Tellurites fibers for infrared supercontinuum sources : opto-geometric profiles and extrinsic absorptions management

This PhD thesis work focuses on the synthesis and purification of vitreous materials used for the development of waveguides with varied profiles, dedicated to supercontinuum (SC) generation between 1 and 5 μm.Concerning the purification of tellurite glasses, several leads were followed, but best results are obtained for the purification of the TeO2-ZnO-Na2O glassy system by the means of zinc fluoride. Attenuation measurements performed on several meter-long single-index fiber samples reveal the nearly complete elimination of water-related absorptions between 3 and 4 μm (OH ions concentration lower than 1 ppm mass.). The work reported in this thesis deals with the fabrication of suspended core tellurite microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) for supercontinuum generation beyond 2 µm. In order to reach our aim, we first studied thermal and optical properties of TeO2-ZnO-R2O and TeO2-WO3-R2O (where R = Li, Na and K) glasses. The glass 80TeO2-10ZnO-10Na2O (molar %) has been chosen in order to make MOFs for characterization of the generated non linear optical effects. Synthesis performed under dry and oxidative atmosphere allowed us to reduce the hydroxyl groups concentration by a factor of 30 compared to fabrication in air atmosphere. Polarization Modulation Instability in All-Normal Dispersion Microstructured Optical Fibers With Quasi-Continuous Pump

We report the experimental observation of the polarization modulation instability (PMI) effect in all-normal dispersion (ANDi) microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) with quasi-continuous pumping. The small unintentional birefringence (~10-5), that any realistic non-polarization maintaining MOF exhibits, contributes to this nonlinear effect. PMI can produce two sidebands whose polarization state is orthogonal to the polarization of the pump. In this work, only one type of PMI process is observed, i.e., when the pump is polarized along the slow axis of the fiber and sidebands are generated in the fast axis mode. "Photonic lantern" spectral filters in multi-core fibre

Fiber Bragg gratings are written across all 120 single-mode cores of a multi-core optical Fiber. The Fiber is interfaced to multimode ports by tapering it within a depressed-index glass jacket. The result is a compact multimode "photonic lantern" filter with astrophotonic applications. The tapered structure is also an effective mode scrambler.

Gyrification from constrained cortical expansion

The exterior of the mammalian brain - the cerebral cortex - has a conserved layered structure whose thickness varies little across species. However, selection pressures over evolutionary time scales have led to cortices that have a large surface area to volume ratio in some organisms, with the result that the brain is strongly convoluted into sulci and gyri. Here we show that the gyrification can arise as a nonlinear consequence of a simple mechanical instability driven by tangential expansion of the gray matter constrained by the white matter. Flexible modeling for anatomically-based cardiac conduction system construction.

We present a method to automatically deploy the peripheral section of the cardiac conduction system in ventricles. The method encodes anatomical information thorough rules that ensure that Purkinje network structures generated are realistic and comparable to those observed in ex-vivo studies. The core methodology is based in non-deterministic production rules that are parameterized by means of statistical functions. Input parameters allow the construction of a great diversity of Purkinje structures that could be incorporated in fine element ventricular models to perform electrophysiology simulations. The structure of the dentin, consists of the following elements: the odontoblastic processes, dentinal tubules and their periodontoblastic spaces. The odontoblasts are aligned in a single layer in the periphery of the dental pulp and secrete the organic components of dentin. The vitality of dentin is mediated too by the nerve fibres. The ultrastructure of the trigeminal sensory nerves in dentin, especially in relation to odontoblasts remains to be clarified. We studied the third molars and young premolars. Endocytosis in skeletal muscle fibers.

Defining the organization of endocytic pathway in multinucleated skeletal myofibers is crucial to understand the routing of membrane proteins, such as receptors and glucose transporters, through this system. Here we analyzed the organization of the endocytic trafficking pathways in isolated rat myofibers. We found that sarcolemmal-coated pits and transferrin receptors were concentrated in the I band areas. Fluid phase markers were taken up into vesicles in the same areas along the whole length of the fibers and were then delivered into structures around and between the nuclei.
