Intraspecific Differences in Spectral Reflectance Curves as Indicators of Reduced Vitality in High-Arctic Plants

2017

Remote sensing is a suitable candidate for monitoring rapid changes in Polar regions, offering high-resolution spectral, spatial and radiometric data. This paper focuses on the spectral properties of dominant plant species acquired during the first week of August 2015. Twenty-eight plots were selected, which could easily be identified in the field as well as on RapidEye satellite imagery. Spectral measurements of individual species were acquired, and heavy metal contamination stress factors were measured contemporaneously. As a result, a unique spectral library of dominant plant species, heavy metal concentrations and damage ratios were achieved with an indication that species-specific chan…

Study of behavioral and neurophysiological mechanisms following motor imagery training

2017

For many years, research in motor control, sport science and rehabilitation focused on the performance improvement following mental practice. However, some mechanisms, behavioral and neurophysiological, remain insufficiently understood. In our first study, we demonstrated the impossibility to predict the future performance improvement following imagined repetitions of a speed accuracy trade-off task, with a subjective evaluation of imagery ability of young healthy individuals. However, it is essential to produce clear and vivid mental simulations throughout the training to obtain a better performance improvement. Besides, by a further analysis of performance, the results of our second study…

Cosa “significa” una metafora? Davidson e le Teorie Neodavidsoniane sulla metafora

2022

In this paper I will discuss Davidson's theory of metaphor and the neodavidsonian theories of metaphor. I will show points of force and points of weakness of this kind of account of metaphor and I will propose a synthetic perspective on metaphor that brings together "imagistic theories of metaphor" with "cognitive theories of metaphor".

The role of mental imagery in depression : negative mental imagery induces strong implicit and explicit affect in depression

2015

Mental imagery, seeing with the mind's eyes, can induce stronger positive as well as negative affect compared to verbal processing. Given this emotion-amplifying effect, it appears likely that mental images play an important role in affective disorders. According to the subcomponents model of depression, depressed mood is maintained by both negative imagery (which amplifies negative mood) and less efficient positive imagery processes. Empirical research on the link between mental imagery and affect in clinical depression, however, is still sparse. This study aimed at testing the role of mental imagery in depression, using a modified version of the affect misattribution procedure (AMP) and t…

Optimizing self-organizing timbre maps: Two approaches

1997

The effect of using different auditory images and distance metrics on the final configuration of a self-organized timbre map is examined by comparing distance matrices obtained from simulations with a similarity rating matrix, obtained using the same set of stimuli as in the simulations. Two approaches are described. In the static approach, each stimulus is represented as a single multi-component vector. Gradient images, which are intended to represent idealizations of physiological gradient maps in the auditory pathway, are constructed. The optimal auditory image and distance metric, with respect to the similarity rating data, are searched using the gradient method. In the dynamic approach…

Assessment of Classifiers and Remote Sensing Features of Hyperspectral Imagery and Stereo-Photogrammetric Point Clouds for Recognition of Tree Specie…

2018

Recognition of tree species and geospatial information on tree species composition is essential for forest management. In this study, tree species recognition was examined using hyperspectral imagery from visible to near-infrared (VNIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) camera sensors in combination with a 3D photogrammetric canopy surface model based on RGB camera stereo-imagery. An arboretum with a diverse selection of 26 tree species from 14 genera was used as a test area. Aerial hyperspectral imagery and high spatial resolution photogrammetric color imagery were acquired from the test area using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) borne sensors. Hyperspectral imagery was processed to calibrated …

Digital orthophotos at a scale of 1:5000 from high resolution satellite images

2004

This paper describes the first results of a study, carried out within the national research program “Cofin2001”, on the potential use of high resolution satellite images for making digital orthophotos at a scale of 1:5000 and 1:10,000. Particularly, images from IKONOS II and QuickBird of four different types of areas were employed: the first area is the city of Palermo, a greatly urbanized area; the second area is the extra-urban territory near the town of Contessa Entellina in south-western Sicily; the third area is the famous tourist resort of Scopello, in the western Sicily; the last area is the Caselle Airport, a flat zone near Torino. The first three images were orthorectified by using…

Effects of hydrological events on morphological evolution of a fluvial system

2018

Abstract This study quantifies morphological evolution of the Dez River, Iran, from 1955 to 2016. The approach uses a sequence of Landsat images, aerial photos, and topographic maps. In addition, the hydrological data including average daily discharge and yearly maximum discharge at the Dezful hydrological station for the period (1955–2016) were used. The study reach was divided into 48 meander loops from upstream to downstream. Active channel width (w) was determined at 10 m intervals and changes assessed along the study reach of the Dez River. Morphological indices including sinuosity index; straight meander length; centerline flow length; erosion area; erodible length channel migration; …

Study of a plasma generated in metal surface treatment by laser ablation in air : characterisations of induced radiation and nanoparticules

2015

The interaction of a laser beam of short pulse duration with metallic materials such as aluminum, iron or titanium is characterized by the presence of a high energy and strongly ionized plume (plasma). The aim of this study is to understand the mechanisms involved in plasma, created when laser-target interaction, which lead to the formation of nanoparticles. We would generally consider the dynamic expansion in the air of the plasma plume formed with a nanosecond Nd:YAG laser to specify the conditions of formation of these particles and their morphological and structural characteristics. Thus, this work is divided onto two parts. In the first part, we present the experimental characterizatio…
