Precategoriality and syntax-based parts of speech

2008

Late Archaic Chinese is a precategorial language, i.e., a language whose lexical items are not preclassified in the lexicon for the syntactic functions of N and V. This will be shown on the basis of structural-conceptual criteria as those developed by Croft (2000) and Sasse (1993b) as well as on the basis of methodological criteria as those suggested by Evans & Osada (2005). As is claimed in Construction Grammar (Goldberg 1995, 2005), the meaning of lexical items is derived by integrating their own lexical meaning with the meaning contributed by the construction. The construction analysed in this paper is the argument structure construction. Linking between lexicon and syntax is subject…

2013

ABSTRACT: A reflection on the meaning of the terms «iconography» and «iconology», as defined by the fields of Art History and Archeology, in a strict sense, as disciplines concerned with the description and interpretation of images, respectively. In the everyday use of these terms we can also observe an inappropriate meaning when the object itself to which one of these disciplines is applied is designated as «iconography». Likewise, the term «iconology», in its migration from Art History to areas such as Theology, has come to acquire —in one concrete case analyzed here— a completely inappropriate meaning due to the loss of the correct epistemological orientation. KEY WORDS: Iconography, Ico…

How are words with diacritical vowels represented in the mental lexicon? Evidence from Spanish and German

2021

Recent research has shown that the omission of diacritics in words does not affect the initial contact with the lexical entries, as measured by masked priming. In the present study, we directly examined whether diacritics’ omission slows down lexical access using a single-presentation semantic categorisation task (“is the word an animal name?”). We did so in a language in which diacritics reflect lexical stress but not vowel quality (Spanish; e.g. ratón [mouse] vs. raton; Experiment 1) and in a language in which diacritics reflect vowel quality but not lexical stress (German; e.g. Kröte vs. Krote; Experiment 2). In Spanish, word response times were similar for words with diacritics that wer…

Laurentius Lotus [Lorenzo Lotto]. De Amore

2014

ABSTRACT: In the study presented here of some portraits by Lorenzo Lotto, I have attempted to establish a reading of the image, of the details that the artist offers us in his canvas which, to my way of thinking, orient us towards the semantic meaning of the painting. In this concrete case I deal with the theme of love. This entails, therefore, an in-depth exploration of the story that the artist wishes to consider through his work, with the aim of recording and classifying the image by analyzing both its graphic as well as literary precedents. KEY WORDS: Lorenzo Lotto, Portrait, Love, Allegory, Iconography. RESUMEN: En el estudio presentado aqui sobre algunos retratos de Lorenzo Lotto, se …

Los fundamentos de la visualidad de la Prudencia

2015

ABSTRACT: Prudence, as one of the cardinal virtues, is a theme that has been dealt with by numerous thinkers ever since Antiquity. Its broad treatment with regards to different aspects, such as time, governance, selection or advice, has been the object of many visual representations, which show a great variety of attributes, the foundations of which we find in written sources. KEYWORDS: Prudence, Cardinal Virtues. RESUMEN: La Prudencia, como parte de las virtudes cardinales, ha sido tema a tratar por diferentes pensadores desde la Antiguedad. Las pinturas alegórico-mitológicas del palacio Palmerola de Barcelona y su relación con Cesare Ripa

2019

ABSTRACT: This study unveils the meaning of the allegorical-mythological murals, shaped like false sculptures, which frame the scenes of a historical-familial nature decorating the salon of the Palmerola Palace in Barcelona. They were painted at the end of the XVIIIth century by Pedro Pablo Montaña, whose primary literary source was the Iconologyby Cesare Ripa. Based on this text, the painter builds the visual language, whose fidelity to the source is a paradigmatic example of utilization of this source. My research also results in the correction of previous misinterpretations, thus offering a richer and more comprehensive view of the pictorial ensemble.

EL LÉXICO DEL TURISMO EN EL ESPAÑOL DE ARGENTINA: ESTUDIO DE LAS PRINCIPALES PÁGINAS WEB HOTELERAS

2015
