Prospective surveillance of multivariate spatial disease data
2012
Surveillance systems are often focused on more than one disease within a predefined area. On those occasions when outbreaks of disease are likely to be correlated, the use of multivariate surveillance techniques integrating information from multiple diseases allows us to improve the sensitivity and timeliness of outbreak detection. In this article, we present an extension of the surveillance conditional predictive ordinate to monitor multivariate spatial disease data. The proposed surveillance technique, which is defined for each small area and time period as the conditional predictive distribution of those counts of disease higher than expected given the data observed up to the previous t…
Lead-time and overdiagnosis estimation in neuroblastoma screening.
2003
In Germany, neuroblastoma is the most frequent extracranial solid childhood tumour. Its properties made it seem an ideal candidate for screening. A German trial assessed the effect of screening at one year of age from 1995-2001 in a nationwide project. We present here the methods developed for the estimation of lead-time and overdiagnosis in this project. Follow up on 1.5 million screened children and 2.1 million control children is currently available until June 2002. Ascertainment of control cohort cases and false negative cases is complete up to this date. A method for determining an empirical lead-time distribution and overdiagnosis estimate from comparing the age specific incidences in…
An algebraic representation of Steiner triple systems of order 13
2021
Abstract In this paper we construct an incidence structure isomorphic to a Steiner triple system of order 13 by defining a set B of twentysix vectors in the 13-dimensional vector space V = GF ( 5 ) 13 , with the property that there exist precisely thirteen 6-subsets of B whose elements sum up to zero in V , which can also be characterized as the intersections of B with thirteen linear hyperplanes of V .
X-ray diffraction of a protein crystal anchored at the air/water interface
1995
We report the first successful in situ x-ray diffraction experiment with a 2D protein array at the lipid/water interface and demonstrate that the order can be controlled via lateral pressure or density. A protein (streptavidin) was bound to a monolayer of biotinylated lipid at the air/water interface, and diffraction of the protein layer could be measured to many orders. Compression of the monolayer changed the diffraction pattern drastically, indicating that the protein structure can be strongly influenced by external parameters like lateral pressure or density. From the width of the peaks, we find that aggregates consisting of as few as 100 monomers contribute to the diffraction. This ind…
PHASE TRANSITIONS AT INTERFACES
1989
The interface between two phases may exhibit significant structural changes if one of them comes close to a phase transition in its bulk. Surface critical phenomena, critical adsorption, and wetting phenomena, like e.g. surface melting or surface induced disorder, can occur. The grazing incidence of X rays and neutrons is particularly well suited in order to obtain precise informations about these kind of critical phenomena which link the space dimensions two and three.
THE GROUP OF AUTOMORPHISMS OF THE SEMIGROUP OF ENDOMORPHISMS OF FREE COMMUTATIVE AND FREE ASSOCIATIVE ALGEBRAS
2007
Let W(X) be a free commutative or a free associative algebra. The group of automorphisms of the semigroup End (W(X)) is studied.
P609 New and old criteria for diagnosing celiac disease
2019
Background CD is an immune-mediated systemic disease elicited by gluten and related prolamines, it affects genetically susceptible individuals and it is characterized by the presence of gluten-dependent clinical manifestations, CD-specific antibodies, HLA-DQ2 or HLA-DQ8 haplotypes and enteropathy. According to the guidelines published by ESPGHAN in 2012, it is possible to diagnose celiac disease without intestinal biopsy, in symptomatic children and adolescents with very high levels of transglutaminases type-2 antibodies and positive HLA DQ2/DQ8. Aims The aim of our study is to analyse two groups of patients: one in which diagnosis was based on the new ESPGHAN criteria, and another based on…
How to manage patients with polyvascular atherosclerotic disease. Position paper of the International Union of Angiology
2020
Atherosclerosis is a systemic disease affecting multiple arterial territories. Patients with clinical atherosclerotic disease in one vascular bed are likely to have asymptomatic or symptomatic atherosclerotic lesions in other vascular beds. Specifically, peripheral arterial disease (PAD) often coexists with coronary and carotid disease. With progression of atherosclerotic disease in one vascular bed, the risk of clinical manifestations in other territories increases and the incidence of adverse cardiovascular events increases substantially with the number of affected vascular beds. Classical risk factors are associated with the development of polyvascular atherosclerotic disease (PVD) in di…
Global, regional, and national burden of chronic kidney disease, 1990–2017: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017
2020
Abstract: Background Health system planning requires careful assessment of chronic kidney disease (CKD) epidemiology, but data for morbidity and mortality of this disease are scarce or non-existent in many countries. We estimated the global, regional, and national burden of CKD, as well as the burden of cardiovascular disease and gout attributable to impaired kidney function, for the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017. We use the term CKD to refer to the morbidity and mortality that can be directly attributed to all stages of CKD, and we use the term impaired kidney function to refer to the additional risk of CKD from cardiovascular disease and gout. Methods Th…
