Nutraceuticals and blood pressure control: A European Society of Hypertension position document
2020
: High-normal blood pressure (BP) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, however the cost-benefit ratio of the use of antihypertensive treatment in these patients is not yet clear. Some dietary components and natural products seems to be able to significantly lower BP without significant side effects. The aim of this position document is to highlight which of these products have the most clinically significant antihypertensive action and wheter they could be suggested to patients with high-normal BP. Among foods, beetroot juice has the most covincing evidence of antihypertensive effect. Antioxidant-rich beverages (teas, coffee) could be considered. Among nutrients, …
Should reduction of increased short‐term blood pressure variability be a target of antihypertensive therapy?
2021
Abstract It has long been known that blood pressure (BP) is characterized by marked short‐term fluctuations occurring within a 24‐h period and also by long‐term oscillations occurring over more prolonged periods of time. An increased short‐term blood pressure variability (BPV) appears to importantly contribute to target organ damage and to the enhanced cardiovascular risk of hypertensive patients, over and above the effect of an increase in mean BP levels. Reducing 24‐h mean BP is the main aim of antihypertensive therapy, but initial data are available that additional cardiovascular protection can be achieved by reducing BPV. However, to definitively prove the prognostic role of short‐term …
The transcriptional programme of contact-inhibition.
2010
Proliferation of non-transformed cells is regulated by cell-cell contacts, which are referred to as contact-inhibition. Vice versa, transformed cells are characterised by a loss of contact-inhibition. Despite its generally accepted importance for cell-cycle control, little is known about the intracellular signalling pathways involved in contact-inhibition. Unravelling the molecular mechanisms of contact-inhibition and its loss during tumourigenesis will be an important step towards the identification of novel target genes in tumour diagnosis and treatment. To better understand the underlying molecular mechanisms we identified the transcriptional programme of contact-inhibition in NIH3T3 fib…
Unraveling the pleomorphic forms of Borrelia burgdorferi
2014
Borrelia burgdorferi bakteeri on puutiaisten välittämän borrelioosin taudinaiheuttaja. Tämä tavanomaisesti spirokeettana esiintyvä bakteeri kykenee vaihtamaan muotoaan ympäristöolosuhteiden muuttuessa epäsuotuisiksi. Borrelia-bakteerin eri esiintymismuotojen uskotaan olevan borrelioosin pitkittyneen taudinkuvan takana, minkä vuoksi näiden muotojen tutkiminen on tärkeää.
Incidence and clinical importance of perioperative histamine release: randomised study of volume loading and antihistamines after induction of anaest…
1994
Although histamine release is recognised as a common event during anaesthesia and surgery, few clinicians judge the resultant cardiorespiratory disturbances serious enough to warrant prophylaxis with antihistamines. We have assessed the incidence and importance of histamine release in a randomised 2 x 2 factorial study. 240 patients representing a routine throughput of major general surgery were studied during a standardised induction of anaesthesia and preoperative loading of the circulation with either Ringer solution or Haemaccel-35, with or without antihistamine prophylaxis with dimetindene (H1) plus cimetidine (H2). Cardiorespiratory disturbances were graded as detectable, clinically r…
Subharmonic and homoclinic bifurcations in the driven and damped sine-Gordon system
1999
Abstract Chaotic responses induced by an applied biharmonic driven signal on the sine-Gordon (sG) system influenced by a constant dc-driven and the damping fields are investigated using a collective coordinate approach for the motion of the breather in the system. For this biharmonic signal, one term has a large amplitude at low frequency. Thus, the classical Melnikov method does not apply to such a system; however, we use the modified version of the Melnikov method to homoclinic bifurcations of the perturbed sG system. Additionally resonant breathers are studied using the modified subharmonic Melnikov theory. This dynamic behavior is illustrated by some numerical computations.
Evidence for long-lived, optically generated quenchers of excitons in single-walled carbon nanotubes.
2011
The nonlinear dependence of near-infrared photoluminescence (PL) emission on excitation intensity has been measured for individual nanotubes representing six different (n,m) species. Significant deviations from linearity are observed for intensities as low as ~100 W/cm(2), and an approximate inverse correlation is found between nonlinearity and PL action cross section (brightness). A model in which all PL nonlinearity arises from exciton-exciton annihilation is insufficient to account for the experimental data using realistic parameters. It is proposed that additional nonlinear quenching arises from photoinduced quenching states or species with longer lifetimes than emissive excitons. Evide…
