Summary: Fabry disease is an X-linked glycosphingolipid storage disorder caused by a deficiency of α-galactosidase A. Affected patients experience debilitating neuropathic pain and have premature mortality due to renal failure, cardiovascular disease or cerebrovascular complications. The disease may be X-linked dominant, since most females heterozygous for Fabry disease are affected clinically. Hirsutism in women is often explained on the basis of abnormal peripheral androgen metabolism. To determine whether serum markers of ovarian, adrenal, or peripheral androgen production may be helpful determinants in the treatment of hirsutism and to compare the efficacy of treatment with dexamethasone or spironolactone, 20 hyperandrogenic hirsute patients were treated for up to 2 years. Eleven women who were selected on the basis of sensitivity to dexamethasone were treated with a daily dose of 0.37 mg dexamethasone and had androgen levels suppressed into the normal range. Pētījuma mērķis bija noskaidrot, vai pastāv saistība starp empātiju un sociālo trauksmi jauniešiem. Izvirzītā hipotēze paredzēja, ka sociālās trauksmes rādītāji būs pozitīvi saistīti ar afektīvās empātijas rādītājiem. Pētījuma izlasi veidoja 101 dalībnieks, no kuriem 71 bija sieviete (70,3%) un 30 bija vīrieši (29,7%) vecuma grupā no 18 līdz 25. Pētījumā tika izmantotas divas aptaujas – Empātijas skala (Basic Empathy Scale (BES), Jolliffe, Farrington, 2006) un Sociālās trauksmes aptauja (SIAS Social Interaction Anxiety Scale, Mattick & Clarke, 1989). This article discusses the ways in which the polar bear evokes viewer affect in the series through two discourses. The first one relates to violence, essentially present in crime narratives, and how the human and nonhuman animal are positioned in relation to global warming, violence and each other. This article focuses on Foucault’s and Agamben’s readings of Augustine’s account of human nature and original sin. Foucault’s analysis of Augustine’s account of sexual acts in paradise, subordinated to will and devoid of lust, highlights the way it constitutes the model for the married couple, whose sexual acts are only acceptable if diverted by the will away from desire and towards the tasks of procreation.
