Investigating drug absorption from the colon: Single-pass vs. Doluisio approaches to in-situ rat large-intestinal perfusion
2017
Traditionally, the colon is considered a secondary intestinal segment in the drug absorption process. However, in many cases the role of colonic drug permeability cannot be overlooked. The purpose of this research was to compare colon permeability data obtained using two different rat perfusion methods the single-pass intestinal perfusion (SPIP) approach and the closed-loop (Doluisio) perfusion model. A list of 14 structurally diverse model drugs was constructed, and their rat colon permeability was studied using the two methods. The two sets of results were compared to each other, and were evaluated vs. in-vitro, ex-vivo, and in-vivo literature values. The SPIP and the Doluisio results exh…
Enhancement of self-sustaining reaction Cu3Si phase formation starting from mechanically activated powders
2000
Mechanical high-energy ball milling of an 3Cu Si elemental powders mixture was used to activate a self-sustaining combustion reaction or so-called self-sustaining high-temperature synthesis (SHS) to form the copper silicide phase, a reaction for which the thermodynamic criterion proposed by Munir for self-propagation reaction is not favorable. A complete characterization of the end-products was performed with X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Thermal and structural information describing the combustion front initiated by heating up a sample to 180°C in a Cu:Si system is communicated. This paper clearly shows that the mechanically activated self-sustaining high-tem…
Bioinspired Fabrication of Bio-Silica-Based Bone-Substitution Materials
2010
The gold standard for bone reconstruction is the use of autogeneic grafts from various donor regions, since they possess osteoinductive as well as osteoconductive potential. Only a few synthetic materials possess/display properties that allow optimal bone reconstitution. Previously, we showed that the natural product, bio-silica, comprises osteoinductive, and probably also osteoconductive activity. Bio-silica is formed enzymatically via silicatein; this enzyme has been isolated from siliceous sponges and has also been cloned and prepared recombinantly. In the present study, silicatein was encapsulated together with its substrate, sodium metasilicate, in poly(D,L-lactide)/poly(vinyl pyrrolid…

Ohmic contacts on n-type and p-type cubic silicon carbide (3C-SiC) grown on silicon
2019
This paper is a report on Ohmic contacts on n-type and p-type type cubic silicon carbide (3C-SiC) layers grown on silicon substrates. In particular, the morphological, electrical and structural properties of annealed Ni and Ti/Al/Ni contacts has been studied employing several characterization techniques. Ni films annealed at 950 degrees C form Ohmic contacts on moderately n-type doped 3C-SiC (N-D similar to 1 x 10(17) cm(-3)), with a specific contact resistance of 3.7 x 10(-3) Omega cm(2). The main phase formed upon annealing in this contact was nickel silicide (Ni2Si), with randomly dispersed carbon in the reacted layer. In the case of a p-type 3C-SiC with a high doping level (N-A similar …
One-step formation of nanostructures on silicon surfaces using pure hydrogen-radical-initiated reactions
2013
One-step formation of silicon nanowires, sheets, and texture surface on a silicon substrate has been achieved using hydrogen-radical etching reactions. Metallic tungsten and for comparison purposes a tungsten hot wire, were used as catalysts for the hydrogen-molecular cracking. It was shown that a variety of surface structures on silicon such as inverted pyramid texture, V-groove texture, dense silicon nanowire growth over texture, and nanosheet structure can be obtained by controlling the process conditions. The obtained results suggested that the formation of nanotungsten silicide particle is an essential prerequisite to obtain these structures. The particles work as an etching mask again…
Improving the material quality of silicon ingots by aluminum gettering during crystal growth
2016
We present a method for the purification of silicon ingots during the crystallization process that reduces significantly the width of the low charge carrier lifetime region at the ingot top. The back-diffusion of impurities from the ingot top is suppressed by adding a small amount of pure aluminum into the silicon melt right at the end of the solidification. We study the aluminum gettering effect by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) and Fei imaging. Furthermore, we present a model for aluminum gettering of Fe in the silicon ingot that is in agreement with literature data for aluminum gettering at lower temperature. The distribution of iron in the ingots with and without alumin…
Methods for Enhancing the Thermal Durability of High-Temperature Thermoelectric Materials
2013
Author's version of an article in the journal: Journal of Electronic Materials. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11664-013-2917-0 Thermoelectric materials, for example skutterudites and magnesium silicides, are being investigated as promising materials for medium-to-high-temperature waste heat recovery in transport and in industry. A crucial aspect of the success of a thermoelectric material is its stability over time when exposed to rapid heating and cooling. In this work different aspects of the degradation of these thermoelectric materials at high temperature were examined. Initial thermal durability was studied, and several candidate coatings were evaluat…
A test on Ellenberg indicator values in the Mediterranean evergreen woods (Quercetea ilicis)
2015
The consistency and reliability of Ellenberg’s indicator values (Eiv) as ecological descriptors of the Mediterranean evergreen vegetation ascribed to the phytosociological class Quercetea ilicis have been checked on a set of 859 phytosociological releves × 699 species. Diagnostic species were identified through a Twinspan analysis and their Eiv analyzed and related to the following independent variables: (1) annual mean temperatures, (2) annual rainfall. The results provided interesting insights to disentangle the current syntaxonomical framework at the alliance level demonstrating the usefulness of ecological indicator values to test the efficiency and predictivity of the phytosociological…
Overview of the Opportunity Mars Exploration Rover Mission to Meridiani Planum: Eagle Crater to Purgatory Ripple
2006
The Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity touched down at Meridiani Planum in January 2004 and since then has been conducting observations with the Athena science payload. The rover has traversed more than 5 km, carrying out the first outcrop-scale investigation of sedimentary rocks on Mars. The rocks of Meridiani Planum are sandstones formed by eolian and aqueous reworking of sand grains that are composed of mixed fine-grained siliciclastics and sulfates. The siliciclastic fraction was produced by chemical alteration of a precursor basalt. The sulfates are dominantly Mg-sulfates and also include Ca-sulfates and jarosite. The stratigraphic section observed to date is dominated by eolian bedfor…
