Estimation of orientation characteristic of fibrous material

A new statistical method for estimating the orientation distribution of fibres in a fibre process is suggested where the process is observed in the form of a degraded digital greyscale image. The method is based on line transect sampling of the image in a few fixed directions. A well-known method based on stereology is available if the intersections between the transects and fibres can be counted. We extend this to the case where, instead of the intersection points, only scaled variograms of grey levels along the transects are observed. Classification trees for multivariate ordinal response: an application to Student Evaluation Teaching

Data from multiple items on an ordinal scale are commonly collected when qualitative variables, such as feelings, attitudes and many other behavioral and health-related variables are observed. In this paper we introduce a method to derive a distance-based tree for multivariate ordinal response that allows, when subject-specific characteristics are available, to derive common profiles for respondents giving the same/similar multivariate ratings. Special attention will be paid to the performance comparison in terms of AUC, for three different distances used as splitting criteria. Microscopic theory for hopping transport in glass-forming liquids: mode coupling corrections

Abstract By introducing an order parameter that describes the geometry of clusters of particles, Liu and Oppenheim [Physica A 247 (1997) 183] developed a microscopic theory for hopping transport in glass-forming liquids. In this work we bring this theory within the frame of mode coupling theories in the highly viscous regime. We calculate corrections to the effective longitudinal viscosity that affect its long-time dynamical behavior. Nevertheless, the relation between the longitudinal viscosity and the hopping kernel is not qualitatively altered by mode coupling.

Entropic measure of spatial disorder for systems of finite-sized objects

We consider the relative configurational entropy per cell S_Delta as a measure of the degree of spatial disorder for systems of finite-sized objects. It is highly sensitive to deviations from the most spatially ordered reference configuration of the objects. When applied to a given binary image it provides the quantitatively correct results in comparison to its point object version. Stochastic labelling of biological images

Many hypotheses made by experimental researchers can be formulated as a stochastic labelling of a given image. Some stochastic labelling methods for random closed sets are proposed in this paper. Molchanov (I. Molchanov, 1984, Theor. Probability and Math. Statist.29, 113–119) provided the probabilistic background for this problem. However, there is a lack of specific labelling models. SUMMARY A common method of studying biogeographical ranges is an atlas survey, in which the research area is divided into a square grid and the data consist of the squares where observations occur. Often the observations form only an incomplete map of the true range, and a method is required to decide whether the blank squares indicate true absence or merely a lack of study there. Is there a cost at encoding words with joined letters during visual word recognition?

Abstract For simplicity, models of visual-word recognition have focused on printed words composed of separated letters, thus overlooking the processing of cursive words. Manso de Zuniga, Humphreys, and Evett (1991) claimed that there is an early “cursive normalization” encoding stage when processing written words with joined letters. To test this claim, we conducted a lexical decision experiment in which words were presented either with separated or joined letters. Many image processing tasks need some kind of average of different shapes. Frequently, different shapes obtained from several images have to be summarized. If these shapes can be considered as different realizations of a given random compact set, then the natural summaries are the different mean sets proposed in the literature. A new method for linear affine self-calibration of stationary zooming stereo cameras

This paper presents a simple, yet effective, method to recover the affine structure of a scene from a (stereo) pair of stationary zooming cameras. The proposed method solely relies on point correspondences across images and no knowledge about the scene whatsoever is required. Our method exploits implicit properties of the projective camera matrices of zooming cameras and allows to estimate the affine structure of a scene by solving a linear system of equations. The 3D reconstruction results obtained by using our method, on both real and simulated data, have remarkably validated its feasibility.
