The Third Way of Cognitive Science and the Middle Way of Buddhism

2013

Even though cognitive science may not be established as a mature science, being rather a loose affiliation of disciplines which make human cognition a scientific theme, it has already had significant impact in the field of epistemology. Since the late 1970s, research conducted on aspects of cognition ranging from perception to language has laid the groundwork for a fundamental epistemological shift in cognitive science, which bears directly on the Western philosophical dilemma of whether reality is objective (and independent of our cognition) or subjective (and so our mind’s projection). My aim here is to trace some major developments in the history of cognitive science leading to the emerg…

The Phenomenological Movement: A Tradition without Method? Merleau-Ponty and Husserl

2002

Section I tries to analyze the ambivalence of Merleau-Ponty ‘s references to Husserl. On the one hand, they indicate a deconstruction of Husserl ‘s phenomenological method; on the other hand, there are attempts to “save” Husserl. Section II is a critical evaluation ofMerleau-Ponty ‘s account of the development ofHusserl ‘s phenomenology. Section III deals with his rejection of the reduction, the account of eidetic intuition, and intentionality. Section IV is an attempt to characterize the motives behind Merleau-Ponty ‘s disinterest in method.

Between Time and Culture: Anthropology and Historicity in the Study of Ancient Literature

2015

ENGLISH Since several decades the use of an ethno-anthropological approach has met with considerable success among classical scholars. The comparative analysis of ancient and ‘primitive’ cultures and the application of anthropological models to the interpretation of classical texts have stood out as a powerful alternative to traditional philology. This paper reassesses the complex relationship between cultural anthropology and classical studies, highlighting the relevance of historicity and diachronic factors as basic dimensions of both fields. Indeed, classicists referring to ethno-anthropology and its methods have sometimes inclined to see Graeco-Roman antiquity as a stereotypically homog…

Schelling, esotericism and the meaning of life

2019

F.W.J. Schelling argues in his middle period work Philosophical Inquiries into the Nature of Human Freedom that will should be understood as the most fundamental constitutive element of reality. Though it is often downplayed in recent scholarship, Schelling derived his most central ideas for this work more or less directly from the theosophy of Jacob Boehme. I will argue that far from peripheral and antiquated curiosity, Schelling´s esoteric influences constitute the very foundation of his middle period thought. Schelling´s affinity to esotericism enabled him to develop a form of pantheism, which is not tied to the familiar problematic aspects of traditional Christian and post-Christian nar…

The Relativity of Reality

2020

According to conceptual relativism, reality crucially depends on the mind and the language of a person. The world does not present itself as already made or arranged. People have different ways of categorising and conceptualising the world. Because according to conceptual relativism, what exists also depends on conceptual frameworks, it can also be called ontological relativism. We must note that ontological relativism does not mean that the mind creates or generates reality and its objects as a craftsman creates a ceramic object. That would be idealism. Relativism does not deny that the world exists and affects our senses, experiences and knowledge. But despite this, we cannot know how the…
