Innovations in the Art of Microneurosurgery for Reaching Deep-Seated Cerebral Lesions.

2019

Deep-seated cerebral lesions have fascinated and frustrated countless surgical innovators since the dawn of the microneurosurgical era. To determine the optimal approach, the microneurosurgeon must take into account the characteristics and location of the pathological lesion as well as the operator's range of technical expertise. Increasingly, microneurosurgeons must select between multiple operative corridors that can provide access to the surgical target. Innovative trajectories have emerged for many indications that provide more flexible operative angles and superior exposure but result in longer working distances and more technically demanding maneuvers. In this article, we highlight 4 …

A curved Lowsley retractor improves manoeuvrability of the prostate during ascending radical retropubic prostatectomy

2007

Worldwide, radical retropubic prostatectomy is the commonest surgical procedure for treating localized prostate cancer. The technique has evolved continuously over the years, yielding improved continence and potency while reducing considerably the associated complications. Simple surgical ‘tricks’ have been proposed for crucial steps, e.g. the control of the dorsal venous complex, atraumatic dissection of the neurovascular bundles (NVBs), improved visualization of the urethral stump and tailoring of the vesicourethral anastomosis [1,2].

Anatomy online: presentation of a detailed WWW atlas of human gross anatomy--reference for medical education.

2002

We present an online anatomy atlas based on the Visible Human Project (VHP) of the US National Library of Medicine. The objective is to provide original unlabeled as well as labeled sections of the human body of high quality and resolution on the Internet, for use in basic and continuing medical education. For a representative overview of the body, 370 axial sections were selected from the male and female data base of the VHP with special regard to regions of clinical interest. Each section is accompanied by its corresponding computer tomography (CT) image and, if available, magnetic resonance images (MRI) for quick and easy comparison of morphologic and radiologic structures. The sections …

Endoscope-assisted Brain Surgery: Part 1—Evolution, Basic Concept, and Current Technique

1998

Rationale The evolution of neurosurgical techniques indicates the effort to reduce surgery-related traumatization of patients. The reduction of traumatization contributes to better postoperative outcomes. The improvement of diagnostic imaging techniques facilitates not only the precise localization of lesions but also the accurate determination of topographical relations of specific lesions to individual anatomic variations of intracranial structures. This precision of diagnostic imaging should be used to perform individual surgical procedures through so-called keyhole approaches. Keyhole craniotomies are afflicted with a reduction of light intensity in the depth of the operating field, and…

Matt Kish’s “Every Page of Moby-Dick, Illustrated”: A Multimodal Approach

2016

Abstract The purpose of this essay is to address the multimodal nature of Matt Kish’s project Every Page of Moby-Dick, Illustrated, where Herman Melville’s 1851 masterpiece is set as paratext. Particular focus is set on the portrayals of Captain Achab, specifically “Page 153”, “Page 465” and “Page 469”. The basic theoretical framework has been offered by Alice Gibbons’ theorization of multimodal cognitive poetics and Sigrid Norris’ systematization of multimodal (inter)action. Useful insight has been lent by Sharon Cameron’s work on allegories of the body in Melville’s writing. The given analysis aims to pinpoint the elements of innovation in Kish’s work with respect to the canonical formal …
