Biological tolerance of different materials in bulk and nanoparticulate form in a rat model: sarcoma development by nanoparticles

In order to study the pathobiological impact of the nanometre-scale of materials, we evaluated the effects of five different materials as nanoparticulate biomaterials in comparison with bulk samples in contact with living tissues. Five groups out of 10 rats were implanted bilaterally for up to 12 months with materials of the same type, namely TiO 2 , SiO 2 , Ni, Co and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), subcutaneously with bulk material on one side of the vertebral column and intramuscularly with nanoparticulate material on the contralateral side. Digital Hydraulic Technology for Linear Actuation:A State of the Art Review

This paper analyses the current state of the art in linear actuation with digital hydraulics. Based on the differences in their aims the paper partitions the area into four actuation concepts – parallel valve solutions, single switching valve solutions, multi-chamber cylinders, and multi-pressure cylinders. The concepts are evaluated based on accuracy and smoothness of motion, switching load, reliability, efficiency and the number of components required.
Bi-Sobolev extensions

We give a full characterization of circle homeomorphisms which admit a homeomorphic extension to the unit disk with finite bi-Sobolev norm. As a special case, a bi-conformal variant of the famous Beurling-Ahlfors extension theorem is obtained. Furthermore we show that the existing extension techniques such as applying either the harmonic or the Beurling-Ahlfors operator work poorly in the degenerated setting. This also gives an affirmative answer to a question of Karafyllia and Ntalampekos.
Analytic capacity and quasiconformal mappings with $W^{1,2}$ Beltrami coefficient

We show that if $\phi$ is a quasiconformal mapping with compactly supported Beltrami coefficient in the Sobolev space $W^{1,2}$, then $\phi$ preserves sets with vanishing analytic capacity. It then follows that a compact set $E$ is removable for bounded analytic functions if and only if it is removable for bounded quasiregular mappings with compactly supported Beltrami coefficient in $W^{1,2}$.

Luminescence properties of III-V multi-junctions solar cells

The recent achievement of multi-junctions solar cells, based on III-V semiconductors, exceeding 43% efficiency, has stimulated a rapid growth of concentration photovoltaic (CPV) technology. The large efficiency of these cells is based on the matching between the semiconductors band gap and the solar spectrum and the capability of working under concentrated illumination, up to ~1000 suns. The research pays, therefore, attention to investigate in detail the mechanisms that affect the conversion efficiency, such as the non radiative losses that increase the cell temperature thus favoring the electron-hole (e-h) recombination. The origin of slow electron recombination processes in dye-sensitized solar cells with alumina barrier coatings

We investigate the effect of a thin alumina coating of nanocrystalline TiO2 films on recombination dynamics of dye-sensitized solar cells. Both coated and uncoated cells were measured by a combination of techniques: transient absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and open-circuit voltage decay. It is found that the alumina barrier reduces the recombination of photoinjected electrons to both dye cations and the oxidized redox couple. Halogen exchange and expulsion: ligand stabilized dihalogen silicon dications

The first ligand stabilized SiCl22+ dications were synthesized using N-methylimidazole as co-ordinating ligand. The compounds SiCl4, SiBr2Cl2, and SiH2Cl2 form six-co-ordinated dicationic compounds of almost octahedral symmetry with similar structures which were investigated by single crystal X-ray analysis and density functional calculations. The structures exhibit particularly short dative Si–N bonds of about 1.90 A. Complexes crystallized from the same solvent are isostructural. A different solvent, though, leads to geometrical variations. Multiple dye binding sites and their exchange in equilibrium in air and solvent filled sensitized titanium oxide nanocavities were identified by 2DIR spectroscopy. Binding geometry and flexibility may influence electron injection efficiency of solar cells.
