More than a pore: How voltage-gated calcium channels act on different levels of neuronal communication regulation.

2021

ABSTRACT Voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs) represent key regulators of the calcium influx through the plasma membrane of excitable cells, like neurons. Activated by the depolarization of the membrane, the opening of VGCCs induces very transient and local changes in the intracellular calcium concentration, known as calcium nanodomains, that in turn trigger calcium-dependent signaling cascades and the release of chemical neurotransmitters. Based on their central importance as concierges of excitation-secretion coupling and therefore neuronal communication, VGCCs have been studied in multiple aspects of neuronal function and malfunction. However, studies on molecular interaction partners …

Modeling Conditional Skewness in Stock Returns

2007

Abstract In this paper, we propose a new GARCH-in-Mean (GARCH-M) model allowing for conditional skewness. The model is based on the so-called z distribution capable of modeling skewness and kurtosis of the size typically encountered in stock return series. The need to allow for skewness can also be readily tested. The model is consistent with the volatility feedback effect in that conditional skewness is dependent on conditional variance. Compared to previously presented GARCH models allowing for conditional skewness, the model is analytically tractable, parsimonious and facilitates straightforward interpretation. Our empirical results indicate the presence of conditional skewness in the mon…

A computational method for studying the relation between alternative splicing and DNA methylation.

2015

Alternative splicing is an important mechanism in eukaryotes that expands the transcriptome and proteome significantly. It plays an important role in a number of biological processes. Understanding its regulation is hence an important challenge. Recently, increasing evidence has been collected that supports an involvement of intragenic DNA methylation in the regulation of alternative splicing. The exact mechanisms of regulation, however, are largely unknown, and speculated to be complex: different methylation profiles might exist, each of which could be associated with a different regulation mechanism. We present a computational technique that is able to determine such stable methylation pa…

Plēsonīgo cenu jēdziens Latvijas konkurences tiesībās

2015

OPTION VALUE CALCULATION AFFECTED COMPONENTS

2021

As the subprime credit crisis has attracted attention to financial derivative instruments, more frequently arises questions about fairvalue calculations. Over the time, different models had been introduced. All of those models take into account factors affectingprices. Mostly, factors used in calculations on the same type of financial instruments are approximately the same. Therefore questionarises, which factor affects price more and which less, with no matter which model would be used for fair value calculations. One offinancial derivative instrument types is options. Options are agreements, which give to option buyer rights to buy or sell underlyingasset. While the seller or writer of op…

Value preserving portfolio strategies and the minimal martingale measure

1998

We consider some relations between the minimal martingale measure and the value preserving martingale measure in a continuous-time securities market. Under the assumption of continuous share prices we show that under a structure condition both these martingale measures exist and indeed coincide. This however does not mean that the corresponding concepts of value preserving portfolio strategies and (local) risk minimisation in the area of option hedging in incomplete markets are identical.

Identifying Portfolio-Based Systematic Risk Factors in Equity Markets

2015

Four new prominent asset pricing factors have recently been proposed. We test whether these factors fulfill necessary conditions for qualifying those as risk factors. We show that the investment and betting-against-beta factors fulfill these conditions. However, the profitability and quality factors do not fulfill these conditions pointing towards non-risk-based explanations.

iGEMS: an integrated model for identification of alternative exon usage events.

2016

Abstract DNA microarrays and RNAseq are complementary methods for studying RNA molecules. Current computational methods to determine alternative exon usage (AEU) using such data require impractical visual inspection and still yield high false-positive rates. Integrated Gene and Exon Model of Splicing (iGEMS) adapts a gene-level residuals model with a gene size adjusted false discovery rate and exon-level analysis to circumvent these limitations. iGEMS was applied to two new DNA microarray datasets, including the high coverage Human Transcriptome Arrays 2.0 and performance was validated using RT-qPCR. First, AEU was studied in adipocytes treated with (n = 9) or without (n = 8) the anti-diabe…

Development of primary early-onset colorectal cancers due to biallelic mutations of the FANCD1/BRCA2 gene

2013

International audience; Fanconi anaemia (FA) is characterized by progressive bone marrow failure, congenital anomalies, and predisposition to malignancy. In a minority of cases, FA results from biallelic FANCD1/BRCA2 mutations that are associated with early-onset leukaemia and solid tumours. Here, we describe the clinical and molecular features of a remarkable family presenting with multiple primary colorectal cancers (CRCs) without detectable mutations in genes involved in the Mendelian predisposition to CRCs. We unexpectedly identified, despite the absence of clinical cardinal features of FA, a biallelic mutation of the FANCD1/BRCA2 corresponding to a frameshift alteration (c.1845_1846del…

X-Linked Dilated Cardiomyopathy.

1995

We report on a family with a severe form of X-linked dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Two brothers, the elder requiring heart transplantation, and a maternal cousin presented elevated creatine kinase levels, increased right ventricular diameters and electrocardiographic abnormalities. All complained of exertional cramping myalgia, but none had muscle weakness or a pathological electromyogram. Muscle biopsies of these individuals revealed a mild myopathic picture with atrophic type I and hypertrophic type II fibers. Immunofluorescence using N- and C-terminal antibodies (dys-2, dys-3) against the dystrophin protein showed preserved, but reduced intensity of staining of the sarcolemmal membranes.…
