An overestimated relationship? Violent political unrest and tourism foreign direct investment in the Middle East
2010
Although the tourism industry is increasingly globalising, empirical research on the accompanying foreign direct investment (FDI) is surprisingly lacking. Furthermore, the nexus of political risk, violent political unrest and tourism FDI has been relatively neglected. Using Egypt as a heuristic case study and adopting a qualitative methodology, this paper explores the question of how political risk and violent political unrest influence tourism FDI. Surprisingly, the results are not able to corroborate a clear relationship between the two. In contrast, these results indicate that the role of stability and security for tourism FDI in developing countries has largely been overestimated in the…

El Control de las Inversiones Extranjeras Directas (Control of Foreign Direct Investment (Table of Contents))
2018

Foreign Direct Investments and Economic Growth in Central and Eastern Europe: A Panel-Based Analysis
2018
One of the most discussed issues related to foreign direct investments (FDI) refers to the impact they have on the economic and social welfare of a country. Moreover, if these effects are positive, the question is to what extent and by what instruments they can be enhanced by host country governments. In recent decades, the general political opinion on FDI changed, as they are rather understood as generating competitiveness and growth for host countries and less in terms of their negative effects on the economy. Our paper investigates the relationship between FDI flows and economic growth in countries from Central and Eastern Europe that are also EU members using the panel methodology and i…
Mozambique’s Megaproject-Based Economic Model: Still Struggling with Uneven Development?
2019
Megaprojects in aluminium production, coal and natural gas extraction, and hydropower generation play a key role in the Mozambican economy. Based on the concepts of global value chains and linkages, this chapter shows that remarkable transformations are taking place in these sectors, including the expansion of production, the attraction of FDI and the emergence of new players from the Global South who now compete with transnational companies from traditional economic partner countries of Mozambique. The authors highlight potentials (in terms of economic transformation, especially positive side effects through the provision of electricity and rehabilitation of transport infrastructure) as we…
L'apport de la finance d'entreprise comportementale à l'explication de la politique de dividendes
2020
Behavioural corporate finance is an area that has attracted a lot of interest from financial economists, psychologists and neuroscientists over the past decade. This research falls within the scope of behavioural corporate finance, which proves to be an new and promising field of research. The question of dividends, although recurrent, continues to occupy an axiological position in recent research in Finance. Since 2015, France has been considered as one of the most generous countries in terms of dividend distribution in the European Union (EU). At this level, it is a question of research aimed at delimiting the real contours of the determinants of the decision and the amount of the dividen…
Evolution of fitness in experimental populations of vesicular stomatitis virus
1996
Abstract The evolution of fitness in experimental clonal populations of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) has been compared under different genetic (fitness of initial clone) and demographic (population dynamics) regimes. In spite of the high genetic heterogeneity among replicates within experiments, there is a clear effect of population dynamics on the evolution of fitness. Those populations that went through strong periodic bottlenecks showed a decreased fitness in competition experiments with wild type. Conversely, mutant populations that were transferred under the dynamics of continuous population expansions increased their fitness when compared with the same wild type. The magnitude of …
Large scale international replication and meta-analysis study confirms association of the 15q14 locus with myopia. The CREAM consortium.
2012
Myopia is a complex genetic disorder and a common cause of visual impairment among working age adults. Genome-wide association studies have identified susceptibility loci on chromosomes 15q14 and 15q25 in Caucasian populations of European ancestry. Here, we present a confirmation and meta-analysis study in which we assessed whether these two loci are also associated with myopia in other populations. The study population comprised 31 cohorts from the Consortium of Refractive Error and Myopia (CREAM) representing 4 different continents with 55,177 individuals; 42,845 Caucasians and 12,332 Asians. We performed a meta-analysis of 14 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on 15q14 and 5 SNPs on …
