Effects of nitrogen fertilization on soil N2O reducing bacteria and their importance for mitigating N2O emissions

2016

EABIOmECT3; Arable soils are a major source of nitrous oxide (N2O). The only known sink in Earth’s biosphere is the reduction of N2O to N2 via the N2O reductase encoded by the nosZ gene, identified as nosZ clade I and II. The nosZI gene is mainly found among denitrifying bacteria, whereas >50% of microorganisms with nosZII lack other denitrification genes. The abundance and phylogenetic diversity of nosZII was previously shown to correlate with a soils N2O sink capacity. To provide a proof of principle, we manipulated 11 indigenous soil microbial communities by increasing the abundance of a non-denitrifying N2O-reducing strain capable of growth with N2O as the only electron acceptor. Conseq…

Microbial communities in full-scale woodchip bioreactors treating aquaculture effluents.

2021

Woodchip bioreactors are being successfully applied to remove nitrate from commercial land-based recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) effluents. In order to understand and optimize the overall function of these bioreactors, knowledge on the microbial communities, especially on the microbes with potential for production or mitigation of harmful substances (e.g. hydrogen sulfide; H2S) is needed. In this study, we quantified and characterized bacterial and fungal communities, including potential H2S producers and consumers, using qPCR and high throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene. We took water samples from bioreactors and their inlet and outlet, and sampled biofilms growing on woodchips a…

DISTRIBUTING RESPONSIBILITY BETWEEN SHIPMASTERS AND THE DIFFERENT STATES INVOLVED IN SAR DISASTERS

2019

The duty to save life at sea can today be considered a rule of general inter- national law. However, the concept of “duty to save life at sea” hides a complex web of international regulations, scattered across several treaties providing obli- gations both for shipmasters and a plurality of States (namely flag States, coastal States, States receiving distress signals, etc.). This paper addresses the question of the respective responsibility of the different subjects involved in search and res- cue activities. After a short introduction to the evolution of international law in this field, the paper investigates the relationship between shipmasters and States. This first part of the study show…

Two Solutions to an Unsolvable Problem: Connecting Origami and GeoGebra in a Serbian High School

2014

Our “Visuality & Mathematics — Experiential Education of Mathematics Through the Use of Visual Art, Science, and Playful Activities” Tempus Project started in 2012 with the cooperation of eight European universities and scientific institutions, in order to develop Serbian mathematics education with technological equipment and interactive, experience-centered, and art-related content. The general objectives of this two-year-long project are justified by the findings of the PISA 2012 survey as well, which show that 15-year old Serbian students' mathematics performance is significantly below the OECD average. For the improvement of the Serbian students' mathematical literacy and abilities, wha…

Modeling Vaccine Allocations in the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Case Study in Australia

2020

Timely allocation and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines on a large scale is a highly complex, dynamic, and context-specific task. The focus of this research on optimizing vaccine allocation is on the downstream part of a COVID-19 vaccine supply chain. Previous research on vaccine supply chains and pandemic supply chains has not fully incorporated the multitude of factors and underlying constraints affecting a vaccine supply chain which can be optimized to mitigate the risk of infection. An effective model is needed to conceptualize the process of the downstream vaccine supply chain to ensure efficient coordination and timely distribution of vaccines to the population. This paper develops a …

Scatter search for an uncapacitated p-hub median problem

2015

Scatter search is a population-based method that has been shown to yield high-quality outcomes for combinatorial optimization problems. It uses strategies for combining solution vectors that have proved effective in a variety of problem settings. In this paper, we present a scatter search implementation for an NP -hard variant of the classic p-hub median problem. Specifically, we tackle the uncapacitated r-allocation p-hub median problem, which consists of minimizing the cost of transporting the traffics between nodes of a network through special facilities that act as transshipment points. This problem has a significant number of applications in practice, such as the design of transportati…

Cultivation ofZymomonas mobilis 113 S at Different Mixing Regimes and their Influence on the Levan Formation

2001

The Zymomonas mobilis I 13 S strain was cultivated in a bioreactor with a working volume of 1.4 I at different stirring regimes in a 15% initial sucrose medium The levan obtained in the fermentation process was analyzed by gel filtration. Because the sucrose/biomass ratio in the fermentation broth decreased to below 300 g/g, the insufficient concentration of sucrose might have decreased the concentration of levan. Besides the growth characteristics of the population, the mixing intensity and flow structure were also found to influence the molecular mass of levan. At 600 rpm, the microorganisms produced levan with a molecular mass lower than at 300 rpm. The stirring of a fermentation broth w…

Chitosan films for the microbiological preservation of refrigerated sole and hake fillets

2013

The effect of chitosan films for shelf-life extension of fresh fillets of hake (Merluccius merluccius) and sole (Solea solea) was evaluated over a 15-day storage at 4 ± 1 °C. Fish fillets wrapped in a chitosan matrix were individually packaged in air (AP) and under vacuum (VP). Microbiological analyses (total aerobic mesophilic bacteria, Pseudomonas, H2S-producing bacteria, lactic acid bacteria, Enterobacteriaceae and Listeria monocytogenes were carried out during the shelf-life. The microbial species were inhibited (p < 0.05) by the presence of chitosan films, especially under VP conditions. A significant (p < 0.05) increase of the lag phase and a reduction of the final microbial populatio…
