“Ab-initio” structure solution of nano-crystalline minerals and synthetic materials by automated electron tomography
2012
Most of the newly discovered mineral phases, as well as many new synthesized industrial materials, appear only in the form of nano crystals, with a size not sufficient for single-crystal x-ray structure analysis. The development of techniques able to investigate the structure of nano crystalline materials is therefore one of the most important frontiers of crystallography. The most widespread technique providing relatively fast and well consolidated routes for structure analysis of bulk materials is x-ray powder diffraction (XRPD). Nevertheless, XRPD suffers from intrinsic 1-dimension reduction of information that greatly limits its applicability in presence of peak broadening and overlappi…
Characteristics of LiFePO4 obtained through a one step continuous hydrothermal synthesis process working in supercritical water
2009
International audience; The olivine-like material LiFePO4 was prepared via a continuous hydrothermal synthesis process working from subcritical to supercritical water conditions. The influence of some processing parameters–temperature and reaction time–was investigated in terms of material purity, grain size and morphology. Supercritical conditions were found to be attractive to synthesize in one step a well-crystallized material without impurities. The primary particles size was in the nanometric range. They showed a natural tendency to form micron size agglomerates, which were supposed to be the cause of the limited capacity, as demonstrated through a cross study using laser particle size…
Hydrogen and deuterium decoration of In-vacancy complexes in nickel.
1987
The quantum-mechanical states of hydrogen and deuterium in pure and defected nickel have been calculated using the effective-medium theory. The defects considered include monovacancies, the substitutional In impurity, a complex of four vacancies, and a complex of an In impurity decorated with a tetrahedron of four vacancies. While the substitutional In impurity does not trap hydrogen, the vacancy and the vacancy complexes with and without In association do. The calculated binding energy to the four vacancy complex is nearly insensitive to the hydrogen isotopic mass and to the In decoration. These results, along with the dependence of the hydrogen binding energy on multiple hydrogen occupanc…
Effect of surface impurities on downconversion luminescence of Pr3+, Yb3+ activated SrF2 nanoparticles
2020
Abstract Pr3+,Yb3+ activated SrF2 nanoparticles synthesized by low-temperature hydrothermal method were studied. The composition and size of nanoparticles were intentionally changed by controlling synthesis conditions. After structural and morphological characterization, the spectroscopic properties of the nanoparticles were analyzed in the visible and near infrared spectra ranges. The results show correlation between the gradual change of the amount of carboxylate and hydroxyl moieties on the nanoparticle surface, varied by the size nanoparticles and the quenching of the luminescence. The size-related amount of surface quenchers is strongly connected to the decrease of the downconversion e…
Structural and chemical analysis of annealed plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition aluminum nitride films
2016
Plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition was utilized to grow aluminum nitride (AlN) films on Si from trimethylaluminum and N2:H2 plasma at 200 °C. Thermal treatments were then applied on the films which caused changes in their chemical composition and nanostructure. These changes were observed to manifest in the refractive indices and densities of the films. The AlN films were identified to contain light element impurities, namely, H, C, and excess N due to nonideal precursor reactions. Oxygen contamination was also identified in the films. Many of the embedded impurities became volatile in the elevated annealing temperatures. Most notably, high amounts of H were observed to desorb from the…
Structural fluctuations in glass-forming liquids: Mössbauer spectroscopy on iron in glycerol.
1991
M\"ossbauer absorption spectra of $^{57}\mathrm{Fe}^{2+}$ dissolved in a glycerol-water mixture have been measured over a wide temperature range (80--275 K). In the supercooled liquid state the shapes of the spectra depend strongly on temperature. The M\"ossbauer spectra can be fit with jump diffusion with a Cole-Davidson distribution of fluctuation times. The results are in agreement with those obtained from dielectric and ultrasonic volume relaxations, proving that the \ensuremath{\alpha} relaxation of viscous liquids is responsible for the line broadening of the spectra. From the temperature dependence of the integrated area of the M\"ossbauer spectrum a second dynamic process is inferre…
The role of impurities in the irradiation induced densification of amorphous SiO(2).
2011
In a recent work (Buscarino et al 2009 Phys. Rev. B 80 094202), by studying the properties of the (29)Si hyperfine structure of the E'(γ) point defect, we have proposed a model able to describe quantitatively the densification process taking place upon electron irradiation in amorphous SiO(2) (a-SiO(2)). In particular, we have shown that it proceeds heterogeneously, through the nucleation of confined densified regions statistically dispersed into the whole volume of the material. In the present experimental investigation, by using a similar approach on a wider set of materials, we explore how this process is influenced by impurities, such as OH and Cl, typically involved in relevant concent…
Luminescence of rutile structured crystalline silicon dioxide (stishovite)
2014
Abstract Luminescence spectrum of synthetic mono-crystalline stishovite comprises a slow blue band at ~400 nm (~3.1 eV) and a fast UV band at ~260 nm (~4.7 eV), as well as some bands in near-infrared range of spectra. The NIR luminescence of stishovite crystal, excited with lasers 532 nm, 248 nm and 193 nm as well as x-ray, possesses several sharp lines. A zero phonon line is situated at 787 nm (1.57 eV) and grows with cooling. An anti-Stokes line is located at 771 nm (1.68 eV). This line disappears with cooling. In a powder sample of stishovite created by shock waves generated by the impact of a 50-m-diameter meteorite in Arizona 50,000 years ago, the PL broad blue band is situated at 425 …
Peculiarities of photoluminescence of Al2O3 bulk and nanosize powders at low temperatures
2011
Abstract Photoluminescence has been studied in the aluminum oxide (Al2O3) bulk and nanosize powders in the 300–8 K temperature range. In both samples luminescence spectrum is characterized by presence of broad blue and red bands caused mainly by emission from the uncontrolled titanium impurity. At low temperatures luminescence intensity increases by several times and the red band obtains fine structure. The nature of the fine structure is discussed suggesting manifestation of splitting of the Ti3+ emitting level due to Jahn–Teller effect or overlapping of Ti3+ emission band with narrow lines from other emitting ions. The observed differences in low-temperature spectral features of nanopowde…
3d impurities in Al: density functional results
1980
Self-consistent spin density functional calculations have been carried out for 3d transition metal impurities in aluminium. The width of the virtual level decreases as it moves away from the Fermi energy with increasing occupancy. The results are compared with recent XPS measurements.
