A sample of the entry of the "Vocabolario-atlante delle pratiche…
In particolare sulle voci carusu (tras…
PPG/ECG Multisite Combo System Based on SiPM Technology
2019
Two versions of a PPG/ECG combined system have been realized and tested. In a first version a multisite system has been equipped by integrating 3 PPG optodes and 3 ECG leads, whereas in another setup a portable version has been carried out. Both versions have been realized by equipping the optical probes with SiPM detectors. SiPM technology is expected to bring relevant advantages in PPG systems and overcome the limitations of physiological information extracted by state of the art PPG, such as poor sensitivity of detectors used for backscattered light detection and motion artifacts seriously affecting the measurements repeatability and pulse waveform stability. This contribution presents t…
Advanced nonlinear signal processing in silicon-based waveguides
2015
This talk presents recent progress in optical signal processing based on compact waveguides fabricated mainly using silicon germanium alloys. Applications include supercontinuum generation, wavelength conversion and signal regeneration.
Three-dimensional dynamic light scattering
1999
Abstract We describe the employment of a novel light-scattering scheme for the decorrelation of multiple scattering in strongly turbid samples. The three-dimensional scheme, which has been proposed already theoretically, shows certain advantages compared with the two-colour apparatus, which is commercially available. We describe our set-up in detail; features are the use of modern semiconductor laser diodes and contemporary single-mode fibre receivers. We show experimentally that the optimal signal-to-noise ratio (or intercept) β opt = 0.20, which is obtainable with our set-up, can be quantitatively calculated from the measured uncertainties in the alignment. In particular, we give a detail…
Formation of silicones mediated by the sponge enzyme silicatein-α
2010
The sponge-restricted enzyme silicatein-α catalyzes in vivo silica formation from monomeric silicon compounds from sea water (i.e. silicic acid) and plays the pivotal role during synthesis of the siliceous sponge spicules. Recombinant silicatein-α, which was cloned from the demosponge Suberites domuncula (phylum Porifera), is shown to catalyze in vitro condensation of alkoxy silanes during a phase transfer reaction at neutral pH and ambient temperature to yield silicones like the straight-chained polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The reported condensation reaction is considered to be the first description of an enzymatically enhanced organometallic condensation reaction.
Preliminary studies on nanocomposite based on high quality Silicon Carbide nanofibers
2012
Nanocomposites are nowadays the most promising new materials due to their unique properties (such as high mechanical strength, chemical and thermal resistance). The nanocomposite matrix is blended with a nanostructured filler. In this study, Silicon Carbide nanofibers (NFSiC) and their bundles were tested as a reinforcement of two epoxy resins: EPIKOTE 828 and EL 20. PAP-4 (33 phr) and P-900 (40 phr) were used as hardeners in the two cases, respectively. Several samples were prepared in the range between 0.1 and 5 % wt for both types of resins and fillers (NFSiC and NFSiC bundles). Mechanical and electrical properties were tested. The fillers were obtained using a new simple, fast, low-cost…
2015
Cements with high slag content are currently studied as possible candidate for nuclear waste containment materials. In this context it is important to know their microstructure and the transport properties (permeability and diffusion) of the gases that are formed by the radiolysis of the water present in this material. According to literature, these properties are strongly impacted by the addition of blast furnace slag. The aim of this work is to correlate the hydration processes of slag blended cements with their transport properties. In the first part of this work, the hydration of the slag blended cements, for which only few results have been reported to date, has been studied. Silicon-2…
