Self-consistent continuum solvation (SCCS): the case of charged systems.

The recently developed self-consistent continuum solvation model (SCCS) [O. Andreussi, I. Dabo, and N. Marzari, J. Chem. Phys. 136, 064102 (2012)] is applied here to charged species in aqueous solutions. Describing ions in solution represents a great challenge because of the large electrostatic interactions between the solute and the solvent. The SCCS model is tested over 106 monocharged species, both cations and anions, and we demonstrate its flexibility, notwithstanding its much reduced set of parameters, to describe charged species in solution. Fragment Difficulty in Priming on Word-Completion Tests

Word-fragment completion is a frequently used test in implicit memory research. In this test priming is the relevant variable. Priming is obtained by subtracting the proportion of nonstudied word fragments correctly completed (called “completion difficulty baseline”) from the studied word fragments correctly completed. Since completion difficulty can spuriously vary greatly between experimental conditions, its effect on magnitude of priming is studied. Zero Viscosity Limit for Analytic Solutions, of the Navier-Stokes Equation on a Half-Space.¶I. Existence for Euler and Prandtl Equations

This is the first of two papers on the zero-viscosity limit for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a half-space. In this paper we prove short time existence theorems for the Euler and Prandtl equations with analytic initial data in either two or three spatial dimensions. The main technical tool in this analysis is the abstract Cauchy-Kowalewski theorem. For the Euler equations, the projection method is used in the primitive variables, to which the Cauchy-Kowalewski theorem is directly applicable. For the Prandtl equations, Cauchy-Kowalewski is applicable once the diffusion operator in the vertical direction is inverted.

What can synaesthesia tell us about our minds?

Synaesthesia is considered here as a cognitive phenomenon in the context of developmental, neuropathological and linguistic perspectives. Developmental synaesthesia seems to arise as an effect of interplay between genotype and phenotype, during the implicit learning process in childhood, in those individuals who possess an inborn susceptibility to it. Some connections between synaesthesia and extraordinary experiences, brain restructuration and pain, are examined. Acquired types of synaesthesia may be related to sensory deprivation. This essay deals with the notions of ›simplicity‹ and ›complexity‹ as well as ›accommodation‹ and ›transgression‹ with respect to child developments in language acquisition and literature acquisition. Focusing on the period of ›Early Literacy‹, it is argued that language development and children’s literature both start with simple patterns and gradually gain complexity. It is shown that children’s literature is a specific input in language acquisition which is accommodated to the needs of children. Both in language acquisition and in literary input, one finds also transgressions of rules.
Are we "experienced listeners"? A review of the musical capacities that do not depend on formal musical training.

The present paper reviews a set of studies designed to investigate different aspects of the capacity for processing Western music. This includes perceiving the relationships between a theme and its variations, perceiving musical tensions and relaxations, generating musical expectancies, integrating local structures in large-scale structures, learning new compositional systems and responding to music in an emotional (affective) way. The main focus of these studies was to evaluate the influence of intensive musical training on these capacities. Research into the role of implicit theories in decision-making covers a broad area ranging from personal to political relationships, and from private to professional life. To date, translation studies have paid little attention to the influence of translators’ knowledge and beliefs in the translation process, and even less to the role of implicit theories. In a pilot study with translation trainees, we attempted to reconstruct their theories about translation and discern to what extent these theories influence both the translation process and the translated text. In this experiment, we examined the effect of perspective-taking—actively contemplating others’ psychological experiences—on linguistic intergroup bias. We asked some participants to adopt the perspective of a character (an Italian or a Maghrebian), while others did not receive similar instructions, and complete a short dialogue comprised of a series of vignettes, resulting in a 2 (perspective-taking: presence vs. control) × 2 (group: ingroup vs. outgroup) between-participants design. Working memory span tasks require participants to maintain items in short-term memory while performing some concurrent processing (e.g., reading, counting, and problem solving). It has been suggested that the difficulty of these tasks results either from the necessity of sharing a limited resource pool between processing and storage (Case’s cognitive space hypothesis) or from the fact that the memory traces suffer from a temporal decay while the concurrent task is being performed (Towse and Hitch’s memory decay hypothesis).
