Occurrence of selected antibiotics and antiretroviral drugs in Nairobi River Basin, Kenya.

In this paper, we investigated the occurrence of three antibiotics (sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim and ciprofloxacin) and three antiretroviral (lamivudine, nevirapine and zidovudine) drugs in the Nairobi River Basin, Kenya. The analytical procedure involved extraction using solid phase extraction followed by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (SPE-LC-ESI-MS/MS). In this study, 40 sites were selected for sampling, including 38 sites along the rivers and 2 wastewater treatment effluent sites. The present study examined whether activity energy expenditure related to body mass (AEE/kg) is associated with maximal aerobic fitness (VO2max), energy balance, and body mass index (BMI) during the 2 hardest weeks of the military basic training season (BT). An additional purpose was to study the accuracy of the pre-filled food diary energy intake. Energy expenditure (EE) with doubly labeled water, energy intake (EI), energy balance, and mis-recording was measured from 24 male conscripts with varying VO2max. Alun perin pohjoisamerikkalaisen täpläravun (Pacifastacus leniusculus Dana) levinneisyys on 1960-luvulta lähtien laajentunut kattamaan Etelä- ja Keski-Suomessa laajoja vesialueita, jotka ovat aiemmin olleet jokiravun (Astacus astacus L.) elinaluetta. Täpläravun mahdollisesti jokiravusta eroavaa ravinnonkulutusta ja saalislajeihin kohdistamaa saalistusta on pyritty arvioimaan täpläravulle kehitetyllä bioenergeettisellä mallilla, jonka jatkokehitystä ja toimivuuden arviointia tämä tutkimus tukee. Vaarantuneiden jokirapukantojen uhkana on vesistöihimme hyvin sopeutunut vieraslaji, täplärapu, ja sen kantama, erityisesti jokiravuille kohtalokas rapuruton muoto. Rapupopulaatioiden paikantaminen ja seuranta on perinteisesti perustunut paikallistietoon ja koeravustuksiin. Viime vuosien aikana ympäristö-DNA:n (eDNA) käyttöön perustuvat menetelmät ovat kehittyneet varteenotettavaksi vaihtoehdoksi perinteisten menetelmien rinnalle. eDNA-menetelmän avulla voidaan vesinäytteestä tunnistaa kohde-eliöt molekyylibiologisin menetelmin.
