A topological phase transition between small-worlds and fractal scaling in urban railway transportation networks?

2009

Abstract Fractal and small-worlds scaling laws are applied to study the growth of urban railway transportation networks using total length and total population as observational parameters. In spite of the variety of populations and urban structures, the variation of the total length of the railway network with the total population of conurbations follows similar patterns for large and middle metropolis. Diachronous analysis of data for urban transportation networks suggests that there is second-order phase transition from small-worlds behaviour to fractal scaling during their early stages of development.

A framework for defining a sustainability rating system for railway track-beds

2017

Railways perform a significant role in the transportation system and they have relevant environmental, economic and social impacts. They are currently engineered optimizing every singular aspect rather than considering a broader system for improving the sustainability of the overall infrastructure. Thus, it is necessary to promote an effort to define a global sustainability framework for conceiving the design, construction and management of railway infrastructure. The Sustainable Rating System (SRS) proposed in this paper is a tool under development that evaluates different alternatives of railway track-bed structure. Inspired by similar efforts in the field of road engineering such as Gree…

The role of extrinsic and intrinsic factors on departure decisions of a long-distance migratory passerine

2013

[EN] Factors determining departure decisions of migrants from a stopover site can be extrinsic and/or intrinsic but the relative role of each of these factors on departure decisions is still poorly known. Date and wind should be the main factors determining departure decisions in a long-distance migrant, which is expected to minimise duration of migration. Date was considered as an intrinsic factor and wind as an extrinsic one. We analysed the capture-recapture data of a long-distance migrant European songbird, the sedge warbler Acrocephalus schoenobaenus, from a stopover site in northern Iberia during the autumn migration period to quantify the relative importance of several factors on emig…

Overview of the JET results in support to ITER

2017

The 2014–2016 JET results are reviewed in the light of their significance for optimising the ITER research plan for the active and non-active operation. More than 60 h of plasma operation with ITER first wall materials successfully took place since its installation in 2011. New multi-machine scaling of the type I-ELM divertor energy flux density to ITER is supported by first principle modelling. ITER relevant disruption experiments and first principle modelling are reported with a set of three disruption mitigation valves mimicking the ITER setup. Insights of the L–H power threshold in Deuterium and Hydrogen are given, stressing the importance of the magnetic configurations and the recent m…

CHARACTERIZATION OF RUBBERIZED ASPHALT FOR RAILWAYS

2018

Rubberized asphalt mixtures are regarded as a solution for improving the strength of the rail-track section. The recycled rubber has become an enhancer of the modified bituminous mixtures. In this work, it has been shown as a sustainable improvement option in HMA mixes due to the elastic behavior exposed by the rubber particles. The impact of thermal susceptibility on the mechanical properties of the railway bituminous sub-ballast layer has served to the advanced measurement of the thermal cycles inside the rail track. Different simulations following the Kentrack and Kenpave software were employed to be effective with the best mix-design for railways. According to weather situation, reviewe…

Robustness in railway transportation scheduling

2008

Railway scheduling has been a significant issue in the railway industry. Over the last few years, numerous approaches and tools have been developed to compute railway scheduling. However, robust solutions are necessary to absorb short disruptions. In this paper, we present the robustness problem from the point of view of railway operators and we give some guidelines to measure robustness in timetabling. We have developed some formulae to compare robustness between two timetables based on the study of railway infrastructure topology and buffer times. Thus, each buffer time is pondered by some factors such as tightest tracks, number of subsequent trains, remaining stations, etc. This method i…

In the rail sector, France needs to do more to connect its regional networks to the European network

2023

In an article for "Le Monde" newspaper, the legal expert Martial Pernet notes that, despite the texts in force, which he urges to be applied, efforts must be made to achieve the unification of the European rail network.

Transportation noise and risk of stroke: a nationwide prospective cohort study covering Denmark

2021

AbstractBackgroundStudies on transportation noise and incident stroke are few and inconclusive. We aimed to investigate associations between road-traffic and railway noise and the risk of incident stroke in the entire Danish population.MethodsWe estimated road-traffic and railway noise (Lden) at the most and least exposed façades for all residential addresses across Denmark (2.8 million) for the period 1990–2017. Based on this, we estimated the 10-year time-weighted mean noise exposure for 3.6 million Danes aged >35 years, of whom 184 523 developed incident stroke during follow-up from 2000 to 2017. Analyses were conducted using Cox proportional-hazards models, with adjustment for va…

Control of spontaneous spiral formation in a zwitterionic micellar medium

2011

The transition from planar fronts, trigger waves or solitary pulses to spirals in excitable media, has attracted increasing interest in the past few decades, mainly because of its relevance for biological and medical applications. In this paper we describe a new and convenient method for spiral generation starting from symmetric wavefronts. By using the micelle-forming zwitterionic surfactant N-tetradecyl- N,N-dimethylamine oxide in a Belousov–Zhabotinsky solution, it is possible to control to a large extent the domains where spirals can be spontaneously generated. The mechanism responsible for the wavefront break up lies in the interaction of the propagating waves with the unexcitable regi…
