs) are implicated in the regulation of gene expression, we hypothesised that longevity of centenarians may reflect alterations in small non-coding RNA expression. We report the first comparison of microRNAs expression profiles in mononuclear cells from centenarians, octogenarians and young individuals resident near Valencia, Spain. Extraprostatic Spindle Cell Stromal Tumor of the Prostate: Case Report

Several benign and malignant nonepithelial and stromal-like lesions arise in the prostate. Because such lesions are rare, their recognition is essential, because treatment and prognosis depend on an adequate pathohistologic classification. We report a case of an 83-year-old man with a stromal tumor of the prostate of uncertain malignant potential (STUMP). He presented with urinary retention and rectal constipation. While various studies have developed hypotheses about the antecedents of international diversification drawing mainly on the resource-based view, the behavioral theory of the firm, and the transaction costs literature, we advance our understanding by investigating the explanatory power of agency costs of free cash flow arguments. Using a sample panel of 167 Italian firms longitudinally evaluated during the 1980-2010 period, this study tests whether the firm’s choice to spread operations in multiple foreign countries is conditioned by excess of free cash flow and debt, especially in firm-contexts where agency problems are exacerbated by managers or large shareholders’ opportunism. Glutamate Activates Phospholipase D in Hippocampal Slices of Newborn and Adult Rats

Phospholipase D (PLD) is activated by many neurotransmitters in a novel signal transduction pathway. In the present work, PLD activity was studied comparatively in hippocampal slices of newborn and adult rats. Basal PLD activity in adult rats was almost three times higher than in newborn rats. In newborn rats, L-glutamate and 1S,3R-1-aminocyclopentane-1,3-dicarboxylic acid (1S,3R-ACPD) time- and concentration-dependently enhanced the formation of [3H]phosphatidylpropanol ([3H]PP) and of [3H]phosphatidic acid in the presence of 2% propanol. Balance control in aging: improvements in anticipatory postural adjustments and updating of internal models

International audience; Postural stability of older subjects can be estimated during orthostatic equilibrium. However, dynamic equilibrium is also important to investigate risks of fall. It implies different interpretations of measures given by force plates. Same dependant variables (e.g. center of pressure displacement) cannot be interpreted the same ways depending of the type of equilibrium that is investigated. In particular, sways increases during dynamic equilibrium and before movement execution may reflect an improvement of feedforward control.

Pharmacological characterization of uracil nucleotide-preferring P2Y receptors modulating intestinal motility: a study on mouse ileum.

We investigated the possible modulation of the intestinal contractility by uracil nucleotides (UTP and UDP), using as model the murine small intestine. Contractile activity of a mouse ileum longitudinal muscle was examined in vitro as changes in isometric tension. Transcripts encoding for uracil-sensitive receptors was investigated by RT-PCR. UDP induced muscular contractions, sensitive to PPADS, suramin, or MRS 2578, P2Y(6) receptor antagonist, and mimicked by PSB 0474, P2Y(6)-receptor agonist.
