Clinical evaluation of piezoelectric ear surgery

We evaluated the use of piezoelectric surgery (Piezosurgery; Mectron Medical Technology; Carasco, Genoa, Italy) as a means of avoiding some complications of osteotomy and osteoplasty in otologic surgery, particularly in classic canal-wall-up mastoidectomy. Piezoelectric surgery is a recently developed system for cutting bone with microvibrations created by the piezoelectric effect. This effect occurs when an electric current is passed through certain ceramics and crystals, causing them to oscillate at ultrasonic frequencies. Diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of reversible ischaemic deficits of the brainstem

Objectives: To evaluate the sensitivity of diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the diagnosis of clinically suspected reversible ischaemic deficits of the brainstem. Methods: A total of 158 consecutive patients presenting with acute signs of brainstem dysfunction were investigated using EPI diffusion weighted MRI within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms. High resolution T1 and T2 weighted imaging was performed as a follow up after a median of six days Results: Fourteen of the 158 patients had a complete clinical recovery within 24 hours (transitory ischaemic attack (TIA)), and 19 patients recovered in less than one week (prolonged reversible neurological deficit (RIND)). …

On-eye optical quality of daily disposable contact lenses for different wearing times

Purpose To quantify the optical quality of various daily disposable contact lenses in vivo and to ascertain its variation in terms of wearing time by means of objective non-invasive determination of wavefront patterns. Methods The crx1 adaptive-optics system was used to measure the wavefront aberrations in 15 myopic eyes before and at 2-h intervals after contact lens fitting, over a 12-h wearing period. An alternative clinical routine for subjective refraction based on power vectors with trial frames.

PURPOSE Subjective refraction determines the final point of refractive error assessment in most clinical environments and its foundations have remained unchanged for decades. The purpose of this paper is to compare the results obtained when monocular subjective refraction is assessed in trial frames by a new clinical procedure based on a pure power vector interpretation with conventional clinical refraction procedures. Postoperative astigmatism and rotational stability after Artisan toric phakic intraocular lens implantation

Abstract Purpose To evaluate deviations in the axis (intended versus achieved) and postoperative astigmatism after implantation of an Artisan toric phakic intraocular lens (IOL). Setting University Eye Hospital, Mainz, Germany. Methods This prospective study comprised 29 eyes with high ametropia and astigmatism. All eyes had uneventful implantation of a toric phakic IOL through a superior scleral tunnel incision at 12 o’clock. A dangerous design for a mountain bike.

The case of a man’s death as a consequence of an accident with a mountain bike was examined. Despite only slight external injuries, a general examination revealed the existence of a rupture of the diaphragm which was the ultimate cause of death. The discussion reconstructs the way the accident occurred and briefly analyses the consequences of safety design in two-wheeled vehicles.

Plaque removal efficacy of power and manual toothbrushes: a comparative study

The aim of this study was to compare the plaque removal efficacy of a new oscillating/rotating/pulsating toothbrush [Oral-B® Professional Care® 8500 (PC 8500)] with two manual toothbrushes [Oral-B® CrossAction™ Vitalizer (CAV) and Oral-B® Indicator™ (IND), respectively]. The safety of the PC 8500 was also assessed. The study was a single-use, observer-masked, randomised 3×3 Latin square crossover design balanced for carryover effects.
