Short-time non-work-related computing and creative performance

2014

It has been argued that non-work-related computing (NWRC) takes time away from work and, hence, decreases work productivity. On the other hand, it has also been claimed that short-time non-work-related computing (STNWRC) (a maximum of 15 minutes), has a positive impact on work productivity, including relief from boredom, higher creativity, and the underlying recovery mechanisms. To examine the impact of STNWRC on creative performance, we draw on Fredrickson's broaden-and-build theory, the concept of recovery with mental well-being and low cognitive effort. A 2 × 2 factorial experiment with 40 subjects was conducted. The results indicate that STNWRC has a positive effect on creative performa…

Technostress and Social Networking Services: Uncovering Strains and Their Underlying Stressors

2017

Numerous users of social networking sites and services (SNS) suffer from technostress and its various strains that hinder well-being. Despite a growing research interest on technostress, the extant studies have not explained what kinds of various strains can SNS use create and how can these strains be traced back to different stressors. To address this gap in research, we employed a qualitative approach by narrative interviews. As a contribution, our findings introduce four SNS strains (concentration problems, sleep problems, identity problems, and social relation problems) and explain how they link with different underlying SNS stressors. As practical implications, the findings of this stu…

Primary school text comprehension predicts mathematical word problem-solving skills in secondary school

2014

This longitudinal study aimed to investigate the extent to which primary school text comprehension predicts mathematical word problem-solving skills in secondary school among Finnish students. The participants were 224 fourth graders (9–10 years old at the baseline). The children’s text-reading fluency, text comprehension and basic calculation ability were tested in grade four. In grade seven and nine, their skills in solving mathematical word problems were assessed. Overall, the results showed that text comprehension in grade four of primary school predicts math word problem-solving skills in secondary school, after controlling for text-reading fluency and basic calculation ability. Among …

Grapevine fruit set: Physiology of the abscission zone

2000

Effects of ethylene and of 'anti-ethylene' compounds on the floral pedicel abscission zone in grapevines were analysed via a laboratory model consisting of isolated flowers held in Petri dishes. Our model permitted precise determination of abscission and enabled us to test a range of physiologically-active compounds including ethylene precursors, and antagonists of ethylene action. For example, a precursor of ethylene, 1-aminocyclopropane-l-carboxylic acid, had the same effect as ethylene in promoting abscission. Conversely, an inhibition of ethylene action by silver thiosulfate or an inhibition of ethylene synthesis by amino-oxyacetic acid both strongly inhibited abscission zone function. …

Validation of a modified version of the Experiences of Teaching and Learning Questionnaire

2018

Providing teaching-learning environments that foster university studentsö learning is an essential task of higher education. Valid and reliable tools for assessing them are therefore needed. This study investigates the measurement properties of a modified version of the Experiences of Teaching and Learning Questionnaire (ETLQ). Two independent data-sets (N = 1637 and N = 1711) were collected from Finnish university students. Confirmatory factor analyses resulted in a modified measurement model for the ETLQ, consisting of 11 factors. The first three factors assessing the teaching-learning environment – Teaching for Understanding, Disciplinary Understanding and Supportive Teaching – were indi…

A dynamic simulation approach to frame drivers and implications of corruption practices on firm performance

2014

Corruption is a multifaceted socio-economic phenomenon widely spread - although with different intensity - all around the world. Many studies on corruption have been conducted at a country-level, but relatively little effort has been placed in evaluating its implications, in terms of both financial and competitive performance, at a firm-level. Therefore, this paper aims at exploring the causal relationships underlying the effect of corruption on firm performance in order to show the different scenarios that may emerge from the combination between external (i.e., contextual conditions) and internal (i.e., organizational characteristics) forces that drive corruption. To this end, we adopt a D…

The Critical Role of Morale in Ukraine’s Fight against the Russian Invasion

2020

The role of morale, also known as esprit de corps, in a high technology environment of the 21st century warfare, is poorly understood. The purpose of the study is to seek evidence for the proposition that the Ukraine’s population and military forces morale has neutralized the asymmetric difference in the military force of the two countries. The academic and practical implications have the potential to refocus military practice. An exploratory qualitative research method using theoretical sampling was used in this study. The study finds significant evidence for high morale as a balancing factor in the asymmetric differences of Russia and Ukraine, which explains Ukraine’s success against grea…
