Recent Nordic research in mathematics education illustrated by examples from NORMA17

2021

A characterization of recent Nordic research in didactics of mathematics is presented based on the 32 research reports from the Nordic and Baltic countries in the proceedings from NORMA17 (The eighth Nordic conference on didactics of mathematics). Recent Nordic research in didactics of mathematics is observed from several aspects such as choice of problem, theory, method, result, and target for the message. The analyses of the papers on different levels and from a manifold of perspectives build up an image of what Nordic research in DM (didactics of mathematics) contains and represents currently. The closeness and cooperation between researchers in the Nordic countries is characteristic as …

Analysis of the Past Lifetime in a Replacement Model through Stochastic Comparisons and Differential Entropy

2020

A suitable replacement model for random lifetimes is extended to the context of past lifetimes. At a fixed time u an item is planned to be replaced by another one having the same age but a different lifetime distribution. We investigate the past lifetime of this system, given that at a larger time t the system is found to be failed. Subsequently, we perform some stochastic comparisons between the random lifetimes of the single items and the doubly truncated random variable that describes the system lifetime. Moreover, we consider the relative ratio of improvement evaluated at x &isin

Two-Color Radiation Generated in a Seeded Free-Electron Laser with Two Electron Beams.

2015

We present the experimental evidence of the generation of coherent and statistically stable two-color free-electron laser radiation obtained by seeding an electron beam double peaked in energy with a laser pulse single spiked in frequency. The radiation presents two neat spectral lines, with time delay, frequency separation, and relative intensity that can be accurately controlled. The analysis of the emitted radiation shows a temporal coherence and a shot-to-shot regularity in frequency significantly enhanced with respect to the self-amplified spontaneous emission. © 2015 American Physical Society. © 2015 American Physical Society.

Split Bregman Method for Gravitational Wave Denoising

2014

This paper presents a progress report in our aim to develop a Total Variation algorithm for denoising of gravitational waves. These algorithms, are routinely employed in the context of image processing and they do not need any a priori information on the signals. We apply our method to two different types of numerically-simulated gravitational wave signals, namely burst produced from the core collapse of rotating stars and waveforms from binary black hole mergers, and present a preliminary assessment of its capabilities.

Adaptive interpolation with maximum order close to discontinuities

2022

Abstract Adaptive rational interpolation has been designed in the context of image processing as a new nonlinear technique that avoids the Gibbs phenomenon when we approximate a discontinuous function. In this work, we present a generalization to this method giving explicit expressions for all the weights for any order of the algorithm. It has a similar behavior to weighted essentially non oscillatory (WENO) technique but the design of the weights in this case is more simple. Also, we propose a new way to construct them obtaining the maximum order near the discontinuities. Some experiments are performed to demonstrate our results and to compare them with standard methods.

Nonlocal discrete ∞-Poisson and Hamilton Jacobi equations

2015

In this paper we propose an adaptation of the ∞-Poisson equation on weighted graphs, and propose a finer expression of the ∞-Laplace operator with gradient terms on weighted graphs, by making the link with the biased version of the tug-of-war game. By using this formulation, we propose a hybrid ∞-Poisson Hamilton-Jacobi equation, and we show the link between this version of the ∞-Poisson equation and the adaptation of the eikonal equation on weighted graphs. Our motivation is to use this extension to compute distances on any discrete data that can be represented as a weighted graph. Through experiments and illustrations, we show that this formulation can be used in the resolution of many ap…

On the Parameterization of Cartesian Genetic Programming

2020

In this work, we present a detailed analysis of Cartesian Genetic Programming (CGP) parametrization of the selection scheme ($\mu+\lambda$), and the levels back parameter l. We also investigate CGP’s mutation operator by decomposing it into a self-recombination, node function mutation, and inactive gene randomization operators. We perform experiments in the Boolean and symbolic regression domains with which we contribute to the knowledge about efficient parametrization of two essential parameters of CGP and the mutation operator.

A Semantic Web Approach for Geodata Discovery

2013

International audience; Currently, vast amounts of geospatial information are o ffered through OGC's services. However this information has limited formal semantics. The most common method to search for a dataset consists in matching keywords to metadata elements. By adding semantics to available descriptions we could use modern inference and reasoning mechanisms currently available in the SemanticWeb. In this paper we present a novel architecture currently in development in which we use state of the art triplestores as the backend of a CSW service. In our approach, each metadata record is considered an instance of a given class in a domain ontology. Our architecture also adds a spatial dat…

Use of Geospatial Analyses for Semantic Reasoning

2010

International audience; This work focuses on the integration of the spatial analyses for semantic reasoning in order to compute new axioms of an existing OWL ontology. To make it concrete, we have defined Spatial Built-ins, an extension of existing Built-ins of the SWRL rule language. It permits to run deductive rules with the help of a translation rule engine. Thus, the Spatial SWRL rules are translated to standard SWRL rules. Once the spatial functions of the Spatial SWRL rules are computed with the help of a spatial database system, the resulting translated rules are computed with a reasoning engine such as Racer, Jess or Pellet.

A Predictive Model for Automatic Detection of Social Isolation in Older Adults

2017

Social isolation is a problem that is accentuated in the stage of old age. This condition puts at risk the physical and mental integrity of older adults. This paper presents a predictive model for the automatic detection of social isolation in older adults. The predictive model was implemented in a mobile application that monitors communication and mobility activities performed by an older adult. The system also considers demographic aspects to improve the prediction results. The mobile application was also generated for a caregiver who is responsible for receiving notifications about the specific level of social isolation of the older adult. The predictive model was evaluated using an expe…
