Objective To study the expression of the chaperone family of J proteins in the synovial tissue of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or osteoarthritis. Methods Rabbit antibodies specific for a synthetic peptide (pHSJ1: EAYEVLSDKHKREIYD), representing the most conserved part of all J domains thus far identified—among them the Drosophila tumor suppressor Tid56—were used in immunohistochemical analyses of frozen sections of synovial tissue and immunoblotting of protein extracts of adherent synovial cells. Intrahepatic lymphocytic aggregates are observed in chronic hepatitis C as well as in autoimmune chronic hepatitis. Autoantibodies and autoimmune manifestations may occur in hepatitis C. It has been suggested that the lymphocytic aggregates play a role in the liver injury of chronic hepatitis C by an immune-mediated mechanism. Immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM) is considered one of the idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, comprising dermatomyositis, polymyositis, and inclusion body myositis. The heterogeneous group of necrotizing myopathies shows a varying amount of necrotic muscle fibers, myophagocytosis, and a sparse inflammatory infiltrate. The underlying immune response in necrotizing myopathy has not yet been addressed in detail. In Italy, systematic mandatory tetanus immunization of children started in 1968. In 1989, immunity against tetanus was assessed in a random sample of 758 healthy subjects aged 3-20 y, from four Italian cities. There were 257 subjects 3-5 y old all residing in Southern Italy and 501 subjects 11-20 y old from both the South and North. The overall prevalence of non-immune subjects was 19.1%, without difference by sex. The rates of subjects lacking protective antibody titres was 25.3% in children 3-5 y old (all coming from South and the islands), 11.5% in those 11 y old, and 18.9% in the 18-20 y age-group, respectively. CD4 T cells play a key role in anticancer immunity. In this study, we investigate the clinical relevance of circulating CD4 T helper type 1 (Th1) response against telomerase (anti-TERT Th1 response) in patients with melanoma. The spontaneous anti-TERT Th1 response was detected in 54.5% (85/156) of patients with melanoma before treatment. The prevalence of this systemic response was inversely related to Breslow thickness >1 mm and American Joint Committee on Cancer stage ≥II (P = 0.001 and 0.032, respectively).
