The evolution of parental care in insects: the roles of ecology, life history and the social environment

2013

Parental care increases the fitness of offspring at a cost to the parents in terms of residual reproductive success. This trade-off may be affected by ecology, life history and the social environment, which raises the question as to how these factors contribute to the evolution of parental care. Here, previous hypotheses concerning the evolution of parental care in insects are summarized and discussed and the underlying empirical evidence is reviewed. Ecological factors such as harsh environments, ephemeral food sources or predation pressure are broadly accepted as evolutionary drivers of parental care. The most consistent evidence supports a role for natural enemies such as predators, micr…

Brīvo ekonomisko zonu nozīme Latgales reģiona investīciju vidē

2016

Darbam i…

MARKETING PARADIGM: TRANSITION FROM MC TO IMC

2012

A major change is occurring in marketing in general and also marketing communication (MC) due to the digital revolution and increased sophistication of consumers. In the paper the authors state that because of the prevalence of this marketing trend the systematization aspects of marketing communication integration and new marketing communication methods/approaches in the theoretical level declare about their urgency for better interpretation of marketing communication structure in marketing practice. In the authors’ opinion it is important to respond to this paradigm shift with enhanced integration and correct use of MC in order to maximize marketing efficiency. Integrated marketing communi…

MHCII-independent CD4+ T cells protect injured CNS neurons via IL-4

2015

A body of experimental evidence suggests that T cells mediate neuroprotection following CNS injury; however, the antigen specificity of these T cells and how they mediate neuroprotection are unknown. Here, we have provided evidence that T cell-mediated neuroprotection after CNS injury can occur independently of major histocompatibility class II (MHCII) signaling to T cell receptors (TCRs). Using two murine models of CNS injury, we determined that damage-associated molecular mediators that originate from injured CNS tissue induce a population of neuroprotective, IL-4-producing T cells in an antigen-independent fashion. Compared with wild-type mice, IL-4-deficient animals had decreased functi…

Antigen-Driven T-Cell Selection in Patients with Cervical Cancer as Evidenced by T-Cell Receptor Analysis and Recognition of Autologous Tumor

2002

ABSTRACTWe characterized the T-cell receptor (TCR) repertoire in freshly harvested tumor lesions, in short-term-expanded CD4+tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) as well as in CD4+and CD8+peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) from three patients with cervical cancer. Skewing of the T-cell repertoire as defined by measuring the length of the complementarity-determining region 3 (CDR3) of the TCR VA and VB chains was observed in CD8+PBL, in freshly harvested tumor tissue, as well as in CD4+TIL. Comparative analysis of the TCR repertoire revealed unique monoclonal TCR transcripts within the tumor lesion which were not present in PBL, suggesting selection of TCR clonotypes due to antigenic stimula…
