Experimental determination of anIπ=2−ground state inCu72,74

2010

This article reports on the ground-state spin and moments measured in $^{72,74}\mathrm{Cu}$ using collinear laser spectroscopy at the CERN On-Line Isotope Mass Separator (ISOLDE) facility. From the measured hyperfine coefficients, the nuclear observables $\ensuremath{\mu}$(${}^{72}\mathrm{Cu})=\ensuremath{-}1.3472(10){\ensuremath{\mu}}_{N}$, $\ensuremath{\mu}({}^{74}\mathrm{Cu})=\ensuremath{-}1.068(3){\ensuremath{\mu}}_{N}$, $Q({}^{72}\mathrm{Cu})=+8(2) {\mathrm{efm}}^{2}$, $Q({}^{74}\mathrm{Cu})=+26(3) {\mathrm{efm}}^{2}$, $I({}^{72}\mathrm{Cu})=2$, and $I({}^{74}\mathrm{Cu})=2$ have been determined. Through a comparison of the measured magnetic moments with different models, the negative …

Microscopic anharmonic vibrator approach for beta decays

2007

Abstract We formulate a microscopic description of charge-changing excitations, including dynamical mixture of one- and two-phonon states. The present formalism generalizes our previous microscopic anharmonic vibrator approach (MAVA), designed to treat charge-conserving two- and four-quasiparticle degrees of freedom and their mixing. In the present formalism, the proton–neutron MAVA, pnMAVA, the main building blocks are the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) phonons in the charge-conserving channels, and the proton–neutron QRPA (pnQRPA) phonons in the charge-changing channels. The QRPA and pnQRPA equations are directly used in deriving the equations of motion for two-phonon sta…

Experimental study of the halo nucleusHe6using theLi6(γ,π+)He6reaction

2007

The reaction $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$($\ensuremath{\gamma},{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+})$$^{6}\mathrm{He}$ was studied over the angular range ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}=40$--150$\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}$ with the aim of investigating the halo structure of $^{6}\mathrm{He}$. Photons from a bremsstrahlung beam were tagged in the energy range ${E}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}=170$--220 MeV at a resolution of $\ensuremath{\Delta}{E}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}=630$ keV, and positively charged pions detected using high resolution stacked HpGe detectors. The measured angular distributions for the resolved $^{6}\mathrm{He}$ ground and 1.80 MeV excited states are compared to previous measurements a…

Production and characterization of a custom-made 228Th source with reduced neutron source strength for the Borexino experiment

2012

A custom-made 228Th source of several MBq activity was produced for the Borexino experiment for studying the external background of the detector. The aim was to reduce the unwanted neutron emission produced via (alpha,n) reactions in ceramics used typically for commercial 228Th sources. For this purpose a ThCl4 solution was converted chemically into ThO2 and embedded into a gold foil. The paper describes the production and the characterization of the custom-made source by means of gamma-activity, dose rate and neutron source strength measurements. From gamma-spectroscopic measurements it was deduced that the activity transfer from the initial solution to the final source was >91% (at 68%…

Nuclear moments of neon isotopes in the range fromNe17at the proton drip line to neutron-richNe25

2005

Nuclear moments of odd-A neon isotopes in the range 17 ≤ A ≤ 25 have been determined from optical hyperfine structures measured by collinear fast-beam laser spectroscopy. The magnetic dipole moments of 17 Ne, 23 Ne and 25 Ne, as well as the electric quadrupole moment of 23 Ne are either reported for the first time or improved considerably. The measurements also decide for a 1/2 + ground state of 25 Ne. The behavior of the magnetic moments of the proton drip-line nucleus 17 Ne and its mirror partner 17 N suggests isospin symmetry. Thus, no clear indication of an anomalous nuclear structure is found for 17 Ne. The magnetic moments of the investigated nuclei are discussed in a shell-model appr…

Collinear laser spectroscopy of neutron-rich cerium isotopes near theN= 88 shape transition

2003

Laser spectroscopy has been used to measure the isotope shifts of 146Ce and 148Ce relative to 144Ce, Z = 58. The new data, in combination with existing optical data on the stable isotopes and radioactive 144Ce isotope, permits a study of charge radii variations for the even-N Ce nuclei from N = 78 to N = 90. This range covers both the N = 82 shell closure and the N = 88 shape transition region. A marked increase in deformation occurs at N = 88 for elements with Z ≥ 60 but not for those with Z ≤ 56. The new data for Ce (Z = 58) show an intermediate behaviour, resulting in a smooth increase in deformation with Z in the N = 88, 90 region.

Direct mass measurements of neutron-deficient xenon isotopes with the ISOLTRAP mass spectrometer

2000

Abstract The masses of Xe isotopes with 124⩾ A ⩾114 have been measured using the ISOLTRAP spectrometer at the on-line mass separator ISOLDE/CERN. A mass resolving power of 500 000 was chosen resulting in an accuracy of δm ≈12 keV for all isotopes investigated. Conflicts with existing mass data of several standard deviations were found.

Study of medium-spin states of neutron-rich 87, 89, 91Rb isotopes

2019

International audience; Excited states of the rubidium isotopes$_{37}^{87, 89, 91}$Rb have been studied at the INFN Legnaro National Laboratory. Measurements of the $\gamma$ -ray decay of fragments produced in binary grazing reactions resulting from the interaction of a beam of 530 MeV$^{96}$Zr ions with a$^{124}$Sn target have been complemented by studies of the $\gamma$ -ray decay of fission fragments produced in the interaction of a beam of 230 MeV$^{36}$S ions with a thick$^{176}$Yb target. The structure of the yrast states of$_{37}^{87, 89, 91}$Rb has been discussed within the context of spherical shell-model and cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations.

Nuclear ground state spins of short-lived strontium isotopes

1987

Nuclear ground state spins of the odd-mass strontium isotopes between A=79 and 97 were determined by measurements of the hyperfine structure in the ionic transition 5s2S1/2−5p2P3/2. The spins of93Sr and97Sr are revised to I=5/2 and I=1/2, respectively, while assignments for the remaining isotopes are confirmed.

Nuclear spins, moments and charge radii of108?111Sn

1987

The hyperfine structure splittings (hfs) and isotope shifts (IS) in the atomic transitions 5s2 5p21S0 → 5s2 5p6s1,3P1 have been measured for the radioactive isotopes108−111Sn and all stable ones. The tin isotopes were prepared as fast atomic beams for collinear laser spectroscopy at the GSI online mass separator following a fusion reaction. Nuclear spins, magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole moments and changes in mean square charge radii have been determined. In109Sn the spinI=5/2 was measured for the nuclear ground state (T1/2=18 min) in contradiction to the literature value. The mean square charge radii show a parabolic behaviour with a maximum at N=66. This is interpreted by collective …
