The impact factor as a measuring tool of the prestige of the journals in research assessment in mathematics

2016

The (2-year) Impact Factor of Thomson-Reuters (IF) has become the fundamental tool for analysing the scientific production of academic researchers in a lot of countries. In this article we show that this index and the ordering criterion obtained by using it are highly unstable in the case of mathematics, to the extent that sometimes no reliability can be assigned to its use. We explain the reasons of this behaviour by the specific properties of the mathematical journals and publications, attending mainly the point of view of the researchers in pure mathematics. Using the Journal Citation Report list of journals as a source of information, we analyse the stability in the position of the math…

Half a century of Anales de Pediatría. Evolution of its main bibliometric indicators in the Web of Science and Scopus international databases

2019

Purpose: To analyze the coverage and main bibliometric indicators of Anales de Pediatría in Scopus and Science Citation Index Expanded of the Web of Science (SCIE) databases. Material and method: The evolution of the journal production was identified according to the document types, collaboration indexes between authors and institutions, and citations, and impact indicators (number of citations, impact factor, 5-years impact factor and without self-citations, Scimago Journal Rank, quartile, h-index and most cited works). Results: A total of 10,128 papers were included in Scopus (a mean of around 225 per year) and 1861 in SCIE (a mean of around 207 per year). The index of collaboration was 4…

In the Eye of the Beholder: How Regulatory Focus and Self-Efficacy Interact in Influencing Opportunity Recognition

2012

Although there is evidence that regulatory focus is associated with opportunity exploitation, there is a lack of research examining its role at the early stages of opportunity recognition. The present study makes two major contributions to address this gap. First, we demonstrate that entrepreneurs' promotion focus is positively related to opportunity recognition, whereas prevention focus is not significantly related to opportunity recognition. Second, integrating two theories of self-regulation – regulatory focus theory and self-efficacy theory – our findings reveal that a high promotion focus compensates for entrepreneurs' low levels of creative and entrepreneurial self-efficacy in opportu…

Editorial issue 2

2018

It has been a very long trip since I wrote my last editorial. The first issue of the Journal received a strong welcome from all over the world in the beginning of 2016, but there was something missing that drove us to a winding road that ended in an even stronger situation: the support of the University of Valencia’s Publication Service (UVPS). The missing thing in the first issue was the DOI (Digital Object Identifier). All the online journals have a DOI to identify the papers and allow a permanent link to them. Each DOI is unique for each paper. We look for a DOI provider in our environment and found the UVPS to offer DOIs for free to their teachers. As I am one of them, I went to ask for…

2018

© 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. The Journal of Psychology: Interdisciplinary and Applied is a leading international journal in psychology dating back to 1935. This study examines its publications since its creation utilizing a bibliometric analysis. The primary objective is to provide a complete overview of the key factors affecting the journal. This analysis includes such key issues as the publication and citation structure of the journal, its most cited articles, and the leading authors, institutions, and countries referenced in the journal. The work uses the Scopus database to classify the bibliographic material. Additionally, the analysis provides a graphical mapping of the bibliogr…

64 The fact that ‘the scandal of poor medical research’ by douglas altman (1994) largely holds true today insinuates the persistent conduct and disse…

2019

The objective of this submission is to describe four additional suggestions to alleviate issues around the quality of research and publications. Currently, positive results are twice as likely to be published as negative results. Advocating the publication of negative findings too would beseech individuals to report true findings and be less tempted to fabricate data. Moreover, negative findings help expedite the process of uncovering positive results and is supported by ‘Missing pieces’ by PLOS ONE and the journal ‘Negative results’. However, their negligible impact factor and low profile may dissuade researchers from exhibiting their work here. It can be challenging for new journals to co…

Public availability of published research data in substance abuse journals

2014

[EN] Sharing research data is an increasingly necessary requirement for the advancement of science. The aim of this study was to analyse the policies on openness in sharing scientific research data in substance abuse journals. Journals included in the Substance abuse area of the Journal Citation Reports were used for the analysis, with reference to the instructions to authors published on the journals websites. In 67.6% of the journals, it is possible to store materials in thematic or institutional repositories; 47% accept supplemental material; 64.7% allow the reuse of data, and 41.2% admit the publication of their data on a website. Most journals recommend that authors deposit their data …
