Localized potentials in electrical impedance tomography

2008

In this work we study localized electric potentials that have an arbitrarily high energy on some given subset of a domain and low energy on another. We show that such potentials exist for general L ∞ -conductivities in almost arbitrarily shaped subregions of a domain, as long as these regions are connected to the boundary and a unique continuation principle is satisfied. From this we deduce a simple, but new, theoretical identifiability result for the famous Calderon problem with partial data. We also show how to con- struct such potentials numerically and use a connection with the factorization method to derive a new non-iterative algorithm for the detection of inclusions in electrical imp…

Identifiability problem for recovering the mortality rate in an age-structured population dynamics model

2014

In this article is studied the identifiability of the age-dependent mortality rate of the Von Foerster–Mc Kendrick model, from the observation of a given age group of the population. In the case where there is no renewal for the population, translated by an additional homogeneous boundary condition to the Von Foerster equation, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on the initial density that ensures the mortality rate identifiability. In the inhomogeneous case, modelled by a non-local boundary condition, we make explicit a sufficient condition for the identifiability property, and give a condition for which the identifiability problem is ill-posed. We illustrate this latter case wit…

On determining unknown functions in differential systems, with an application to biological reactors.

2003

In this paper, we consider general nonlinear systems with observations, containing a (single) unknown function φ . We study the possibility to learn about this unknown function via the observations: if it is possible to determine the [values of the] unknown function from any experiment [on the set of states visited during the experiment], and for any arbitrary input function, on any time interval, we say that the system is “identifiable”. For systems without controls, we give a more or less complete picture of what happens for this identifiability property. This picture is very similar to the picture of the “observation theory” in [7]: Contrarily to the case of the observability property, i…

Estimating finite mixtures of semi-Markov chains: an application to the segmentation of temporal sensory data

2019

Summary In food science, it is of great interest to obtain information about the temporal perception of aliments to create new products, to modify existing products or more generally to understand the mechanisms of perception. Temporal dominance of sensations is a technique to measure temporal perception which consists in choosing sequentially attributes describing a food product over tasting. This work introduces new statistical models based on finite mixtures of semi-Markov chains to describe data collected with the temporal dominance of sensations protocol, allowing different temporal perceptions for a same product within a population. The identifiability of the parameters of such mixtur…
