Catholics in the Irish Parliament: Daniel O'Connell and his influence in Italy

2014

Daniel O'Connell (Cahersiveen 1775 - Genoa 1847), an Irish politician and patriot, fought for Catholic Emancipation, to repeal the penal laws discriminating Irish Catholics and the Act of Union. Believing firmly in non-violence, he defended the representation of Irish Catholics in Parliament as the most appropriate instrument to support their rights. His thoughts and actions were spread and known in Italy and Europe while some Catholics were arguing on a possible reconciliation between religion and freedom and on the resulting openness to the principles of democracy and to the problem of representation. The Theatine Gioacchino Ventura from Palermo, one of the leaders of the Sicilian 1848 re…

The Language and Stereotype of Italians in Irish Culture

2009

This book examines the language of stereotyping produced by Irish journalists of The Irish Times and by Irish writers in their description, creation and interpretation of Italians living in Ireland and in Italy. The so-called Celtic Tiger phenomenon of economic boom has modified the images of Italians in Ireland, contributing to a shift from stereotypes to the so-called imagotypes. While in Ireland Italians have recently been “replaced” by such ethnic identities like Poles and Nigerians, and have consequently become more silent, in their home country they still retain those traits which can be defined truly stereotypical and which are especially perpetuated by the press. Detecting the prese…

Translating Italy. Notes on Irish Poets Reading Italian Poetry.

2005

Translating Italy.Notes on Irish Poets Reading Italian Poetry During the last few years, literary translation has become a relevant part of some Irish writers’ activity. Such poets as Seamus Heaney, Derek Mahon, Paul Muldoon, Eamon Grennan, Desmond O’Grady, among others, sometimes seemed to have been more concerned about translating than about writing. Translation has offered itself as an occasion for literary experimentation, rewriting as well as for learning and discussing about other worlds. A sociocultural perspective – entailing the notion of ‘cultural identity’ – has here been applied to a linguistic analysis of such texts in translation
