Mineral metabolism and haemoglobin concentration among haemodialysis patients in the Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (DOPPS)
2005
Bone and mineral metabolism is abnormal in most chronic haemodialysis patients and is associated with a high mortality risk. Because of possible pathogenic links between anaemia and intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), the present study evaluated associations of mineral metabolism indicators with haemoglobin (Hb).Data were collected from 317 facilities (12 089 haemodialysis patients) in Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States by the Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (DOPPS). The major outcome studied was probability of haemodialysis patients having a target Hb, per guidelines, of/=11 g/dl at ba…
Patients requiring interruption of long-term oral anticoagulant therapy: the use of fixed sub-therapeutic doses of low-molecular weight heparin.
2009
Introduction: We tested the efficacy and safety of fixed doses of Low-Molecular Weight Heparin (LMWH) in patients requiring interruption of Vitamin-k Antagonist (VKA) because of invasive procedures Methodology: Pre-operatively, patients discontinued VKA 5 +/- 1days; in those at low-risk for thrombosis, LMWH was given at a prophylactic dosage of 3.800 U.I. (nadroparin) or 4.000 U.I. (enoxaparin) anti-FXa once daily the night before the procedure. In patients at high-risk for thrombosis, LMWH was started early after VKA cessation and given at fixed sub-therapeutic doses (3.800 or 4.000 UI anti-FXa twice daily) until surgery. Post-operatively, LMWH was reinitiated 12 hours after procedure whil…
Improved multilineage response of hematopoiesis in patients with myelodysplastic syndromes to a combination therapy with all-trans-retinoic acid, gra…
1996
Differentiation induction therapy is being tested in myelodysplastic syndromes to ameliorate maturation defects and to restore normal hematopoietic function. To this end, 17 patients (eight with refractory anemia, two with refractory anemia and ring sideroblasts, and seven with refractory anemia and excess of blast cells) were treated with a combination of all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA), granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), erythropoietin (EPO), and alpha-tocopherol for durations of 8-16 weeks. Absolute neutrophil counts increased in all patients; platelet counts increased in five patients with discontinuation of transfusion needs in two of four transfusion-dependent patients. Sti…
Vitamin D kinetics in the acute phase of critical illness: A prospective observational study.
2017
Abstract Purpose The objective of this study was to assess the vitamin D kinetics in critically ill patients by performing periodic serum vitamin D measurements in short time intervals in the initial phase of a critical illness. Materials and methods We performed vitamin D serum measurements: at admission and then in 12-hour time intervals. The minimum number of vitamin D measurements was 4, and the maximum was 8 per patient. Results A total of 363 patients were evaluated for participation, and 20 met the inclusion criteria. All patients had an initial serum vitamin D level between 10.6 and 39 ng/mL. Nineteen patients had vitamin D levels between 10 and 30 ng/mL, which means that they had v…
AZT treatment induces molecular and ultrastructural oxidative damage to muscle mitochondria. Prevention by antioxidant vitamins.
1998
AIDS patients who receive zidovudine (AZT) frequently suffer from myopathy. This has been attributed to mitochondrial (mt) damage, and specifically to the loss of mtDNA. This study examines whether AZT causes oxidative damage to DNA in patients and to skeletal muscle mitochondria in mice, and whether this damage may be prevented by supranutritional doses of antioxidant vitamins. Asymptomatic HIV-infected patients treated with AZT have a higher urinary excretion (355+/-100 pmol/kg/d) of 8-oxo-7, 8-dihydro-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-oxo-dG) (a marker of oxidative damage to DNA) than untreated controls (asymptomatic HIV-infected patients) (182+/-29 pmol/kg/d). This was prevented (110+/-79 pmol/kg/d)…
A Narrative Review about Nutritional Management and Prevention of Oral Mucositis in Haematology and Oncology Cancer Patients Undergoing Antineoplasti…
2021
Cancer is a prevalent disease worldwide, and treatments such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy sometimes lead to adverse events. Oral mucositis is one of the most disabling adverse events, and clinical guidelines do not take into account nutritional interventions. The primary endpoint was to gather the evidence about the efficacy of nutritional interventions in the prevention and/or treatment of antineoplastic-induced oral mucositis in oncological patients. A bibliographic review was carried out in the PubMed data base by combining MeSH terms with Boolean operators. Articles were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria; 50 final articles were found. Although further evidence is ne…
Moderate intake of n-3 fatty acids is associated with stable erythrocyte resistance to oxidative stress in hypertriglyceridemic subjects.
2001
Background The important triacylglycerol-lowering capacity of n-3 fatty acids is counterbalanced by their inherent sensitivity to oxidation. Inconsistent results about the latter have been reported in hypertriglyceridemic individuals. After incorporation into cell membranes, n-3 fatty acids may alter membrane-related functions. In view of the distinct composition of hypertriglyceridemic membranes and the prooxidant status in this condition, it can be surmised that cell enrichment with the oxidizable n-3 fatty acids will be associated with an increased hemolytic process. Objective We sought to evaluate the effect of fish oil consumption on n-3 fatty acid incorporation into erythrocyte membra…
Parental occupational exposure to organic solvents and anencephaly in Mexico
2009
Objective: To assess the relationship between parental occupational exposure to organic solvents, and the risk of anencephaly in Mexico. Methods: A case-control study was conducted based on the registers of the Epidemiological Surveillance System for Neural Tube Defects in Mexico; 151 cases of anencephaly of ≥20 weeks’ gestation were included. A control, born alive and without any apparent congenital malformations at birth, was selected for each case in the same maternity service in which the case was born. Information on occupational exposures, lifestyle habits, reproductive history, use of medicines, supplementation with multivitamins and folic acid, was obtained by a general questionnair…
Hematinic de?ciencies in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis : variations by gender and age
2017
Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between hematinic deficiencies and recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). Material and Methods 517 RAS patients and 187 healthy controls were enrolled in the present study. Hematinic deficiencies, including serum ferritin, folic acid, and vitamin B12 deficiencies were assessed for each participant. Gender and age were taken into account and the collected data were statistically analysed. Results Compared with the healthy controls, a significantly higher overall frequency of hematinic deficiencies was found in RAS patients (p<0.001). When gender and age were taken into account, significant differences in hematinic deficiencies we…
Association of C677T polymorphism in MTHFR gene, high homocysteine and low HDL cholesterol plasma values in heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemi…
2010
Aim: to investigate the association of C677T polymorphism in the methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene, homocysteine plasma values (Hcy), and plasma HDL cholesterol in heterozy-gous familial hypercholesterolemia (hFH).Methods: One hundred and twenty-five hFH subjects were studied. Plasma lipid, lipoprotein, vitamin B12, folic acid and Hcy values were determined. C677T polymorphism in the MTHFR gene was detected by SSCP-PCR. Genetic diagnosis of FH was determined by a three-step protocol using SSCP-PCR, Southern blot, long PCR and automatic sequencing. Results: We found significant differences in plasma HDL-C (CC 1.39±0.34, CT 1.33±0.39 and TT 1.14±0.26 mmol/L, p=0.028) between th…
