Variation between Self- and Mutual Assessment in Animal Contests
2014
Limited resources lead animals into conflicts of interest, which are resolved when an individual withdraws from a direct contest. Current theory suggests that the decision to withdraw can be based on a threshold derived from an individual’s own state (self-assessment) or on a comparison between their own state and their opponent’s (mutual assessment). The observed variation between these assessment strategies in nature does not conform to theory. Thus, we require theoretical developments that explain the functional significance of different assessment strategies. We consider a hawk-dove game with two discrete classes that differ in fighting ability, in which the players strategically decide…
Self-organizing maps could improve the classification of Spanish mutual funds
2006
In this paper, we apply nonlinear techniques (Self-Organizing Maps, k-nearest neighbors and the k-means algorithm) to evaluate the official Spanish mutual funds classification. The methodology that we propose allows us to identify which mutual funds are misclassified in the sense that they have historical performances which do not conform to the investment objectives established in their official category. According to this, we conclude that, on average, over 40% of mutual funds could be misclassified. Then, we propose an alternative classification, based on a double-step methodology, and we find that it achieves a significantly lower rate of misclassifications. The portfolios obtained from…
Transcranial magnetic stimulation and neuroplasticity
1998
We review past results and present novel data to illustrate different ways in which TMS can be used to study neural plasticity. Procedural learning during the serial reaction time task (SRTT) is used as a model of neural plasticity to illustrate the applications of TMS. These different applications of TMS represent principles of use that we believe are applicable to studies of cognitive neuroscience in general and exemplify the great potential of TMS in the study of brain and behavior. We review the use of TMS for (1) cortical output mapping using focal, single-pulse TMS; (2) identification of the mechanisms underlying neuroplasticity using paired-pulse TMS techniques; (3) enhancement of th…
Transportation Services as Specific Logistics Projects for Oversized Cargo in Poland
2016
Market observation demonstrates that the transportation-freight forwarding-logistics sector carries out diverse projects based on clients’ orders. The majority of those orders are unique and project related. Recently, the project approach to logistics has gained significance. Logistics project management is a relatively new area of knowledge about logistics and supply chains. The paper presents the essence and characteristics of transportation services as a specific logistics project. The authors characterize the transportation-freight forwarding-logistics sector, with particular focus on the sector of oversized cargo transportation. The demand for such services depends on the industry, ene…
Logistics Service Quality and Technology Investment in Retailing
2009
The quality of physical distribution could be a source of differentiation and, consequently, provide a competitive advantage for the retailer. There is no consensus in the literature, however, on the components of logistics service quality, nor on the role of the retailer's investment in technology. In this context, the present paper aims at evaluating the major components of logistics service quality and technological investment, as well as analysing their impact on the results achieved by the store in terms of satisfaction and customer loyalty in different retailing sectors. As a result, we conclude that there is a need for the retailer to plan investment in technology applied to logistic…
Land Grabbing Models in the International Scenario: the Case Study of the European Union
2015
The worldwide increase in population and consumption has produced a growing demand for food and energy in the rich and developing Countries and has intensiied the search for land on which to carry investments without transparency rules and without creating real conditions of development of local populations. The aim of this paper is to identify, through a cluster analysis, homogeneous group of investor countries and to verify if exist Land grabbing model for the EU Member States. The results show that the strategies adopted by the investors are driven by the need to achieve energy security and reduce CO2 emissions and to cope with the problems of food security in view of the exponential gro…
