Influence of a Crosslinker Containing an Azo Group on the Actuation Properties of a Photoactuating LCE System

Photoactuating liquid crystalline elastomers (LCE) are promising candidates for an application as artificial muscles in microdevices. In this work, we demonstrate that by optimizing (1) the illumination conditions and (2) the mixture of azo monomer and azo crosslinker, thick films of an all-azo LCE can be prepared, which show a strong length change without bending during photoactuation. This becomes possible by working with white light (about 440 nm), whose absorption is low, leading to a large penetration depth. Low-temperature positron-lifetime studies of proton-irradiated silicon

The positron-lifetime technique has been used to identify defects created in high-purity single-crystal silicon by irradiation with 12-MeV protons at 15 K, and the evolution of the defects has been studied by subsequent annealings between 20 and 650 K. Two clear annealing steps were seen in the samples, the first starting at 100 K and the other at 400 K. The first is suggested to be a result of the migration of free, negatively charged monovacancies, and the second is connected to the annealing of some vacancy-impurity complexes, probably negatively charged vacancy-oxygen pairs. Abstract This chapter reports the main techniques used to synthesize powders and films of heterogeneous catalysts and photocatalysts, often used for similar processes. Traditional preparation processes of bulky (photo)catalysts including precipitation, sol–gel technique, hydrothermal or solvothermal method, solid-state reactions, and flame syntheses were briefly described. The sonochemical method and microwave irradiation technique were also considered. A titanium alloy Ti-6 Al(wt%)-4V(wt%) was treated in air by Nd:YAG laser radiation (wavelength of 1.064 %m) in continuous mode. Targets were irradiated globally with different levels of energy (accumulated fluence) at constant power. Different focal lengths and beam displacement velocities were used. Cross section microstructural observations were carried out by scanning electron microscopy. Backscattered electron imaging reveals microstructural modifications in samples. Abstract The objective of the present work was to estimate the influence of pulsed laser irradiation on the removal of the oxide layer, which is developed on the surface of stainless steels during their exposure to high temperature oxidation. In general, this layer is a protective one, mainly against corrosion. However, in many manufacturing applications or maintenance work, the removal of the oxides is necessary; for example, the metallic surfaces should be cleaned before welding, otherwise the presence of oxides increases the tendency to brittle behaviour of the joint. Abstract Beryllium pebbles are foreseen as a neutron multiplier in the tritium breeding blanket of the future fusion devices. Tritium inventory in the beryllium as a result of neutron-induced transmutations is a significant safety and technological issue for the operation of the breeding blanket. In this study, beryllium pebbles from 3 different irradiation experiments: BERYLLIUM, EXOTIC 8/3-13 and PBA, performed at High Flux Reactor HFR have been investigated.
