Nuovi markers sierologici in corso di Malattia Infiammatoria Cronica Intestinale [New serological markers in IBD diagnosis]

2011

IBD diagnosis, in spite of clinically suspected form, lies on upper and lower endoscopy. Nevertheless endoscopic investigation is an invasive diagnostic tool especially in pediatric age. For this reason pediatricians are looking for mini invasive diagnostic algorithm in order to avoid unnecessary endoscopy. Up to date, while fecal calprotectin is a well established and confirmed intestinal inflammatory marker, on the other hand, new perspectives are opening on serological markers helpful in suspected diagnosis of IBD

Nutrition in inflammatory bowel disease patients

2015

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) is a chronic disorder characterized bya relapsing-remitting course, which alternates between active and quiescent states, ultimately impairing a patient's quality of life. The two main types of IBD are Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). CD shows a transmural granulomatous inflammation that can involve any segment of the intestine affecting all layers of the intestinal wall while UC is limited to the mucosa and superficial sub-mucosa of the colon. In physiologial conditions the gut is costantly exposed to various antigens, commensal microflora and pathogens and the inflammatory response is finely balanced. Anyhow in some individuals with genet…

MESENCHIMAL STEM CELLS IN INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASES: CLINICAL EVIDENCES AND POTENTIAL INSIGHTS FOR THE CLINICIANS

2013

Mesenchimal stem cells (MSCs) have been used experimentally and clinically in the treatment of a wide variety of pathologies MSCs can be safely transplanted in autologous and allogenic ways as they are non-immunogenic, and consequently represent a therapeutic option for refractory connective tissue diseases, fibrosing diseases like scleroderma and fistulizing colitis like in Crohn's disease (CD). The immunomodulatory properties of MSCs have already shown promise when used as therapy for otherwise medically refractory CD. Accumulating evidence suggests that the properties may also be exploited of several other conditions. The currently available experimental and clinical data indicate that, …

NUTRITION IN IBD PATIENT'S: WHAT ARE THE PROSPECTS?

2015

Summary: Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a chronic disorder characterized by a relapsing-remitting course, which alternates between active and quiescent states, ultimately impairing a patients quality of life. The two main types of IBD are Crohn's disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC). In physiological conditions the gut is costantly exposed to various antigens, commensal microflora and pathogens and the inflammatory response is finely balanced. It is thought that a vast number of environmental risk factors may be implicated in the development of IBD, including smoking factors, dietary factors, psycological stress, use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and oral contraceptives,…

The sicilian network for inflammatory bowel disease (SN-IBD): preliminary data on efficacy of biological therapy.

2017

Introduction: The monitoring of appropriateness, costs, and clinical outcomes of biological therapy in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a relevant need. Aims & Methods: We aimed to evaluate all these issues in Sicily through a webbased network of all prescribing centers. The Sicilian Network for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (SN-IBD) is composed by a super Hub coordinator centre and five Hub plus ten Spoke centres. From January 2013, all IBD patients starting a biological agent (incident cases) or already on treatment (prevalent cases) were entered in a web based software. Herein we report data of incident cases about the efficacy of biological therapy after twelve weeks and one year of…

Orthopaedic experience on inflammatory bowel disease (Lesniowski-Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis)

2010

Inflammatory Bowel Diseasae (IBD)is a group of inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract. The major types of IBD are Lesniowski-Crohn's disease (L-CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). IBD sometimes presents with arthritic manifestations. The peripheral arthitis is a problem for the orthopaedist and the physiatrist. The Authors retrospectively reviewed 65 sicilian patients with IBD (38 with UC, 27 with L-CD) over a period of 5 years. All patients underwent clinical examinations, laboratory and imaging studies, and were screened for the presence of the rheumatoid factor. All patients also attended eight to ten 50-minutes sessions of physioterapy over a six-week period. REsults: 38 pat…

COLON MICROBIAL COMPOSITION IS CORRELATED WITH THE SEVERITY OF COLITIS INDUCED BY 2,4,6-TRINITROBENZESULFONIC ACID IN MICE.

2016

The objective of this study was to evaluate the changes in some bacterial species of colonic microbiota, the clinical signs and the intestinal changes in mice with 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS) induced colitis. CD-1 male mice were randomly divided into three groups and inoculated intrarectally with saline ethanol or TNBS solutions. ethanol and TNBS treatments induced weight loss accompained by mild and severe inflammation of the colon mucosa, respectively. however, TNBS-treated mice displayed significant differences compared to the saline group in terms of disease activity index and histological scoring. Both ethanol and TNBS groups showed an increased prevalence of escherichia …

HEAT SHOCK PROTEINS AND ULCERATIVE COLITIS: THE START OF A NEW ERA?

2015

We read with great interest the article written by Abou El Azm and coworkers, published in the last issue of the Arab Journal of Gastroenterology [1]. In this article, the authors investigated the molecular expression of heat shock proteins (HSP) 70 and 90 in relation to the grades of inflammation and dysplasia in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) before and after treatment. In this study, in agreement with other published studies [2–4], the authors not only found a potential role for HSP 70 and HSP 90 for assessment of the activity and prognosis of UC, but also such markers predicted the presence of dysplasia and differentiated it from reactive atypia [1]. HSP had been found not only a…

STRESS, CHAPERONI MOLECOLARI E MALATTIE INFIAMMATORIE CRONICHE DELL'INTESTINO

2011

This brief article is focused on HSP60, a very important molecular chaperon for cell surviving, involved in the pathogenesis of several degenerative, autoimmune, and neoplastic disorders. Recent reports confer unravelling role in IBD pathogenesis. involvement of HSP60 in CD and UC development has been recently confirmed. in fact HSP60 levels increase in mucosal epithelium and also in lamina propria of affected subjects.
