Indicators for assessing the environmental impacts of land use changes across Europe
2008
International audience; Much progress has been made in understanding future trend development over the last years. Governments and international bodies are increasingly attempting to assess ex-ante the impact of their policy proposals. In the SENSOR project, environmental sustainability is assessed by answering a set of policy relevant questions likely to affect goods and services provided by land. The answer is complex and the assessment of future options is very sensitive to scale, how far ahead in time is being considered, and whether the assessment addresses local, regional or global concerns. The relationships between components of land use and the response of environmental indicators …
Molecular studies of diversity of populations of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi
2011
National audience; Arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF) which form a mutualistic symbiosis with most terrestrial plants are not only important for natural ecosystems, but also for agricultural production. The aim of this study is to characterize fungal populations at different geographic scales in order to better understand the processes influencing AMF taxonomic and functional diversity and to determine the environmental factors affecting AMF populations, especially in the context of agricultural management. The mitochondrial large subunit gene of ribosomal RNA will be used as molecular marker to resolve population structure of Rhizophagus irregularis (formerly known as Glomus intraradices). …

Maize-based low-input cropping systems can provide effective weed control while ensuring crop productivity
2016
Conventional Maize Monoculture (MMConv) is now questioned for environmental reasons. During a five-year field experiment, yield and weed pressure of MMConv was compared to three low-input Cropping Systems (CS) : MMLI, a Low-Input Maize Monoculture; MMCT, a Conservation Tillage Maize Monoculture; Maize-MSW, Maize rotated with Soyabean and Wheat, all designed to reduce water pollution. In 2014 and 2015, weed-free zones were established on all CS. Weed biomass was higher in MMCT, especially for spring grasses and perennials. MMConv (11.3±1.1 T ha-1) and MMLI (10.6±2.3 T ha-1) had higher grain yields than MMCT (8.2±1.9 T ha-1). Finally, concerning yields observed in weed-free zones, MMCT yields…

Widespread diminishing anthropogenic effects on calcium in freshwaters
2019
Calcium (Ca) is an essential element for almost all living organisms. Here, we examined global variation and controls of freshwater Ca concentrations, using 440 599 water samples from 43 184 inland water sites in 57 countries. We found that the global median Ca concentration was 4.0 mg L−1 with 20.7% of the water samples showing Ca concentrations ≤ 1.5 mg L−1 , a threshold considered critical for the survival of many Ca-demanding organisms. Spatially, freshwater Ca concentrations were strongly and proportionally linked to carbonate alkalinity, with the highest Ca and carbonate alkalinity in waters with a pH around 8.0 and decreasing in concentrations towards lower pH. However, on a temporal…
Cartographie de la diversité des sols viticoles de versant par imagerie à haute résolution : contribution à la connaissance des terroirs
2014
The Burgundian vineyard hillslopes (Côte-d’Or, France) exhibit a high diversity of soils resulting from the combination of several natural and anthropogenic factors acting at various spatio-temporal scales. The soil types have major role in viticulture, since they partly determine wine-growing quality. However, soil undergoes important degradation caused by hydric erosion and vineyard management practices. To control this soil heritage for a sustained viticulture in Côte-d’Or, a better knowledge of soil is necessary. The objectives of this work is to characterise vineyard soils and to identify the factors governing their diversity using an interdisciplinary approach crossing geology, geomor…
