Improved contrast for myeloma focal lesions with T2-weighted Dixon images compared to T1-weighted images
2019
International audience; Purpose: The purpose of this study was twofold. First, to compare the contrast between spinal multiple myeloma (MM) focal lesions and surrounding bone marrow obtained on T2-weighted Dixon fat-only MR images to that obtained on T1-weighted spin-echo images. Second, to search for correlation between bone marrow fat fraction assessed by T2-weighted Dixon sequence and International Myeloma Working Group myeloma defining events.Materials and methods: A total of 39 patients with 112 focal MM lesions were included. There were 25 men and 14 women with a mean age of 68.8±9.8 [SD] years (range: 49-88 years). Contrast between focal MM lesions and surrounding bone marrow was cal…
Matrical carcinoma with prominent melanocytic hyperplasia (malignant melanocytic matricoma?) A report of two cases.
2003
Melanocytic matricoma is a recently described lesion characterized by well-circumscribed nodules composed of matrical and supramatrical cells with clustered ghost cells, and admixed pigmented dendritic melanocytes, with no cyst formation or connection to the epidermis or pre-existing hair follicles. Although variable cytologic atypia and frequent mitoses in the epithelial component may be present, given the well-defined margins and absence of tumor recurrences, these lesions were initially considered benign neoplasms, and not matrical carcinoma. Theoretically, the detection of numerous melanocytes in matrical carcinoma should not be surprising, but is in fact a very unusual feature. A case …
The effect of dopamine on the overflow of endogenous noradrenaline from the perfused rabbit heart evoked by sympathetic nerve stimulation.
1978
1. The effects of dopamine and two dopamine receptor antagonists (pimozide, flupenthixol) on the release of endogenous noradrenaline evoked by electrical stimulation of the postganglionic sympathetic nerves and their influence on cardiac performance were measured in isolated perfused rabbit hearts. 2. Dopamine 0.2μM decreased noradrenaline overflow and ventricular tension development in response to nerve stimulation. 3. Dopamine 2μM increased spontaneous noradrenaline output and tension development. The noradrenaline overflow in response to nerve stimulation was greatly enhanced. This action was only partly reversed by wash out of exogenous dopamine, indicating de novo synthesis and facilit…
Tick-borne bacteria in Ixodes ricinus collected in southern Norway evaluated by a commercial kit and established real-time PCR protocols
2015
Ticks are important vectors of human pathogens. The knowledge of disease causing agents harboured by ticks in Norway is limited. The focus of this study was (a) to detect the bacteria of medical importance in ticks collected from the vegetation at locations in the southern part of the country and (b) to evaluate a novel commercially available multiplex PCR based method by comparing results with conventional established real-time PCR protocols. Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato was confirmed to be the most prevalent pathogen detected (31%) among one hundred individually analysed adult ticks. Borrelia miyamotoi, a spirochete associated with relapsing fever, was detected in one sample. Anaplasma…
Perfluoroalkyl substances in the Ebro and Guadalquivir river basins (Spain).
2015
Mediterranean rivers are characteristically irregular with changes in flow and located in high population density areas. This affects the concentration of pollutants in the aquatic environments. In this study, the occurrence and sources of 21 perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) were determined in water, sediment and biota of the Ebro and Guadalquivir river basins (Spain). In water samples, of 21 analytes screened, 11 were found in Ebro and 9 in Guadalquivir. In both basins, the most frequents were PFBA, PFPeA and PFOA. Maximum concentration was detected for PFBA, up to 251.3ngL-1 in Ebro and 742.9ngL-1 in Guadalquivir. Regarding the sediments, 8 PFASs were detected in the samples from Ebro an…
Replicating phages in the epidermal mucosa of the eel (Anguilla anguilla)
2015
In this work, we used the eel (Anguilla anguilla) as an animal model to test the hypothesis of Barr et al. (2013a,b) about the putative role of the epidermal mucosa as a phage enrichment layer. To this end, we analyzed the microbial content of the skin mucus of wild and farmed eels by using a metagenomic approach. We found a great abundance of replicating phage genomes (concatemers) in all the samples. They were assembled in four complete genomes of three Myovirus and one Podovirus. We also found evidences that ΦKZ and Podovirus phages could be part of the resident microbiota associated to the eel mucosal surface and persist on them over the time. Moreover, the viral abundance estimated by …
Prevalence and genotypes of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato infection in Ixodes ricinus ticks in southern Norway.
2010
From April to October 2007, host-seeking Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected from 4 locations in southern Norway: Farsund, Mandal, Sogne and Tromoy. Two hundred and ten larvae, 1130 nymphs and 449 adults were investigated for infection with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of the 16S rRNA gene. The total percentage of B. burgdorferi s.l. in nymphal and adult ticks was determined to be 31.3% in Farsund, 25.2% in Mandal, 22.3% in Sogne and 22.1% in Tromoy. Larvae were pooled in groups of 10 before analysis, and Borrelia infection was detected in 1 of the 21 larvae pools. B. burgdorferi s.l. were genotyped by melting curve analys…
Vectors of tick-borne diseases and epidemiological situation in Latvia in 1993-2002.
2004
During the period of 1993-2002 an increase and the remarkable changes in the incidence of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and Lyme borreliosis (LB) as well as annual activities of vector species were noticed. The highest increase of TBE morbidity in Latvia has been observed in 1994 and 1995, and less expressed also in 1998 which was followed by a significant decrease during subsequent years. Whereas the highest peak of LB morbidity has been noticed in 1998 with only a minor decrease during subsequent years. Two epidemiologically significant Ixodes tick species are common in Latvia. Ixodes ricinus L. spread in the western and central part of Latvia; but rarely and in small numbers also in the …
Israeli Spotted FeverRickettsiain SicilianRhipicephalus sanguineusTicks
2003
To the Editor: Mediterranean spotted fever (MSF) is endemic in Italy, where it is a reportable disease. From 1992 to 1998, the Italian Ministry of Health was notified of approximately 8,500 cases of human rickettsioses presumed to be MSF. MSF occurs more commonly in some central (Lazio) and southern (Sardinia, Sicily, and Calabria) regions (1,2); in 1998, an average of 8.8 cases occurred for every 100,000 persons in Sicily, compared with the national average of 1.6 cases per 100,000 persons. Rickettsia conorii has been thought to be the only pathogenic Rickettsia of the spotted fever group in Sicily (3,4) or the western Mediterranean area. Recently, three different spotted fever group ricke…
Identification of Three Clinically Relevant Borrelia burgdorferi Sensu Lato Genospecies by PCR-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism Analysis of 1…
2004
ABSTRACT We report the results of a study of the prevalences of three clinically relevant Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato genospecies ( Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto, Borrelia afzelii , and Borrelia garinii ) in 1,040 questing Ixodes ticks from all regions of Latvia, where Lyme borreliosis is endemic. The prevalences of Borrelia in Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes persulcatus were 22.6 and 27.9%, respectively. Molecular typing of B. burgdorferi from infected ticks was performed by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of PCR-amplified fragments of the 16S-23S ( rrs-rrlA ) rRNA intergenic spacer by using species-specific primers and subsequent sequencing. The dominant Borrel…
