The Dual Pandemics of COVID-19 and Obesity: Bidirectional Impact

2022

: The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, has been shown to disrupt many organ systems in the human body. Though several medical disorders have been affected by this infection, a few illnesses in addition may also play a role in determining the outcome of COVID-19. Obesity is one such disease which is not only affected by the occurrence of COVID-19 but can also result in a worse clinical outcome of COVID-19 infection. This manuscript summarizes the most recent evidence supporting the bidirectional impact of COVID-19 and obesity. It highlights how the presence of obesity can be detrimental to the outcome of COVID-19 in a given …

Characterizing the Dynamic Taste and Retro-Nasal Aroma Properties of Oral Nutritional Supplements Using Temporal Dominance of Sensation and Temporal …

2020

International audience; Orally Disintegrating Tablets (ODTs) are used to restore the nutritional status of people suffering from swallowing pathologies such as dysphagia. ODTs are consumed without water intake and are easily swallowed. The main active compounds of ODTs are vitamins and minerals. These nutrients can have a bad taste or aftertaste, which can be masked by sweetening or flavoring. To ensure the effectiveness of masking strategies and to prescribe a product to patients with acceptable sensory qualities, it is essential to perform a precise and complete sensory characterization of these ODTs. Temporal dominance of sensations (TDS) and temporal check-allthat- apply (TCATA) methods…

Hypoplastic amelogenesis imperfecta with multiple impacted teeth - report of two cases

2010

Amelogenesis Imperfecta (AI) represents a group of developmental conditions, genomic in origin, which affect the structure and clinical appearance of enamel of all or nearly all the teeth in a more or less equal manner. It is usually inherited either as an X-linked, autosomal dominant or autosomal recessive trait. The enamel may be hypoplastic, hypomineralised or both and affected teeth may be discolored, sensitive or prone to disintegration. Diagnosis is based on the family history, pedigree plotting and meticulous clinical observation. The treatment of patients with AI should start with early diagnosis and intervention to prevent latter restorative problems. Herein, we present two case re…

Four Conceptual Perspectives of Innovation Components

2019

The study provides a detailed analysis of high impact to market innovations, without sorting whether these are innovations of low or high technological progress. The research base sample includes a detailed analysis of 58 consumer product innovations that reached a high market impact over the period 2014–2017, i.e. the consumers purchased them considerably more than other innovations. The study examines the components of these innovations in detail; they are also grouped into 4 basic groups. It is concluded in the study that the high impact to market innovations are made up of recurring 34 components. The study also concludes that the open innovation components only partly overlap with the …

Life Cycle Environmental Assessment of Energy Valorization of the Residual Agro-Food Industry

2021

This study assesses the potential environmental impacts related to the energy valorization of agro-food industry waste thought the Life Cycle Assessment methodology (ISO 14040). The system examined consists of a real anaerobic digester coupled with a combined anaerobic digester and heat and power plant (AD-CHP) operating in Sicily. The analysis accounts for all the impacts occurring from the delivery of the biomass to the AD-CHP plant up to the electricity generation in the CHP. The main outcomes of the study include the eco-profile of the energy system providing electricity and the assessment of the contribution of each life cycle phase aimed at identifying the potential improvement area. …

Estimación del impacto económico de los museos a través de las nuevas tecnologías de la información: el caso del museo Ene.Térmica

2015

It is increasingly necessary to emphasize the potential of culture as an engine for economic development and its ability to generateincome and create jobs. For this reason, this paper evaluates the economic impact of the Ene.térmica museum in the territory in which it is located, Ponferrada (Castilla y León Community, Spain). In order to achieve this aim, the estimation of the different types of effects needed to determine the impact of economic of the activities linked to the existence of Ene.Térmica is calculated by using the tool Impactrimonio, a web-based application that applies the Input-Output Tables methodology. The results show that due to both activities of the museum and demand f…

SIXTH REVIEW OF TESTS PUBLISHED IN SPAIN: RESULTS AND IMPACT OF THE MODEL ON LECTURERS AND PUBLISHERS

2019

The Questionnaire for the Assessment of Tests (CET; Prieto & Muñiz, 2000) and the revised version of this questionnaire (CETR; Hernández et al., 2016) have been applied systematically since 2010 by the Test Commission of the Spanish Psychological Association. The main goal is to provide practitioners with reliable information on the quality of the tests in order to improve test use. The aim of this paper is twofold. First, to present the results of the sixth review of psychological and educational tests, in which a total of 10 tests have been evaluated. Second, to assess the impact that the application of the CET/CET-R has had over these years on two key agents: test publishers and universi…

Inverse Malthusianism and Recycling Economics: The Case of the Textile Industry

2020

The current use of natural resources in the textile industry leads us to introduce a new economic concept called inverse Malthusianism describing a context in which population grows linearly and resource consumption grows exponentially. Inverse Malthusianism implies an exponential increase in environmental impact that recycling may contribute to reduce. Our main goal is to extend the analysis of materials selection under the principle of equimarginality proposed by Jevons. As a first result, we show the particular circumstances under which policies excluding recycled supplies are never optimal. We also aim to overcome the difficulties of reducing environmental aspects to monetary units. To …

The paper analyses the impact that the recent inclusion of the environment in the Italian Constitution may have in the criminal law both with respect to the criminally relevant notion of the environment and with regard to the selection of the types of criminal offences. From this point of view the paper also takes into consideration the penal significance of the new bond of intergenerational ecological solidarity. Following the file rouge of the “bene giuridico” the second part of the essay is instead dedicated to the description of the critical points and the possible developments of international environmental criminal law in the light of a conception of the environment as a common and universal legal good.Settore IUS/17 - Diritto Penale

Effect of Plasma Treatment on Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Marble Powder/Epoxy Composites

2016

The aim of this work was to study the effect of the plasma treatment on the behavior of composite structures reinforced with marble powder, obtained as processing waste in the “Custonaci” basin. Moreover, different filler amounts (i.e. 10%wt, 20%, 30% in weight) were investigated. For the mechanical characterization, tensile and flexural quasi-static tests, Charpy impact test, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) were performed. For the thermal stability, thermogravimetric analysis was carried out. Finally, real density and fraction of voids were measured. It was observed that untreated marble powder, on one hand, increases tensile and flexural stiffness and improves thermal stabi…
