The Orogastric Tube Guide® as a novel strategy for gastric tube insertion: a prospective, randomized controlled clinical trial
2020
BACKGROUND Gastric tube insertion, either orally or nasally, is daily practice in anesthesia and intensive care. "Blind" insertion represents the common conventional method and is associated with low first-pass success and frequent complications. This trial aimed to evaluate the novel gastric tube guide as a rigid conduit in regard to insertion success rate, time required and associated complications versus the conventional "blind" insertion method. We hypothesized that the insertion success rate is higher using the Orogastric tube guide. METHODS This trial was approved by ethics committee prior to patient recruitment. In a randomized order, anesthetists performed oral insertion of a gastri…
A stinging wasp in the stomach: accidental endoscopic diagnosis of a systemic anaphylactic reaction.
2015
of a proton pump inhibitor and prokinetic treatment. Because of her medical history, an upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy was performed. We discovered, in the proximalpartof theantrumonthegreater curvature, an intact dead wasp with its sting visible and an underlying slightly swollen red welt in the area of the sting
Similarly increased congenital anomaly rates after intrauterine insemination and IVF technologies: a retrospective cohort study
2012
International audience; BACKGROUND: While intrauterine insemination (IUI), a simple, inexpensive and non-invasive technique, is the most used assisted reproduction technology (ART) worldwide, the risk of major birth defects following IUI is paradoxically not well documented. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study performed in Burgundy, France, over a 9-year period which consisted of the cross analysis of two prospective databases, the Burgundy perinatal network database and the database of the assisted conception units in Burgundy. A total of 1348 ART singletons [in vitro fertilization technologies (IVFT): n= 903; IUI: n= 445] matched with 4044 infants conceived naturally, 552 ART twins (IVFT:…
Intrarectal immunization with rotavirus 2/6 virus-like particles induces an antirotavirus immune response localized in the intestinal mucosa and prot…
2006
ABSTRACTRotavirus (RV) is the main etiological agent of severe gastroenteritis in infants, and vaccination seems the most effective way to control the disease. Recombinant rotavirus-like particles composed of the viral protein 6 (VP6) and VP2 (2/6-VLPs) have been reported to induce protective immunity in mice when administered by the intranasal (i.n.) route. In this study, we show that administration of 2/6-VLPs by the intrarectal (i.r.) route together with either cholera toxin (CT) or a CpG-containing oligodeoxynucleotide as the adjuvant protects adult mice against RV infection. Moreover, when CT is used, RV shedding in animals immunized by the i.r. route is even reduced in comparison with…
Software/Hardware Issues in Modelling Insect Brain Architecture
2011
The concept of cognitive abilities is commonly associated to humans and animals like mammals, birds and others. Nevertheless, in the last years several research groups have intensified the studies on insects that posses a much simpler brain structure even if they are able to show interesting memory and learning capabilities. In this paper a survey on some key results obtained in a joint research activity among Engineers and Neurogeneticians is reported. They were focussed toward the design and implementation of a model of the insect brain inspired by the Drosophila melanogaster. Particular attention was paid to the main neural centers the Mushroom Bodies and the Central Complex. Moreover a …
Vibrio vulnificus: from water to host
2017
Vibrio vulnificus is an aquatic pathogen autochthonous from temperate, tropical and subtropical ecosystems where it lives either as a sessile cell, forming biofilms or as a free-swimming cell. From these locations, the pathogen can occasionally infect humans and fish causing a disease named vibriosis. The most severe form of human and fish vibriosis is associated with the pathogen’s ability to spread from the infection site to the bloodstream and multiply, process known as invasion. Before invasion, the pathogen has to colonize the mucosal host surface, process that involves not only bacterial attachment/adhesion but also resistance to mucosal immunity, commensal microbiota (competitors) an…

Migrazioni ed insediamenti informali: riflessioni sul caso siciliano
2022
Over the last fifty years, many European regions in the Mediterranean area, historically considered as areas of origin of international migration flows, have been transformed into places of reception. At the basis of this mobility is, among many factors, the demand, by a variable and globalised economy, for 'easy' labour, mostly made up of new immigrants, instrumental to that particular local economic system. Analysing the spatial dimension of the phenomenon, it highlights how the inadequacy and insufficiency of reception places and the increase in eviction phenomena contribute to the significant increase in the phenomenon of informal settlements in peripheral urban contexts, making it diff…
