Cognition in Interaction : Challenges in Assessing Persons with Sensory and Multiple disabilities

This article reports a qualitative study of cognitive assessments of three teenagers with sensory and multiple disabilities, including moderate to profound developmental disability. The aim was to evaluate the possibilities for adapting standardized tests and the implementation of interactional partnership in assessment. Cognitive assessments were made with an individually-adapted psychological assessment tool, the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development. Hauki on erittäin yleinen kala Suomessa ja tärkeä saaliskala kalastajille. Haukipopulaatioissa tavataan suurta kokovaihtelua emokalojen välillä, ja mm. kalastuksensäätelyn näkökulmasta olisi hyödyllistä tuntea erikokoisten emojen merkitys populaatioiden lisääntymiskyvylle. Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin emohaukien koon vaikutusta mädin ja poikasten laatuun. Tarkoitusta varten pyydystettiin yhteensä 26 emo- ja 12 koirashaukea kolmesta pienestä eteläsuomalaisesta metsäjärvestä. Naaraat olivat 22,3-94,5 cm:n ja koiraat 40,0-45,0 cm:n pituisia. Knee arthroplasty until age 60 : role of sports and other injuries

BACKROUND: The primary aim of the study was to investigate how total knee arthroplasty (TKA) patients with underlying injuries differ in injury type and physical activity after the arthroplasty. METHODS: A questionnaire was sent to TKA patients, < 60 years at surgery, and knee injury as the cause of knee OA. The final study group consisted of 70 patients. RESULTS: Average age of patients at TKA was 51.8 years (Standard Deviation [SD] 5.2), and at follow-up 57.6 years (SD 6.5). Of the injuries, 26% were sports-related, 29% had occurred at work, 23% in traffic accidents, and 13% during leisure-time (no sports-related). The activity area-based curriculum model (AACM) is used in the Finnish basic education to support pupils—most of whom have profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD)—who could benefit more from skills that advance independent life coping. Existing studies have concentrated mainly on the Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal-setting process for pupils with milder disabilities than PIMD and have consistently demonstrated significant barriers in the process.
