Oral health survey of the child population in the Valencia Region of Spain (2004)

2006

Recognition and Civic Selection

2021

Large-scale immigration and the refugee crisis have caused many states to adapt ever stricter civic selection processes. This paper discusses the challenges arising from civic selection from the perspective of recognition theories. The argument is that recognition theories provide good conceptual tools with which to critically analyze civic selection and immigration. However, the paper also aims to highlight that many current institutional practices are problematic from the perspective of recognition. In the context of civic selection, it is helpful to understand recognition as something that comes in two analytically distinct modes: horizontal (or interpersonal) and vertical (or institutio…

The good, the bad and the ugly: images of the foreigner in contemporary criminal law

2018

Since the end of the Second World War, the criminal law of Western states has tried to legitimate itself, in basically democratic-republican terms, as primarily addressed towards citizens. During approximately the last 20 years, however, new dimensions of criminal law have emerged, which refer paradigmatically (not to the citizen, but) to the foreigner and subject him/her to worse legal treatment than that which is considered legitimate when either citizens or ‘good’ foreigners are concerned. Next to the ideal-type of the citizen criminal law (also applicable, by assimilation, to the ‘good’ foreigner) a criminal law for ‘ugly’ mass-foreigners (crimmigration) and one for ‘bad’ foreigners (en…

Il «gelo metallico dello Stato»: per una critica della crimmigration come nuda forza

2019

After outlining certain features of the phenomenon of «crimmigration» (the intertwining of criminal law and migration law), this paper notes two main issues. First, the fact that the condition of social exclusion in which crimmigration places the unwanted migrant — a condition that, being pro- dromic to the foreigner’s expulsion, should in principle be temporary — becomes stable in the many cases in which expulsion does not occur; as a result, large portions of the population that de facto fall within the State’s jurisdiction suffer long-term discrimination — in conflict with various consti- tutional principles, not least those enshrined in Articles 2 and 3 of the Constitution. Second, crim…

L'espulsione dello straniero tra apparenza e realtà.

2021

"pene mascherate", in …

The Industrial City: The Multi-Ethnic Frontier of the Twentieth Century

2004

Between 1890 and 1920, big American industrial cities represented the frontier for the more than 23 million immigrants from southern and eastern Europe, Asia, and Central America, as well as for the African-Americans from the South. The development of mass consumption industries and the interventionism of the federal government provided security at the workplace and a general improvement in living standards for blue collar workers. The local party machines, the industrial unions and the effects of the First World War fully integrated the new immigrants into politics. Mass culture and entertainment made Americanization easier and, together with organised crime, were a quick way of social asc…

Prawicowy ekstremizm jako zagrożenie dla demokratycznych standardów w Niemczech

2020

Right-wing extremism in Germany is hardly a new phenomenon, but it has been changing in recent years. Right-wing extremists are becoming morę aggressive and the number of violent crimes they commit is increasing. Right-wing extremists are predominantly against immigration to Germany and Islamization. They are demanding substantial changes in the asylum law and glorifying German national values. Formal and informal groups of right-wing extremists take advantage of the fears of Islamie terror- ism, and they support hostility towards immigrants - primarily Muslims. The stronghold of the right-wing extremism is in the Eastern States of the German Federal Republic. In the paper, the Author is ru…
