New Alternative in the Methodology of Extraction and Dyeing with Active Molecules Derived from Vegetal Sources

2016

Abstract The general objective of this study refers to the identification of a sustainable and physical methodology of extraction of active compounds, envisaging the preservation of the high purity active natural dye molecule from nut shell (juglone), even under the conditions of an extraction performed in a mixt solvent medium (water-ethanol). The second major objective of the study consists of the application of these above mentioned dyes onto natural and synthetic substrates, thus making a correlation between their colour attributes and the fibrous composition of the substrates they are applied on. The motivation of this research was given by the identification of an improved extraction …

Confinement of chiral molecules in reverse micelles: FT-IR, polarimetric and VCD investigation on the state of dimethyl tartrate in sodium bis(2-ethy…

2008

Abstract The state of d and l -dimethyl tartrate confined within dry sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) reverse micelles dispersed in CCl 4 has been investigated by FT-IR spectroscopy, polarimetry, and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD). Measurements have been performed at 25 °C as a function of the solubilizate-to-surfactant molar ratio ( R ) at a fixed AOT concentration (0.158 M). The analysis of experimental data is consistent with the hypothesis that both enantiomers of dimethyl tartrate are mainly entrapped in the reverse micelles and located in proximity to the surfactant head-group region. The formation of this interesting self-organized chiral nanostructure involves som…

Microchemical surface analysis of historic copper-based coins by the combined use of FIB-FESEM-EDX, OM, FTIR spectroscopy and solid-state electrochem…

2019

[EN] A multi-technique strategy, including microscopy, spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques, is proposed to study thin corrosion layers that form on the surface of historic copper-based coins. An accurate characterisation of this external corrosion layer is important for selecting a suitable conservation and/or restoration treatment. For this purpose, a series of copper-based coins from different historical periods and provenances, which mainly exhibited atmospheric corrosion, was analysed. The morphology of the corrosion layer and the upper core of coins was studied in trenches done on coin surfaces with a focused ion beam gun, coupled to a field emission scanning electron microsco…

THE SAN VITO WOODEN PULPIT FROM MUSEO DIOCESANO OF PALERMO, ITALY: MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH AND ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES FOR DATING AND RESTORATION

2017

The aim of the present research is to investigate the constitutive materials and the execution techniques of San Vito wooden pulpit from Museo Diocesano of Palermo (Italy) and to provide helpful information to dating it in addition to technical, historical and artistic evaluations. The pulpit, attributed to unknown artist, belongs to the decorative arts and the most relevant feature is its double dating, in addition to the singular painting technique: it has a linear structure typical of XIXth century and three polychrome and gilded panels probably dated to the end of XVIIth century. This paper describes the application of analytical techniques (imaging diagnostics techniques, Scanning Elec…

Impact of the ΔPhe configuration on the Boc-Gly-ΔPhe-NHMe conformation: experiment and theory

2019

Conformational propensities of N-t-butoxycarbonyl-glycine-(E/Z)-dehydrophenylalanine N′-methylamides (Boc-Gly-(E/Z)-ΔPhe-NHMe) in chloroform were investigated by NMR and IR techniques. The low-temperature crystal structure of the E isomer was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction and the experimental data were elaborated by theoretical calculations using DFT (B3LYP, M06-2X) and MP2 approaches. The β-turn tendencies for both isomers were determined in the gas phase and in the presence of solvent. The obtained results reveal that the configuration of ΔPhe residue significantly affects the conformations of the studied dehydropeptides. The tendency to adopt β-turn conformations is sign…

Surface processes in selective photocatalytic oxidation of hydroxybenzyl alcohols by TiO2 P25

2023

Aryl aldehydes and acids are important industrial intermediates, but their synthesis from the corresponding alcohols often requires the use of high temperatures and harmful solvents and oxidant agents. Heterogeneous photocatalysis represents an interesting option for the partial oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes at room temperature using water as solvent. In this work, the partial photocatalytic oxidation of 2-hydroxybenzyl alcohol (salicyl alcohol) and 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol to the corresponding aldehydes and acids has been compared, under environmental-friendly conditions, employing TiO2 P25 as photocatalyst in water. The selectivity to the corresponding aldehydes and acids, under the s…

Estudio del biodeterioro en resinas alquídicas usadas como aglutinante en pinturas modernas mediante espectroscopía FTIR y pirólisis-cromatografía de…

2008

Evaluation of the alteration produced by microbiological attack on alkyd resins has been carried out by FTIR spectroscopy and Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). The latter included the online derivatisation of alkyd resins using hexamethyldisilazane during pyrolysis. Specimens consisting of thin films of resins formed on glass slides were used. Analyses performed on the specimens in which different genera of bacteria and fungi were inoculated and allowed to grow, indicate that the attack of microorganisms encourages the scissioning of the polymeric resins and the appearance of short-chain fatty acids. IR bands ascribed to carboxylic acids appearing in samples from in…
