Digital Technologies for virtual recomposition. The case study of Serpotta stuccoes.
2014
The matter that lies beneath the smooth and shining surface of stuccoes of the Serpotta family, who used to work in Sicily from 1670 to 1730, has been thoroughly studied in previous papers, disclosing the deep, even if empirical, knowledge of materials science that guided the artists in creating their masterworks. In this work the attention is focused on the solid perspective and on the scenographic sculpture by Giacomo Serpotta, who is acknowledged as the leading exponent of the School. The study deals with some particular works of the artist, the so-called “teatrini” (Toy Theater), made by him for the San Lorenzo Oratory in Palermo. On the basis of archive documents and previous analogica…
Accuracy of Computer-Aided Dynamic Navigation Compared to Computer-Aided Static Procedure for Endodontic Access Cavities: An In Vitro Study
2020
: Purpose: To analyze the accuracy of two computer-aided navigation techniques to guide the performance of endodontic access cavities compared with the conventional access procedure. Materials and Methods: A total of 30 single-rooted anterior teeth were selected, which were randomly distributed into three study groups: Group A&mdash
In praise of artifice reloaded: Caution with natural image databases in modeling vision
2019
Subjective image quality databases are a major source of raw data on how the visual system works in naturalistic environments. These databases describe the sensitivity of many observers to a wide range of distortions of different nature and intensity seen on top of a variety of natural images. Data of this kind seems to open a number of possibilities for the vision scientist to check the models in realistic scenarios. However, while these natural databases are great benchmarks for models developed in some other way (e.g., by using the well-controlled artificial stimuli of traditional psychophysics), they should be carefully used when trying to fit vision models. Given the high dimensionalit…
Determinant Factors in Purchasing Korean Skin Care Products
2020
The demand and business opportunities in the skin and facial beauty sector have increased in the last 10 yr. The beauty and personal care industry in Indonesia grows on average of 12 %, with a market value of 33 × 109. This research emphasizes the presence of the influence of attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control on the purchase intention of skincare products that are moderated by the country of origin. The data collection is conducted by distributing questionnaires to a total of 130 respondents. Data obtained through a questionnaire are then processed with Smart Partial Least Square (PLS). The results in this study prove that the attitude and perceived behavioral cont…
A deep semantic segmentation-based algorithm to segment crops and weeds in agronomic color images
2022
Abstract In precision agriculture, the accurate segmentation of crops and weeds in agronomic images has always been the center of attention. Many methods have been proposed but still the clean and sharp segmentation of crops and weeds is a challenging issue for the images with a high presence of weeds. This work proposes a segmentation method based on the combination of semantic segmentation and K-means algorithms for the segmentation of crops and weeds in color images. Agronomic images of two different databases were used for the segmentation algorithms. Using the thresholding technique, everything except plants was removed from the images. Afterward, semantic segmentation was applied usin…
18F-FDG PET imaging of breast cancer : evaluation of the metabolic behaviour of the different breast cancer subtypes and prediction of the tumor resp…
2015
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) with 18Fluoro-deoxyglucose (18F-FDG) is the reference imaging examination for in-vivo quantification of the glucidic metabolism of tumour cells. It allows for the monitoring of tumour metabolic changes during chemotherapy. Breast cancer comprises several distinct genomic entities with different biological characteristics and clinical behaviours, leading to different tailored treatments. The aim of this doctoral thesis was to evaluate the relationship between the different biological entities of breast cancer and the tumour metabolic behaviour during neoadjuvant chemotherapy. We have also retrieved, among the various metabolic parameters on PET images, the …
Supernatural Elements in kipling's 'The Mark on the Beast', Conan Doyle's 'Lot no 249' and Wells' 'The Truth About Peycraft': The Gothic Short Story …
2013
The aim of the essay is the analysis of the supernatural elements in Kipling’s ‘The Mark on The Beast”, Conan Doyle’s “Lot no. 409”, Wells’ “The Truth about Peycraft” conceived of as the expression of the revitalisation of the Gothic imagery which, through the Short Story, serve to voice and exorcise late Victorian crisis, de-Constructing late Victorian identity. First, the complex nature of late Victorian Britain crisis will be deepened; second, the short story will be focused on as an independent genre from the novel which mostly epitomized Fin de Siècle literary fantastic discourse; finally, the short stories will be investigated as textual examples of what Brantlinger defines as Imperia…

Editorial – Preface to the Special Issue on Numerical Techniques Meet with OR
2021
Abstract This special issue of the Foundations of Computing and Decision Sciences, titled ”Numerical Techniques Meet with OR”, is devoted to the numerical techniques and their applications in real-world phenomena. The special issue and its editorial present numerical algorithms as they meet with different research topics such as, e.g., from operational research, supply chain management, geometrical structures and Covid-19 effects on financial applications. Besides, the special issue covers instructional information about numerical techniques which are useful for OR research problems and real-world applications on such issues.
An affordable contactless security system access for restricted area
2016
International audience; We present in this paper a security system based on identity verification process and a low-cost smart camera , intended to avoid unauthorized access to restricted area. The Le2i laboratory has a longstanding experience in smart cameras implementation and design [1], for example in the case of real-time classical face detection [2] or human fall detection [3]. The principle of the system, fully thought and designed in our laboratory, is as follows: the allowed user presents a RFID card to the reader based on Odalid system [4]. The card ID, time and date of authorized access are checked using connection to an online server. In the same time, multi-modality identity ve…
