Effect of Hydration Procedure of Fumed Silica Precursor on the Formation of Luminescent Carbon Centers in SiO 2 :C Nanocomposites

2019

The effect of hydration procedure of fumed silica precursor on photoluminescent properties of carbonized silica (SiO2:C) nanocomposite after chemo/thermal treatments is studied. Main structural effect is the formation of chemical bonding of phenyl groups to silica surface via multiple CSiO bonding bridges. Synthesized samples demonstrate very broad photoluminescence (PL) bands in near ultraviolet and visible ranges with maximum intensity dependent on temperature of thermal annealing. Two main trends in luminescence properties are: 1) hydration-induced blue shift of PL in comparison with PL of unhydrated series; 2) red shift of PL bands with increasing synthesis temperature regardless hydr…

Accelerated weathering of PP based nanocomposites: Effect of the presence of maleic anhydryde grafted polypropylene

2013

Polymer nanocomposites are currently a topic of great interest. The increasing importance they are gaining also in the standpoint of industrial applications, is giving concerns regarding their environmental stability and, in general, their behaviour in outdoor applications, under direct solar irradiation. Papers available in the literature have highlighted the different influences of different nanosized fillers, in particular clay-based nanofillers; however, few data are available regarding other nanosized fillers. Furthermore, the research on polymer nanocomposites has clearly pointed out that the use of compatibilizers is required to improve the mechanical performance and the dispersion o…

The Molecular and Crystal Structure of tert-Butyl N.ALPHA.-tert-Butoxycarbonyl-L-(S-trityl)cysteinate and the Conformation-Stabilizing Function of We…

2001

The title compound, C31H37NO4S [systematic name: (R)-tert-butyl-2-[(tert-butoxycarbonyl)amino]-3-(tritylsulfanyl)propanoate] is an L-cysteine derivative with three functions: NH2, COOH and SH, blocked by protecting groups tert-butoxycarbonyl, tert-butyl and trityl, respectively. The main chain of the molecule adopts the extended, nearly all-trans C5 conformation with the intramolecular N-H...O=C hydrogen bond. The urethane group is not involved in any intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Only weak intermolecular hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic contacts are observed in the crystal structure. These are C-H...O hydrogen bonds and CH/pi interactions with donor...acceptor distances, C...O ca. 3.5 A a…

Scientific studies for the restoration of a wood painting of the Galleria Interdisciplinare Regionale della Sicilia—Palazzo Mirto di Palermo

2016

Abstract The Ritratto muliebre, referring to Venus, is a panel painting, oil on wood, attributed to unknown artist and probably dated to the second half of 16th century, today conserved in the Galleria Interdisciplinare Regionale della Sicilia—Palazzo Mirto of Palermo. The aim of this research was to assess the techniques used to decorate the wooden painting and to verify the state of conservation of the artwork's materials but also to identify the previous treatments. This study was the essential condition to plane and perform the correct restoration. For this reason, an integrated analytical approach based on the use of non-invasive and micro-invasive techniques was used, with the aim to …

Roadmap on STIRAP applications

2019

STIRAP (stimulated Raman adiabatic passage) is a powerful laser-based method, usually involving two photons, for efficient and selective transfer of populations between quantum states. A particularly interesting feature is the fact that the coupling between the initial and the final quantum states is via an intermediate state, even though the lifetime of the latter can be much shorter than the interaction time with the laser radiation. Nevertheless, spontaneous emission from the intermediate state is prevented by quantum interference. Maintaining the coherence between the initial and final state throughout the transfer process is crucial. STIRAP was initially developed with applications in …

Conformational investigation of alpha,beta-dehydropeptides. VIII. N-acetyl-alpha,beta-dehydroamino acid N'-methylamides: conformation and electron de…

2009

The Fourier transform infrared spectra are analyzed in the regions of Vs(N-H), amide I, amide II and Vs(C alpha = C beta) bands for a series of Ac-delta Xaa-NHMe, where delta Xaa = delta Ala, (Z)-delta Abu, (Z)-delta Leu, (Z)-delta Phe and delta Val, to determine the predominant solution conformation of these alpha,beta-dehydropeptide-related molecules and the electron distribution perturbation in their amide bonds. The measurements were performed in dichloromethane (DCM). To confirm and rationalize the assignments, the spectra of the respective series of saturated Ac-Xaa-NHMe, recorded in DCM, and the spectra of these two series of unsaturated and saturated compounds, recorded in acetonitr…

Thermal aggregation of beta-lactoglobulin in presence of metal ions.

2007

In this work, we report a study of the effects of zinc and copper ions on the heat-induced aggregation of beta-lactoglobulin (BLG). Kinetics investigations on aggregates growth by light scattering measurements and on secondary structure changes by FTIR absorption measurements show the different role played by the two metals during the whole process. In particular, the presence of zinc in solution promotes the formation of aggregates of BLG at a lower temperature than copper. Then, at fixed temperature, formation of a large amount of aggregates, of large dimension, is observed for Zn-BLG in shorter time; on the contrary, the presence of copper in solution does not affect the aggregation proc…

Crypthecodinium cohnii Growth and Omega Fatty Acid Production in Mediums Supplemented with Extract from Recycled Biomass

2022

Crypthecodinium cohnii is a marine heterotrophic dinoflagellate that can accumulate high amounts of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), and thus has the potential to replace conventional PUFAs production with eco-friendlier technology. So far, C. cohnii cultivation has been mainly carried out with the use of yeast extract (YE) as a nitrogen source. In the present study, alternative carbon and nitrogen sources were studied: the extraction ethanol (EE), remaining after lipid extraction, as a carbon source, and dinoflagellate extract (DE) from recycled algae biomass C. cohnii as a source of carbon, nitrogen, and vitamins. In mediums with glucose and DE, the highest specific biomass gr…
